WHAT IS SPLIT?WHAT IS SPLIT?
Split is a unique shopping experience catered to the girl’s whose style depends on her mood. The store is split in half with one side geared to-wards the edgy urban street style and the other towards the sophisticated modern classic look.
The store is located in New York City ’s SOHO district, an area with a diverse range of fash-ion. Keeping the boutique vibe, the décor of the store reflects the style of each shipment of clothes. While Split carries two distinct styles of clothing the target market is not separate for both as the clothing compliments each other.
TARGET MARKET
The Split woman is a 24 year old living a fast pace life style in New York City. Inspira-tion surrounds her, with splashes of color in the neon lights, looming concrete towers of hope and desire, and a sea of unique humans linked together by location. A few years graduated from college she car-ries a sense of certainty and is fiercely independent. The mirrored closet in her Midtown studio is cluttered with a variety of clothing. When not scurrying in the busy New York streets, she is found at art gallery openings, or sweating at the latest hip-hop yoga class. Her lifestyle is not easily de-fined so why should her style be? The Split women encompasses effortless looks into the busy days of her life.

PROCESS(it is not done in the heading form as I find this easier for me to discuss my ideas)
IDEAThe idea of doing essentially a two in one store came, when I was researching ideas to do for the Pop-up shop project (I didn’t use this idea in the end). I find for myself when I go shopping for clothing I am not look-ing for the same style each and every time, my personal style is looking for unique pieces and that can range how I am dressed. I find I always have to go to a variety of different stores for clothing as I am looking for differ-ent “out of category” items. This inspired me to do Split, a place where there are two unique styles of clothing, but have higher quality. The reason I only did one target market was because there are certain consumer who don’t just fall under one category of style preferences. I wanted to appeal to those with this store. The first step I took was finding inspiration. In this document the color and style inspiration pages of each side are the “re-search”- for lack of better words – I did for each part. Next I started to do the layout of the store and searched through wgsn for the types of clothing I felt fit each side of the store. Estimated time spent on this: 2 hoursDESIGNI used the combination of Illustrator and Photoshop for the creative components of my plan o gram and placed it into InDesign after. This project I really anted to push myself and work outside of my comfort zone. I consider myself very strong with Photoshop, as I have been using it actively since I was 15 or so. My strength in illustrator is considerably weaker, which is negative, as I want to pursue graphic design as a career. This project I decided to improve my skills and do the entire thing in illustrator. By this I mean design all the tables desks, walls, bricks, wood. The only reason I used Photoshop at all was so I could more easily manipulate the objects to what I had envisioned. This portion I spent a lot of time on as I was fine tuning my skills and had to use tutorials to figure out how to make some of the more difficult items. Below I broke it down into the following categories and why I used what I did.SIDE 1 Urban Edge• Floor: I created the floors by making a wood pattern in Illustrator and then I brought it over to Photo-shop and cut it into planks so it looked more realistic. I used a dark wood for the flooring so it would bring a more edgy urban vibe to the store and make this side a contrast with darker accents. • Walls: for the walls I used the same wood pattern I had made on illustrator and put it in planks along the wall elongate it. In order to differentiate it from the flooring I did a gradient approach to the panels and light-ened them as they got higher up. I had original wanted to do an exposed brick wall as I already had made one for the backsplash of the front counter, but in order to put in perspective I would have to restart and make a new brick wall. So I tried to and spent an hour tinkering with it and I was not happy with the end results so i changed it to the other way.
• Clothing: for the clothing in my store I used flats from WGSN and collared them in a color palette I chose for this side. I chose colors that represented the fall season well and encompassed the feeling of the clothing. The types of clothing I chose was more of an edgier sort. I chose to base it around the idea of utility. I approached this in a very mild matter and only focused on the details (pockets/ bias hemlines/ buckled dresses). The assortment of clothing I chose I feel flow really well together and have a distinct look to them. The reason I did only five as it is a boutique store with not a lot of space to be filled. Each item comes in a variety of colors so the consumer can find exactly what they want. I didn’t want to over-saturate the clothing so I restricted the amount of clothes. • Décor: the light bulbs, and wall paper I did not do as I was running out of time because I had taken on so much already on regards to the rest of the layout but I added the glow of the lights and the wiring. I chose items that played into the edgy more industrial vibe I was going for with this side of the store. SIDE TWO: Classy modern• Floor: I made the flooring super simple, as I wanted to create a stark contrast between the two halves. I created it quickly on Photoshop by just having a bright white and adding a shadow to it. The floor is representing a high glossy floor.• Walls: I created the base molding on illustrator because I felt it added a classy, sophisticated vibe to this side. The walls I made on illustrator are a glossy pale blue and white representing wallpaper. This I felt gave a feminine touch and made it a bight warmer feeling. • Clothing: for the clothing I used flats from WGSN and collared them in. the color story I created was a nautical themed with the bold reds and blues. I did not want the clothing to nautical them so I went with more mod, 1960’s inspired clothing. I chose pieces that were more streamline and had very clean lines. The idea I focused one was creating a collection timeless stylish pieces. Sure it had mod vibes to it and that was what I was inspired by, but I just wanted to incorporate small touches. For the same reason as before I only did five flats as I did not want to over saturate the clothing.• Décor: I did not design the leave wall paper as I was running out of time and didn’t see the need to recreate an entire new thing when this was exactly what I thought worked. I made the table that has the pants on it in illustrator. I coloured it in using the spray can tool in Photoshop to make it look like glass. I originally was going to make it much larger but I felt it took away from the room and smaller fit the room better in terms of size and focus. • The till: I designed the desk to incorporate the blending of the two sides (the distressed wood with the high gloss paint) I made it on illustrator and used the wood pattern I had made and put it on the till. The back drop of the till I spent over an hour following a tutorial on how to make the brick. I blended again to show the contrast with a white glossy. The reason I have it further
forward because behind it are the fitting rooms. The sign is mantled on wall behind and I made it on Photoshop, it is the logo of the store.Estimated time: 20 hours (as I was learning how to make a lot of the things- only two hours was spent photo shop)EXCEL• I made to excel sheets as it is two different shipments of clothing. I felt if I only did one side it was not developing the idea fully. I did not spend to much time of this as I had created a layout from Alex’s class last year.Estimated time: 1 hourCONCLUSIONOverall I am extremely happy with how this project turned out. Yes it could be stronger in the design part, but I went beyond what I am used to and improved my skills.
