hen I am asked for a status report on the McIntire School, I frequently paraphrase

Charles Dickens, responding, “It is the most exciting of times, and it is the most chal-

lenging of times.”

It is exciting because we are making tremendous progress on many dimensions. Our

flagship undergraduate program is ranked among the top five undergraduate business pro-

grams. Our graduate Management of Information Technology Program added a second sec-

tion this year, with sections in both Charlottesville and Northern Virginia. We completed our

transition to the executive-format M.S. in Accounting Program, and the Ernst & Young custom M.S.

in Accounting Program was renewed through 2004.

We are also investing in the intellectual capital of the faculty through enhanced research and

case development opportunities and the recruitment of additional world-class scholars. Our students

are outstanding, and despite a tough job environment, our 2002 graduates averaged nine interviews

and three job offers each. Ninety percent found employment by last summer. Our alumni and corpo-

rate support achieved record levels, and combined with our revenue-generating programs, we

doubled the School budget over the past five years.

Major excitement is growing around our plans for the new academic complex involving a com-

plete renovation of Rouss Hall and a new building behind it. We are designing the 125,000-square-

foot complex, and our “Back to the Lawn” capital campaign will begin in 2003. This initiative involved

trading Monroe Hall to the College of Arts & Sciences for the Rouss site and working with the College

to develop new collaborative courses and programs to benefit both Commerce and College students.

At the same time, the School faces great challenges. The Commonwealth of Virginia is experi-

encing a major budget crisis with a significant impact on the University. The 2002–2003 McIntire

School budget was reduced almost 9 percent, or approximately $1.5 million. Problems with the econ-

omy will place significant pressure on our activities, ranging from fund-raising to student placement.

We are working to protect our core activities and to minimize the impact on students, faculty, and

staff, but faculty and staff have not received a raise in two years, and our students cannot be insu-

lated from the adverse impact of these reductions indefinitely.

How do we sustain our momentum, ambition, and excitement in these challenging times? The

answers involve the entire McIntire community.

First, everyone must focus on the excellence of our programs. Faculty members are reviewing

the curriculum in each program, particularly prerequisites and the functional concentrations. They

are creating and integrating new knowledge into these programs to prepare our students for the

challenges of the workplace. We hope that our alumni and friends will continue a tradition of in-

volvement in our programs as guest speakers, panelists, and workshop and symposium participants.

Second, our students, recruiters, and Career Services staff must collaborate to ensure that our

graduates secure the best jobs. We hope that our alumni and corporate partners hire our terrific stu-

dents as permanent employees and interns. The current economic environment provides an opportu-

nity to hire more graduates, who represent a great value and a sound investment for the future.

Third, the McIntire School can maintain excellence and innovation only through the financial

support of our alumni and corporate friends. I hope that everyone will contribute to our Annual

Fund because these gifts, small and large, directly support our students and faculty. They are essen-

tial to continue our positive momentum and enhance the value of a McIntire degree.

Thank you very much for your support and interest in the School, and I look forward to seeing

you in Charlottesville or during my travels.

Sincerely,

Carl P. Zeithaml

(Left to right) McIntire AccountingProfessor Bill Shenkir, Nancy Altobello, and Jonathan Mariner (McIntire ’76).

Shenkir: I’m very pleased to be

joined by Nancy Altobello and

Jonathan Mariner (McIntire ’76).

Both have extensive experience in

accounting and understanding the

issues that drive the industry.

Nancy serves as Managing Partner,

Area Practices Assurance &

Advisory Business Services for

Ernst & Young, and Jonathan is

Senior Vice President and CFO for

Major League Baseball.

Let’s start by looking at the

current corporate environment.

President Bush has said that there

are just a few bad apples, but

some commentators say failures

like Enron, WorldCom, and Global

Crossing signal something like a

flu epidemic. What’s your take?

S A T I O NAltobello: If you’re looking at wide-

spread business failures, I think it’s

more a sign of the economy and un-

derlying financial factors than any-

thing else. If you’re looking at corpo-

rate scandals, it seems to me that it’s

much more contained—a few compa-

nies pushing the edge of the envelope

or somewhat out of the envelope. I

hope we don’t overreact to some of

the corporate scandals because I

think there are so many good boards

and good groups of management

who do the right thing.

Mariner: I agree with Nancy. When I

look at Enron, WorldCom, Global

Crossing, Adelphia, the common

thread is that they all shook investor

confidence, but I see very different

stories with each of those companies.

At one end of the spectrum is

Adelphia with its fiduciary issues.

Then there’s Global Crossing, which

one may argue is a business model

issue, an industry glut issue. My take

on WorldCom is that they pushed the

envelope and probably bumped out-

side of it. And that’s different again

from Enron, which was way outside

the envelope regarding self-dealing. I

can’t connect the dots and say there

is an epidemic. Instead, it seems as

though some companies were stand-

ing on very thin legs. In the face of a

weakening economy, those legs be-

gan to wobble.

Shenkir: During the 1990s, the

incredible Internet bubble was

driven by some business models

that clearly were not sustainable.

