Stephen McIntyre writes: I first came to know the Brahms Ballades, when they were played by my Italian teacher Benedetti Michelangeli, and this performance remains vividly before me even today. The Beethoven 'Diabelli Variations' is one of the mountain peaks of the piano repertoire, and one of the great challenges for all pianists – an exhilarating ride between complexity and parody, coming to a finale of otherworldly transcendence.
