About the Department:- In 1964, the Department was established. It was inaguarated by the former Prime Minister Shri
Lal Bahadur Shastri. The name was kept as “Bhuvalka Eye Hospital” as, funding for separate
building was done by Bhuvalka Trust.
MCI inspection was done in 1960 and 1981. Following which approval for MBBS & MS
Ophthalmology degree was obtained.
The outpatient department functions on all days of week. The speciality clinics also functions in
the in same timing. A dedicated team of residents and consultants is available round the clock
to cater to the emergencies in hospital and trauma centre. The department is providing free
eye-relief camps in Varanasi and surrounding 150 km area for combating blindness.
The research activities of the Department are reflected by National & International Publications,
Nooks/Chapters (22) and articles (65).
The faculties have been invited as MCI Assessor, NAAC coordinator, DNB Examiners,
chairpersons , Moderators and Guest speakers in National and State level conferences.
The department is running MBBS and MS courses and has been a centre for DNB examination.
Our triple goal is to provide comprehensive, high-quality, and structured training of Under
graduates and Postgraduates and to carry out basic and clinical research, besides ensuring
ophthalmic care to the last person in the society.

Location:- OPD services are situated in Room no 6 & 7 and speciality clinic in room no.10 in
department of ophthalmology.
•OPD Paper Rs. 20/- can be issued from main counter of room number 101. After this, you should get
yourself registered at the counter number 12 in ophthalmology department. Then come in to OPD
room number 6 and 7 , a fully centralised AC area.
•You have right to consult any doctor/ consultant on his scheduled OPD day, For seeking appointment
with any consultant on his OPD days, you may contact his/her office.
•Patients are seen on first come first serve basis. However, out of turn consultation may be provided
in case of emergency or to senior citizens.
•For consultation in Speciality you need referral from general OPD of IMS BHU or any Government
Institution.
•Investigations: After OPD consultation, the treating doctor will fill up the requisition forms for
various investigations & direct/guide you to the concerned lab /dept.
• Sample collection centre for Blood, Urine, conjuctival smear, corneal scraping ,KOH mounting etc. - Room No.14, Sample Collection Timings are:- 8:00 a.m. to 12:00 a.m.
• Certain investigations are done free of charge while others are charged as per the prevailing norms fixed by IMS BHU authority. Patients should Deposit the money only at the designated hospital Cash Counters
room no. 101 and obtain the proper receipt.
• Due to excess work load, waiting period exists for certain investigations like MRI, CT, USG etc.
• Patients are given future dates by the concerned departments. However, these may be done out of turn in
urgent situations, on recommendation of the treating doctor.