Was the creation of that bubble

due in part to accounting practices?

Altobello: Many dot-coms were

companies that had no revenue and

no profits, no matter how you ac-

counted for it. The dot-coms terribly

inflated the market, and valuations

got totally out of control. The term ir-

rational exuberance was right on the

mark. The valuations were so out of

line that every dollar decision made

from an accounting standpoint had a

much bigger impact than it probably

should have. We all knew the market

was out of control. We knew that

these companies were not worth

what they were trading for, but it was

almost that you had to be in because

it was there.

Shenkir: Do you have any obser-

vations on regaining the trust of

shareholders who have put a lot

of money in 401(k)s?

Mariner: It’s going to take some time.

With the dampening down of expec-

tations in the marketplace, I look for-

ward to a time when investors start

to accept that maybe a 5 or 10 or 15

percent return is reasonable. That

will, I hope, drive the corporate side

to manage those expectations as well

so that businesses don’t feel com-

pelled to try to create or sustain unre-

alistic results.

Shenkir: The Bush administration

just signed a reform bill. There’s

a new body to oversee account-

ing firms, and CFOs are going to

have to sign off on the accuracy

of financial statements. What do

you think about that?

Mariner: I find it difficult to legislate

morality, but it’s necessary medicine.

Something has to change somewhat

dramatically to stem the amount of

discomfort and lack of confidence in-

vestors face today. It will force CFOs,

CEOs, and audit committees to step

up and look more carefully at what’s

being done. At a minimum I think it

will start to narrow the band of

choices that companies make regard-

ing their decisions on how to account

for their earnings. The quality of

earnings may become much more

meaningful because of this.

Altobello: The accounting rules have

become very complex because busi-

ness has become very complex. With

the nature of the transaction and of

the financial instruments, it’s very dif-

ficult for the rule making to keep up.

It’s a matter of having some kind of

general framework and sense of

what’s right—an understanding that

the downside is much greater than

the upside. ▼

C O N V E R

Shenkir: What’s your advice to

those who are CFOs or in the au-

diting profession?

Mariner: One of the things I learned

early in my career—it wasn’t a hor-

rific lesson, but it was a very tough

lesson—had to do with taking your

role as CFO very seriously and recog-

nizing the fiduciary responsibility you

have. Early in my career as a CFO,

the CEO asked me to do some things,

accounting-wise, that I was very un-

comfortable with and, quite frankly,

felt were over the line—it was a

smaller operation. I went to the

chairman of the finance committee of

the board of directors and made sure

he knew where I was in all of this and

we ended up not doing it. I had him

intercede on my behalf, but there was

an awful lot of pressure there.

When I mentioned WorldCom

earlier I can only envision that the

CFO crossed the line in the face of

pressures surrounding his own CEO.

But I sit there as a CFO thinking,

“That’s a lot of pressure to place on

him.” You have to have your own set

of personal values, and, I would

hope, in an organization where cor-

porate governance supports making

the right decisions, you can come out

where you need to be as opposed to

succumbing to the pressure. There’s

tremendous pressure all the time,

given the expectations of Wall Street,

investors, and other stakeholders in

the operation. I don’t know if there’s

an accounting solution as much as an

internally driven or a moral- or value-

driven solution that will get us back

to where we need to be.

Altobello: On the auditors’ side, we

need to be 100 percent accurate on

technical matters. We need to execute

our audit methodology flawlessly. As

a firm we need to continue to chal-

lenge whether our methodology,

training, tactics, performance mea-

surements, and staffing are appropri-

ate to ensure we’re executing flaw-

lessly. That has to be fundamental.

Second, we must continue to rein-

force the message that no client is too

big to say no to. That’s a message our

chairman has said consistently to us.

Shenkir: That leads us to thinking

about what we need to do today

in business schools. When you

have these kinds of upheavals, it

causes business educators to

think about how to continuously

improve what we’re doing. What

should we do in educating future

business leaders?

Mariner: I believe one of the best

lessons for current business school

students is the reality of the business

cycle. There was a generation of stu-

dents who never saw a down busi-

ness cycle. They never understood

the need to ask what if? What if this

trend doesn’t continue? What do I do

about it? What if these assumptions

don’t go on forever? For current

business students, just to understand

that alone—as opposed to a student

in 1997, 1998, or 1999 who thought

that there’s no such thing as business

gravity—goes a long way toward giv-

ing them perspective, toward reduc-

ing that aura of financial invincibility

that a lot of the dot-commers seemed

to have. Their companies had no rev-

enue and no income but somehow

were worth billions of dollars. I think

that aura helped undermine a lot of

the accounting issues. So, this down

M O R E on Restoring Investor Confidence

Page 7: McIntire.now Fall 2002 (Investors' Report)

McINTIRE .. now • 5

cycle goes a long way toward provid-

ing students with greater business

perspective. We’re now forced to

take a long-term approach. We’re

forced to rely on strategic planning,

and those factors should be the un-

derpinning of business education.

Altobello: I knew we were in trouble

when I read that 50 percent of stu-

dents coming out of college expected

to retire when they were 35. Now

students will need to understand that

the issues surrounding governance,

risk management, and business cy-

cles are more than classroom theory.

