Summer vacation is almost over.
Stores are putting up "Back to
School' signs and kids are racing
to complete their summer home-
work. The mood in most homes is
somber and there is a
cloud of doom hang-ing about in the air.
But hold on a minute!
There are still a cou-
ple of weeks of sum-
mer left. Stop rushing
for it to be over and
celebrate the end of the season with your kids!
Slammin' Slumber Party
Plan a themed slumber party, like
'Under the Stars Sleepover', for
your children and a bunch of their
friends. There is no better way to
end the summer than with a party
that lasts all night long!
Make invitations out of black pa-
per cut into a large star shapes.
Brush the stars with a thin layer of
glue and sprinkle each star with
glitter. Write the details of the par-
ty on the back in silver ink. Ask
each child to bring a sleeping bag
and a favorite stuffed animal.
Set up several tents (which can be
bought cheap from local tag sales
or discounts stores). String up sev-
eral lanterns in
the backyard and you are set for a
night under the
stars!
Serve the kids
hotdogs and ham-
burgers as the
main course. And
for dessert make some S'mores in the microwave!
Wrap up the evening by having all
the kids lay side by side in the
grass while taking turns sharing
their best summer memory. Then,
send everyone off to their tent so
that you can enjoy the rest of the
evening under the sparkling sum-mer sky!
As you bid farewell to the last
days of summer, just remember it
will be back again next year with
all its sunny days and starry
nights. It will be back before you
know it!

Did you know . . . there is no such thing as a naturally
blue food?
Did you know . . . elephants
are the only mammal that
can't jump?
Did you know . . . Mars ap-
pears red because it's cov-ered in rust?

Does it feel as if summer flew by in the
blink of an eye? Are you like the many
people who LOVE summertime, but
usually procrastinate enjoying it?
"I meant to go to the beach ... "
"I wanted to gather the whole gang to-
gether for a cook-out ..."
"I was going to plant a garden ..."
"............. but now it's too late!"
Summer is quickly ending, and even
though we officially celebrate the start
of the New Year on January 1, we ALL
know that the New Year really begins in
September. That's when—as a child—
you started a new school year with an
empty desk, a clean locker, a new book
bag and, most important of all, a brand
new box of pencils.
Here are some quick ideas for squeezing
in a little last minute summer fun before
autumn hits, school starts and everyone
shifts gears to renew work goals for the
New Year.
17 Ways You Can Squeeze In Some
Last Minute Summer Fun
1. Get the date and location of a Festi-
val, Carnival, Rodeo or Renaissance
Faire that you've wanted to attend. Take
the day off to go and enjoy yourself.
2. Rediscover a book you loved as a
child and make it part of your summer
reading.
3. Take a nap in a hammock.
4. Has it been ages since you've golfed,
fished or sailed? Call a friend and plan
to an outing.
5. Go to the beach.
6. Schedule a cookout or picnic, and
invite the gang.
7. Sing Campfire songs, toast marshmal-
lows and make S'mores.
8. Watch a sunrise, sunset, or enjoy an
evening stargazing.
9. Make a favorite summer beverage
from your childhood: Lemonade,
Kool-Aid, or Root Beer Floats!
10. Let yourself get lost in a book, mag-
azine or comic book that you usually
don’t have time to read.
11. Buy a volleyball or croquet set for
your backyard and invite some friends
over to play.
12. Eat some watermelon and spit the
seeds as far as you can.
13. Watch clouds go by or watch ants
scurry carrying crumbs back and forth.
14. Gather a few friends and spend an
afternoon playing your favorite child-
hood games. You could play marbles,
hopscotch, Double Dutch, Kick the Can,
stick ball, even fly kites or remote air-
planes.
15. Go for a walk in your neighborhood
and enjoy the August weather.
16. Camp out in the backyard and sleep
under the stars.
17. Go to a favorite summer spot from
your past, or go with an older family
member or friend to one of their favorite
summer spots.
If you're still stumped, ask your friends
and family what they enjoy during the
summertime, then plan to do that togeth-
er. That way, you can head into autumn
with happy summertime memories.
