Age Changes Everything:Injuries and the Elderly

Throughout our lives, most people can get by with relatively few health complaints. If we’re lucky, accidents and injuries can be something we don’t think about very often. But getting older complicates things. Injuries become a real concern—even if we aren’t engaging in risky behavior. Activities that used to be easy can be tricky and even a little dangerous. According to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, one in four Americans over 65 falls in the course of a year. And each year, falls result in more than 2.8 million injuries treated in ER. The scary part is, recovery isn’t always guaranteed.

Steps You Can Take To Avoid InjurySo what can you do to make yourself safer? Fortu-nately, with the aging Baby Boomer population, many organizations have devoted some energy to figuring out the best way to keep yourself as safe as possible. The Mayo Clinic has outlined some simple steps to avoid injury:✔ Check underlying causes with doctor: unsteadiness is a common side effect of medications but could also be a signal that dizziness, shortness of breath or weakness need further investigation✔ Exercise: muscle strength—especially core and leg muscles—is key to keeping balance. Keep walking and try low-impact exercise like water workouts, swimming, walking and practices like tai chi.

✔ Wear sensible shoes: shoemakers today under-stand the importance of stability and support so the offering is much more varied—and fashionable. ✔ Remove home hazards: loose rugs, low coffee tables, magazine racks and plant stands are falling hazards. Poor storage, or exposed cords can also create an obstacle course in your home. ✔ Ensure Proper Lighting: be sure your hallways, staircases, bathrooms and bedrooms have enough lighting. Turn on lights before entering rooms for ease of movement. ✔ Assistive devices: your doctor may recommend a cane or walker, but you can also install hand rails in stairways and bathrooms and a seat for the shower.Being proactive and cautious can go a long way toward keeping you safe.

After the Fall: What to do if it HappensBut sometimes an accident is, well, an accident. And sometimes it can’t be avoided. You can still do a lot to protect your long-term well-being even after an accident.✔ Seek medical attention: even if your injuries seem minor, see a doctor or visit the ER. Some injuries may be “invisible” or your adrenaline may mask the pain. The sooner you attend to an injury, the better your chance of an easy recovery. If your injuries are not those preventing functioning of the body, consider a

clinic rather than the ER or a freestanding ER. Your pocket book will thank you later. ✔ Change whatever caused the accident: remove the loose rug, install handrails or lighting or get a cane or walker. ✔ Seek legal advice: if you think your injury may have been the result of negligence of someone else, contact a legal professional to learn about your rights. Age complicates even the smallest slips and falls. It’s important to learn how to avoid them—and what do if you can’t. If you have been injured in an accident and are unsure what could be compensated, contact McCraw Law Group. We can help by explaining your options.

Look for the GoodLook for the Good This last Saturday I was blessed to be with my family and visit my son at the Texas A&M football game. The seats were typical Kyle Field seats. We almost needed binoculars to see the game from the upper deck of the North End Zone. The day was beautiful. A crisp

North wind, sun appearing and disappearing behind the clouds and an Aggie victory over Mississippi State. It was everything you think of that is positive and good about big time college football. Why am I writing about this for a November newsletter? There was a man sitting right behind us yelling and screaming the entire game and not in a good way. No one could ever do anything right, even when they did. Every call was the worse in the world, even when it wasn’t. The negativity grew and grew with every passing minute, and this man wasn’t even drinking. It got me to thinking about our attitude and how our attitude shapes the way we experience all that life has to offer. I missed an opportunity to talk to that man out of fear I would start a riot. But, with time for clear reflection, I wanted to give you the gift that he needed. There are many things in life we cannot control, the calls of the referees (or judges in my case), the way the ball bounces, actions and choices that others make can all impact us. What we can control however is how we react to what occurs. Are we thankful for the opportunities to grow, heal or overcome; or are we going to be stuck by the poor choice of another? That man at the game did his dead level best to ruin the game for himself and others. If only he had looked at the bigger picture, if only he had looked for the good rather than the bad, he would have found plenty to be Thankful for. This Thanksgiving season work to look for things to be thankful for. It may have been a tough year, but you have made it where you are! As Americans, we have much to be thankful for. We get some say as to how we are ruled. We get to choose how we spend our work lives. We get to choose how we wor-ship and who we associate with. Most importantly, we get to choose how we face the trials and tribulations of our lives. Develop an attitude of thanksgiv-ing and it will help you see the good even in trying situations.