That understanding will ultimately

serve them very well.

Shenkir: We often say around

McIntire—and I’ve been on the

faculty for more than 30 years—

that we do a lot of teaching in

conversations outside of the

classroom. We do a lot teaching

in our offices, in the hallways,

and after class. Jonathan, you can

remember many such conversa-

tions when you were there. Now

that students are living through

the down side of a business cy-

cle, perhaps those conversations

will take on a different tone.

Altobello: The criminality of some of

what’s gone on will provide students

and faculty with a lot to talk about.

All of a sudden we see people in

handcuffs. You can talk about the

risks of bowing to the pressure, but

when you see someone carted off to

jail, it brings it all home very differ-

ently.

Mariner: I think it would be very in-

teresting to take a look at case studies

on companies that are no longer

around, the bubble companies of the

late 1990s, when start-ups suddenly

were worth more than IBM and

General Motors. It would be helpful

to really study to do the autopsy on

those now-defunct companies and

put students into the shoes and the

heads of their CEOs and investment

bankers to examine their now-faulty

business assumptions. It would cer-

tainly teach them to take note of the

warning signs.

Shenkir: We can’t have a discus-

sion like this without thinking

about the U.Va. honor system.

I’ve heard from alumni over the

years that working under the

honor system in that four-year

period has had a lasting impact

on the way they conduct them-

selves. Jonathan, do you have

any reflections on your upbring-

ing under that system?

Mariner: At U.Va., honor is a front

burner issue. When Nancy talked

about the chairman of her firm telling

all of the new associates that “we can

say no,” it’s the same kind of issue—

that is, putting values first.

Shenkir: I think that’s what you

have at your firm, Nancy.

Altobello: It’s best when cornerstone

values begin early in life at home. I’m

glad that McIntire and the University

of Virginia reinforce and build on

those values and the virtues of honor

and character. Clearly, we’ve been re-

minded recently just how important

those values really are. M

McIntire and Darden Ease

Career Transitions for Alums

If you are a McIntire or Darden

alum with at least six years of work

experience and considering a career

transition, a “Career Transitions”

workshop can help with making a

successful change. McIntire and

Darden are teaming together to pro-

vide alumni with the tools needed to

successfully move into new careers.

Through an intensive 2.5-day work-

shop offered each semester, alumni

from these schools identify and re-

fine their life themes and translate

them into career objectives, generate

marketing materials to find the right

job, analyze the current job market,

generate job leads, and strategically

access the market.

The next “Career Transitions”

workshop is scheduled for Nov.

14–16, 2002; another is planned for

March 2003. For full program details

Comm Connection Students Get a Taste of ICE

Analyzing cases and achieving success through team-

work are central to real-world business. They’re also key

elements in Commerce Connection, McIntire’s weeklong

summer offering that provides rising second-year students

with a realistic expectation of the McIntire School.

As of 2002, Commerce Connection participants are

also getting a taste of the Integrated Core Experience

(ICE). For example, team-

teaching, a key feature of the

ICE curriculum, has been

added to the program. In one

case, finance and marketing

faculty members used an inte-

grated case to familiarize

Commerce Connection stu-

dents with selected finance

and marketing strategies and

examined a business decision

by way of a case study.

Commerce Connection sponsor Wachovia played an

integral role in Commerce Connection, just as do sponsor

firms in the ICE program. Commerce Connection partici-

pants analyzed Wachovia’s annual reports, developed a

business plan, and made presentations to Wachovia repre-

sentatives, much like third-year students in ICE.

“Commerce Connection wasn’t just another show-

and-tell,” says Associate Dean for the B.S. in Commerce

Mike Atchison. “Students got a better understanding of

what really happens in a McIntire classroom. They com-

pleted a project and made a presentation at the end of the

week. The faculty expected some output, and the students

appreciated that. They learned about business plans and

how small firms operate in addition to learning about the

School.”

Initially designed to encourage minority students to

consider entering McIntire’s undergraduate program,

Commerce Connection is open to all interested students.

Realizing a dream of running her

own business—a financial services

firm that focuses on the goals of

each individual client and offers a full

range of services—was not easy for

Jennifer Bryan (McIntire ’89). But J.B., as

she is called, has never taken the easy road.

She held down three jobs while she

worked her way through the University of

Virginia, where she chose a double concen-

tration at McIntire in accounting and fi-

nance. “I loved marketing, but it came easy

for me. I wanted the challenge of account-

ing and finance,” Bryan says.

She worked full time while she earned

a master’s degree in communications at

Virginia Commonwealth University. After

some experience selling ads for a radio sta-

tion and working at Wheat First Securities

as a financial consultant, Bryan launched

J.B. Bryan Financial Group Inc. in 1995.

“Everything was hard for me,” she says.

“Nobody just gave me $100,000. All these

loans for minority businesses and

women—to me they don’t exist.”

Bryan used her savings, a credit card,

and money she earned from loyal clients

who were waiting when she opened her

doors. She created an environment where

people feel comfortable discussing their fi-

nances. Bryan listens to each client and

helps him or her plan for retirement or col-

lege for their children—whatever the per-

son’s goal. Of the six people who now

work for her, two are the children of clients

who finished college and joined the firm.

On Bryan’s first day in college, she de-

cided that she wanted to go to McIntire. “I

knew I needed to keep my grades up to get

in, and that gave me something to shoot

for,” she says. “I’m very goal-oriented, and

I think it was the best decision I ever made.

I wouldn’t be where I am today if I hadn’t

gone to the Comm School.”

Bryan says her McIntire professors—

all of them—were supportive. “[Former]

Dean Shenkir always took a personal inter-

est in me, and he seemed to do that with

everyone. He always asked me about my

goals and encouraged me. He made me

feel that there was something special about

me—that I could be really successful.

“The Comm School gave me the confi-

dence to feel that I can do anything I put

my mind to. It taught me the importance of

follow-through, of being a team player, of

having a great attitude and an ethical

standing. I always said I’d leave U.Va. if I

didn’t get into the Comm School, and

thank God I got in.” M

The challenge was daunting: devel-

oping a successful enterprise in a

small village in Ghana with women

who couldn’t read, write, or do arithmetic.

Miriam Leonard (McIntire ’99) had a de-

gree in international business, but she did

not speak the language of her business

partners in her first Peace Corps project.

Leonard learned the Fanti language as

she taught her partners the basics. Then,

they all got down to business. A cost analy-

sis of the first product they tried, palm ker-

nel oil, showed they were losing money.

They dropped it and decided to conduct

market research on their next choice, gari,

a breakfast food made from cassava root.

“Market research meant hopping on

the back of a pickup truck and riding a few

days to the next village to see their factory,”

says Leonard. “Gari was launched, and af-

ter the first few months, the women were

able to buy additional machines and in-

crease their production.”

“I had more business education, but the

women I worked with knew the market bet-

ter than I would ever know it,” says Leonard.

“They hooked up with an exporter who be-

gan selling their gari to other West African

countries. It was so exciting for these

women to be exporting to other countries.”

During her second year, she was as-

signed a different project, an established

business of disabled artisans who made

sandals.

“The business had been successfully

running for about 10 years, and they

wanted to expand,” Leonard says. “We did

grant and proposal writing with the help of

the owner, who was literate. The U.S. em-

bassy gave us a grant to build a new fac-

tory. They turned their old factory into a

hostel and tripled the number of disabled

boys they could house and train.”

Leonard was impressed by how the

people with whom she worked gave back

to their community. “When the gari busi-

ness was successful and the women began

to take home some of the money, they used

it to start a school lunch program in the vil-

lage,” she says. “The owner of the sandal

The McIntire School took a significant step “Back to

the Lawn” with the selection of Hartman-Cox

Architects of Washington, D.C. The firm will design the

Commerce academic complex, including the complete

renovation of Rouss Hall and the new 100,000-square-

foot building attached to the rear of Rouss.

“Hartman-Cox was selected from a field of eight

world-class architectural firms, all of which had signifi-

cant experience in designing major academic buildings

and in renovating, preserving, and expanding historic

structures,” explains McIntire Dean Carl Zeithaml.

Hartman-Cox is no stranger to the Commerce

School. Fifteen years ago, the firm used a “radical-con-

servative” approach to design the Balfour Addition to

Monroe Hall. For this project, Hartman-Cox adopted

the style of the surrounding buildings in a way that re-

inforced the open, green space of the quadrangle and

successfully held its own against the imposing

Alderman Library.

The challenge now facing Hartman-Cox is even

more daunting. All modifications to Rouss Hall, particu-

larly involving the exterior of the structure, must meet

rigorous historical and architectural standards. The

new building attached to Rouss must fit gracefully with

Jefferson’s Academical Village and the Stanford

White–designed complex at the south end of the Lawn

that includes Rouss, Cabell, and Cocke halls.

Hartman-Cox brings strong credentials to the pro-

ject, including the restoration of the Lincoln and

Jefferson memorials and the restoration and remodel-

ing of the National Archives, the Museum of American

Art, and the National Portrait Gallery. The firm de-

signed academic buildings at Duke University and

Washington University. At Virginia, Hartman-Cox re-

cently designed the new Special Collections Library and

previously worked on Lawn restoration.

“We are convinced that Hartman-Cox can success-

fully address the challenges of building at this site,”

says Associate Dean for Administration Gerry Starsia,

chair of the building committee that will manage the

project from planning through construction.

The new academic complex is essential to achieving

McIntire’s preeminence goal, and it will serve as the

center for new collaborative courses and programs in-

volving Commerce and the College of Arts & Sciences.

McIntire will work with the College to expand its

course offerings to College students, to create new

courses for all Virginia students, and to facilitate multi-

disciplinary research. The initial funding for this un-

precedented cooperation is a $500,000 gift from the

John A. Griffin Foundation, established by John Griffin

(McIntire ’85).

“John’s creativity and enthusiasm for interdiscipli-

nary work and his gifts to McIntire and the College

were essential for our collaboration. Furthermore, it

was the extraordinary vision and cooperative spirit of

College Dean Ed Ayers that really made ‘Back to the

Lawn’ a reality,” Zeithaml says. M

Could improved communication networks between

the FBI and CIA have prevented the Sept. 11 attacks?

Will improved communication prevent future terrorism?

Assistant Professor Rob Cross says the answer to

both questions may well be yes.

“I presented to the CIA with a group of executives

several months ago,” says Cross. “They were concerned

with agency-wide collaboration to improve what they

call an ability to ‘surge,’ to rapidly bring to bear em-

ployees from various divisions to make sense of emerg-

ing or potential crises. Companies need the same

thing.”

Cross, who teaches at McIntire and conducts execu-

tive education, uses a tool called social network analysis

(SNA), which maps information and knowledge flows in

strategically important groups of people. This technique

helps managers improve knowledge sharing within

their companies. He collaborates with Larry Prusak,

Founder and Director of IBM’s Institute for Knowledge-

Based Organizations, who recently presented at a

McIntire symposium on knowledge management spon-

sored by the Center for the Management of Information

Technology.

Both men believe knowledge management research

can be applied to organizations both to better protect

the American people and to improve the effectiveness

of companies. “Three or four years ago,” Cross says,

“we began introducing the network ideas to the mem-

ber companies sponsoring research in the Institute for

Knowledge-Based Organizations. Initially, we were in-

terested because no one seemed to be effectively using

the very expensive knowledge management systems

that had been installed. Since then, we have worked

with over 60 organizations to promote collaboration

and effectiveness in strategically important groups such

as top leadership networks, merger and acquisition in-

terfaces, new product development initiatives, and al-

liances or networks sitting across core processes such as

commercial lending or software development.”

McIntire Professor Rob Cross applies a revealing analytical toolin the classroom and in his research at home and abroad.

Page 17: McIntire.now Fall 2002 (Investors' Report)

The Real Communications Structure

Cross explains how he uses the SNA tool in his work

and how the CIA and other government organizations

might use it.

“When I first go to an organization, I meet with

the managers to determine which groups should be

communicating with others to successfully execute the

company’s strategy,” says Cross. “I ask questions of each

person in the groups identified by management. These

questions show to whom they go for information and

how easily accessible that person is. I ask other ques-

tions as well that indicate the connections between

people.

“Then I map the relationships, and the structure of

how knowledge flows—or doesn’t flow—in these social

networks becomes visible. Informal networks are often

very different from the organizational charts of the

company. The network helps identify the handful of

role players critical to knowledge sharing. They also

identify critical disconnects in the network. We never

suggest that everyone should communicate with every-

one else, just that targeted points in networks can yield

a disproportionate impact on effectiveness.”

The Invisible Enemy?

“Most corporations treat informal networks as an

invisible enemy,” Cross says. “To many senior executives,

these intricate webs of communication are unobserv-

able and ungovernable, and therefore, they are not

amenable to the tools of scientific management.”

Cross and Prusak recently co-authored a paper,

“The People Who Make Organizations Go—or Stop,”

published in Harvard Business Review (June 2002). It ex-

plains to managers not only how the SNA methodology

reveals the invisible social networks in a company but

also where interventions may fix problems and improve

the flow of knowledge.

“Our research suggests that if senior managers fo-

cus their attention on key role players in the group, the

effectiveness of any informal network can be en-

hanced,” Prusak says. Cross and

Prusak advise managers to support in-

formal networks by:

■ Using network analysis to target

interventions based on people’s position in the network.

For example, revising staffing or orientation practices can

help draw peripheral people into the work of the group.

Reallocating tasks or decision rights can keep overly cen-

tral people from becoming bottlenecks.

■ Focusing on the social fabric of a group to promote in-

formation flow.

■ Paying attention to organizational context. The imme-

diate leap to “fix” disconnected networks is to throw a col-

laborative technology and a happy hour at the group. The

more enduring issues—organizational structure, human

resource practices, leadership behaviors, and culture—

must also be considered.

Executives armed with an SNA can start asking the

right questions of the right people to pinpoint problems

and find solutions. Is one unit having trouble getting infor-

mation from another? Perhaps a key person in the infor-

mal network is overburdened or even hoarding informa-

tion. Is one unit too isolated from another? Cross and

Prusak believe that the real work in organizations is done

informally, through personal contacts, and that supporting

those networks is key to a company’s success. “It is also

critical to individual success,” says Cross. “People who are

better connected—and this doesn’t just mean more con-

nections—tend to be promoted faster, more satisfied in

their work, and less likely to leave. In fact, there is even

one very rigorous study showing that people who are bet-

ter connected are better able to resist the common cold.”

Research for the Real World

“I am trying to conduct research that truly has mean-

ing for both scholars and managers,” Cross says. For ex-

ample, one study aimed at profiling high performers in a

company. Cross found that the factors he expected to pre-

dict high performance—a person’s ability to get informa-

tion from databases, the size of a person’s networks inside

the company, the range of networks outside the com-

pany—were far less important than whether a person was

what Cross calls an “energizer” in the network. In this

study he literally mapped who energized whom in the net-

work. “This can be a great way to take the pulse of an or-

ganization. We all know that those initiatives that have en-

ergy or leaders who inspire it are where things are hap-

pening.”

Interestingly, a person’s position as an energizer in the

network was four times greater a predictor of perfor-

mance than any other factor measured. That alone was

sufficient to prompt Cross to study the phenomenon fur-

ther, and he replicated his findings in a number of other

organizational settings.

Cross followed up the network studies with in-depth

interviews and talked with peo-

ple about who energized or

deenergized them and why.

“The concepts are very intuitive

for people. When you ask, peo-

ple immediately have in mind

individuals they think are ener-

gizers or deenergizers.”

Cross found that energizers

are able to motivate others to

follow their ideas and that they

attract other high performers.

“There are strong reasons why

there is a link between energiz-

ers and high performance.

“Energizers are high per-

formers and to some extent

they raise the boat for every-

body,” says Cross. “People who

are connected to energizers are

better performers, too.

“Deenergizers, on the other hand, are deadly. People

avoid them. You may miss out on knowledge they have,

but unless it is absolutely necessary, it’s not worth the ag-

gravation.” Cross adds that deenergizers drain people and

groups. People have to regroup after meeting with them

and talk to others so they’ll feel better. What characterizes

the interactions between energizers and others? Some be-

haviors of the energizer, says Cross, are the following:

■ Being able to create a compelling vision

■ Creating opportunities for others to make a meaning-

ful contribution

■ Being engaged in the interaction

■ Giving others a sense of moving forward, of progress

■ The ability to create a sense of trust

Networks in the Classroom

Cross is as dedicated to his teaching as

he is to his research and its usefulness in

the real world. Third-year McIntire stu-

dents in the Integrated Core Experience

(ICE) program are learning about SNA by

participating directly.

“I did an SNA of my class largely to

share with students a different way of

thinking and to make SNA very real for

them in the classroom,” says Cross. “I surveyed each stu-

dent about others in the class: Whom do you learn from;

whom do you spend time with outside class; who ener-

gizes you? Then I mapped the network of relationships

and made a series of cuts to get a sense of whom people

most learn from in that setting.”

“What we found was that people learned from those

they most liked,” says Cross. “Of course, the ‘coolest’ peo-

ple in class are not always the ones with the best answers

in a classroom setting.

“I talked to the students about this and ways of push-

ing themselves to think more broadly. It’s important to fo-

cus on what people are saying, even those you may not

particularly like. This is a big lesson for executives and ad-

ministrators as well. I frequently spend a lot of time coach-

ing executives on their personal network profiles and how

biases might affect learning and decision making. In the

class, we also discussed ways to engage the peripheral

people in the network, to create connections across the

different ICE blocks, to form mentoring relationships, and

to communicate with professors after class.”

“Student evaluations were enthusiastic about the SNA

segment. We will probably apply that to all ICE blocks and

see how it might be beneficial,” he adds. M

Research at McIntire

A number of McIntire faculty members are conducting important research in the area of knowledge manage-

ment:

■ Assistant Professor Adelaide Wilcox King and Dean Carl Zeithaml demonstrated an effective method of measuring es-

sential management knowledge in two unrelated (hospital and textile) industries. In a separate study, Wilcox King

studied the methods by which a professional medical board certifies to the public that thoracic surgeons have the

necessary knowledge and experience to perform surgery. Wilcox King found that managers—and their organiza-

tions—could benefit from the methods used in training and evaluating resident surgeons.

■ Assistant Professor Stefano Grazioli, who recently joined the McIntire faculty, previously taught knowledge manage-

ment in the context of graduate studies in information technology. One area of his research involves investigating how

knowledge workers detect and repair information they retrieve from organizational databases. Grazioli has also con-

ducted research on knowledge-intensive environments where non-trained individuals must apply complex rules and

regulations. Specifically, he studied the advantages and disadvantages of an Internet-based helpdesk for taxpayers.

■ Assistant Professor Mike Morris’ current research focuses on technology acceptance—why people adopt or reject new

technologies. A recent paper explores the differences in attitudes between men and women who are in the process of

learning new software. He and Cross are initiating a collaborative research effort that will explore what sources peo-

ple use for information and why.

Want to Be Creative? Fail Faster

Addressing a standing-room-only audience in the

Rotunda, keynote speaker Robert I. Sutton discussed the

findings of his book Weird Ideas that Work: 11 1/2

Practices for Promoting, Managing, and Sustaining

Innovation.

The Stanford professor challenged listeners to re-

frame their views on success and creativity. “Personally,

I think failure stinks,” he said. “But the fact is, every bit

of evidence demonstrates that it is impossible to gener-

ate a few good ideas without generating a lot of bad

ideas.

“The thing about creativity is that you can’t tell at

the outset which ideas will succeed and which will fail.

So, the only thing you can do is try to fail faster in order

to move on to the next idea. Now, leaders pay a lot of lip

service to the notion of rewarding failure, but few orga-

nizations hold failed effort on the same level with suc-

cess. Often, they have a forgive-and-forget policy.

Forgiveness is crucial, but it’s not enough. To learn from

mistakes, it’s even more important to forgive and re-

member. The only kind of failure that deserves to be

punished is inaction.”

Robert Mondavi, who has been called the father of

American wine, gave the keynote address during the af-

“Wine to me is passion,” he told the audience. “It is

family and friends. It’s warmth of heart and generosity

of spirit. Wine is art. It’s culture. It’s the essence of civiliza-

tion and the art of living.”

Noting both the debt American winemakers owe

Thomas Jefferson and the success Virginia winegrowers

have enjoyed in recent years, Mondavi said, “Jefferson

encouraged the development of a wine industry in

t’s 8:27 a.m. on a Saturday morning in August

and a great day for the beach or perhaps just

sleeping. But at the Bechtel Center in Reston,

Va., the room is buzzing with excitement. Students en-

rolled in the M.S. in the Management of Information

Technology (MIT) Program at the McIntire School of

Commerce are talking enthusiastically about their recent

projects or the day’s upcoming speaker. Grabbing a cup of

coffee in the lobby, a few more students slip inside as

Professor Ryan Nelson steps to the front of the room to

begin the day’s discussion.

As the group digs into the day’s subject—process

management—Nelson challenges them to look at their

own organizations as they grapple with questions includ-

ing “How does work get done in an organization?” “What

does it take for an organization to perform at the highest

level?” “How does the optimal use of information technol-

ogy enable organizations to enhance performance?”

Because each student has an average of 11 years of

work experience, the issues discussed are more than theo-

retical. The students explore Nelson’s questions in light of

the challenges that they face every day on their jobs.

Executive Format

Since 1999, students in McIntire’s highly acclaimed ex-

ecutive-style M.S. in MIT Program had to travel to

Charlottesville every other Friday and Saturday and re-

ceived their degree in 12 months. With the creation of the

Northern Virginia section in 2002, students have the op-

tion of meeting in Reston on an every-other-Saturday

schedule that requires 16 months to complete. Both sec-

tions begin with an intensive two-week residency in

Charlottesville designed to provide a solid foundation in

the use of IT.

“The Northern Virginia program is based minutes

from Dulles Airport and just 15 miles from downtown

Washington, D.C.,” says Nelson. “It was designed specifi-

cally to meet the demand in metro D.C. for technology-

savvy business decision makers who don’t want to miss

any time from work. Both sections offer the same high-

quality education led by senior members of the McIntire

faculty.”

Chat Groups, Discussion Groups, Virtual Labs

During the lunch break, students eagerly discuss the

program and how it’s already adding value to their ca-

reers. “I was looking for a master’s program that focused

specifically on project and technology management, some-

thing that was well respected and that had a flexible

schedule,” says Tiina K.O. Brunke (Master’s in MIT ’03), a

software project manager for Cisco Systems. “I compared

several programs, and this one had a more focused cur-

riculum. It was tailored to look at the technology from a

management perspective, and that’s exactly what I needed.

Competitive EdgeLike its counterpart in Charlottesville, McIntire’s M.S. in the Management

of Information Technology Program in Northern Virginia meets the

demand for world-class education that links business strategy

with information technology.

I

I really think this program has given me a competitive

edge.”

Brunke says that the management component pro-

vides the tools needed for success at the highest levels.

“The reason I chose the McIntire program as opposed to a

traditional M.B.A. program is that I think McIntire has

stayed ahead of the curve. Other programs haven’t sorted

out the marriage of personnel issues, technology issues,

and business factors. All three really make the difference

to technology professionals.”

Brunke calls the McIntire culture “fabulous.”

“In terms of the program itself, McIntire has created a

wonderful environment where you are able to work in

teams within your 12- or 16-month section and then work

across teams,” she says. “They’ve set up chat groups, dis-

cussion groups, and virtual labs in which you can contact

people from any group. So, if you have a question about fi-

nancials and you know that someone in another section is

a guru in that regard, you can email that person and work

directly with him or her. You don’t have to go through

anybody. It’s really a one-on-one connection.

“That’s true not only with fellow students but with the

faculty as well. I’ve been amazed at how responsive and

helpful the professors are. Coming back to school is intim-

idating. I found that the faculty really eased the process

and made sure that we have the right balance between our

lives outside of McIntire and our relationships within

McIntire.”

Returning to School after 25 Years

In the working world for more than 25 years, Jan

Chavez-Wilcynski (Master’s in MIT ’03) selected the pro-

gram to enhance her skills as a manager with the U.S.

Department of Energy. “My strength coming in was more

strategy- and program-oriented than information technol-

ogy–oriented. I’m amazed that in just six weeks I’ve learned

so much. I’m still processing some of the information from

the two-week segment in Charlottesville in June. It was an

excellent way to get back into the academic world.

“From a practical standpoint, I’m applying what I’m

learning already. I’ve been able to bring what I’m learning

back to my employees and we’ve established better sys-

tems for analyzing proposals. I just feel good about being

able to take what I’m learning and apply it directly in my

work life.”

“Our research told us that strong demand existed for

this program in the metro D.C. area,” Nelson says as he

gathers his notes for the afternoon lecture. “Our goal is to

meet that demand with the best program possible.” Given

the participant enthusiasm on this Saturday afternoon, the

MIT program has successfully met the challenge. M

Page 30: McIntire.now Fall 2002 (Investors' Report)

During his 10-year leadership of

McIntire’s graduate programs,

Bob Kemp saw enrollment

grow from 80 students in

1992 to 287 students 2002—a

250 percent increase. First as

Director of Graduate Studies

and then as Associate Dean for

Graduate Programs, Kemp built a team

of faculty and staff who redesigned the existing graduate pro-

grams and created a new custom program with Ernst &

Young.

As Kemp assumes a different role in Graduate

Programs—full-time management of the Ernst & Young M.S.

in Accounting Program—he also looks forward to more time

for research and teaching. We asked him to describe the

achievements of McIntire’s Graduate Programs during his ad-

ministration.

These past 10 years were the most satisfying in my 22

years at the University. I am so appreciative of the

support from faculty, students, and staff in building

Graduate Programs. I want to see the graduate programs

continue to grow, and we all worked hard to make sure

the pieces are in place so I can go home to the faculty and

smile. Both the M.S. in Accounting—Tax Consulting and

the M.S. in the Management of Information Technology,

which recently expanded to Northern Virginia, are suc-

cessful executive-format programs. I look forward to

heading the wonderful partnership that we established

over the past few years with Ernst & Young through the

custom accounting program.

If you go back in the School’s history, the dream of the

faculty was to build world-class graduate programs.

McIntire’s primary mission will always be our undergrad-

uate program, but a very strong secondary mission is to

extend that charge to graduate programs tied to specific

disciplines. I think every person who has sat in my chair

has really tried to foster and build on that charge.

McIntire’s Graduate Programs Office has two objec-

tives in creating our executive-format and custom pro-

grams. First, all of our graduate programs must add to the

intellectual capital of the School and the University. We

bring in only the very best students with a real passion for

their discipline. Also, the programs should help the School

to recruit and retain the best faculty and then to challenge

them intellectually.

The second objective is that the programs must add to

the financial health of the School. We are the only school

at the University where the graduate programs help to

support the undergraduate mission, and I’m very proud of

that. We’ve done it through a real team effort, starting

with Dean Zeithaml’s leadership. We’ve done it by learn-

ing to dream, to take risks, and to work hard.

We are meeting both objectives and have created a

very strong foundation. We have an excellent faculty, dedi-

cated administrative team, and an outstanding leader in

Peter Todd, who succeeds me as Associate Dean for

Graduate Programs. We are in great shape. The future of

graduate programs at McIntire is brighter than ever. M

The McIntire Corporate Partners program creates strong, mutuallybeneficial relationships between partner corporations/firms andMcIntire faculty and students. This program provides resources and

opportunities that increase a Partner’s competitive advantage; enhancerecruiting effectiveness; and produce benefits such as case studies, researchrelationships, and internships. Corporate Partners receive a uniqueresource—a faculty liaison, who develops a thorough understanding of thePartner’s firm and industry and helps to educate students about availableopportunities. Faculty liaisons work to increase visibility among studentsand strengthen the Partner’s involvement with the School. Even greatervisibility and access to students are available to McIntire CorporateSponsors and Investors. Sponsors enjoy all the benefits of the CorporatePartners program and enhanced involvement with the School by sponsoringan annual School event or activity. This sponsorship expands the Partner’srole in the School and increases the publicity associated with Partnersupport. We thank and recognize the 2001–2002 McIntire CorporateInvestors, Sponsors, and Partners:

The McIntire School is grateful to the followingorganizations for their financial and in-kind supportof programs initiated by McIntire’s centers—the

Center for Growth Enterprises, the Center for theManagement of Information Technology, the PricewaterhouseCoopersCenter for Innovation in Professional Services, and The McIntire Center for Financial Innovation. Because of this targeted support, the School wasable to host intellectually stimulating workshops, symposia, and roundtablediscussions that facilitated invaluable networking among the businesscommunity and our faculty and students.

Georgia Willis (McIntire ’83) credits the Commerce Schoolwith giving her the tools for a successful banking career. To get them, she worked 20 hours a week and pieced togetherscholarship support to pay her way through U.Va. Now asenior vice president for Virginia Heartland Bank, she ismaking sure other women receive the benefits of a McIntireeducation, minus some of the financial pressures she faced.

Ms. Willis has created a charitable trust that will financeat least one scholarship annually for a third-year femalestudent at the McIntire School of Commerce. Her gift reflectsan adage she learned from her father, a Pennsylvania teacherand dairy farmer: “You make a living by what you get.You make a life by what you give.”

Georgia M. Willis

C O M M I T M E N TLike other donors who have made provisions for the

University in their estate plans, Georgia Willis is a memberof the Cornerstone Society, a diverse community of benefactorswith at least one thing in common—a commitment to thefuture of the University of Virginia.
