The mission of the Affordable Housing Conference ofMontgomery County (AHCMC) is to bring elected officials,housing and community development leaders, businessprofessionals, activists and other community members together toaddress affordable housing issues and seek solutions. TheConference’s annual summit draws more than 400 participants tohear expert panelists and speakers. The Conference alsoorganizes public/private sector Roundtables and other specialevents to highlight the need to create and preserve affordablehousing in Montgomery County, MD.

AHCMC also provides down-payment and closing costassistance through the Conference’s “Break the Barrier to HomeOwnership” Program. Grants up to $7,500 are provided toindividuals/families of moderate income who are first-timehomebuyers in Montgomery County.

TRASHThe Montgomery County

Division of SolidWasteServices provides refuse col-lection services to a portionof the county’s single-familyresidents, predominantly inthe downcounty area.

Residents living in theremainder of the county mustsubscribe for refuse collectionservices with private collec-tors or obtain service throughtheir homeowner associa-tions.

RECYCLINGThe Montgomery County

Division of SolidWaste Ser-vices provides recycling col-lection services to all single-family households in thecounty, with the exception ofhouseholds in municipalitieswhere their local jurisdictionor a private collector providesrecycling collection services.

In the blue recycling bin,

residents can recycle glassbottles and jars, aluminumcans and foil products, bi-metal steel/tin cans, aerosolcans that contained non-hazardous or non-automotivematerials, and plastic bottles,containers, jars, tubs, lids,pails, buckets and flower pots.

By using reusable con-tainers or paper lawn bags,residents may recycle grass,leaves, garden trimmings andbrush. Or, try backyard com-posting of leaves and grass, orgrasscycling by leaving grassclippings on the lawn after

mowing.To recycle scrap metal

items such as appliances,bicycles, metal furniture, lawnmowers, filing cabinets andmore, call DSWS the businessday before your recyclingcollection day to schedule aspecial scrap metal recyclingcollection.

Curbside recycling col-lection is once per week andrecyclables must be set out atthe curb by 7 a.m.

The county also recyclesother items such as comput-ers, televisions and otherconsumer electronic items,motor oil, antifreeze, tires,textiles, used cooking oil andreusable building supplies.

These items can bedropped off in person atthe Shady Grove ProcessingFacility & Transfer Station/Recycling Center located at

16101/16105 Frederick Roadin Derwood.

ANIMAL CONTROLMontgomery County

issues animal-related li-censes and permits, conductsinspections of animal-relatedbusinesses, and investigatesanimal cruelty, nuisance andbite cases.The county alsomanages a rabies preventionprogram, which includes proj-ects to encourage pet vaccina-tions, to reduce the number ofat-large dogs and cats, and tocontrol rabid wildlife. In addi-tion, the county removes deadanimals from county roads.The Division of Animal Con-trol and HumaneTreatmentis part of the MontgomeryCounty Police Department.

Montgomery County’s Fire and Rescue Services(www.montgomerycountymd.gov) are provided byvolunteers and career staff.

The Department of Fire and Rescue Servicesemploys full-time fire and rescue workers who areassigned to the various fire departments throughoutthe county.

The components of the Montgomery CountyFire and Rescue Services operate under the policy-making authority of the Fire and Rescue Commis-sion.

schools is about 149,000with students attendingone of 202 county schools.

SILVER SPRINGThe origin of the name“Silver Spring” comes

from a spring discovered by Francis Preston Blair, aneditor of the formerWashingtonGlobe newspaper.

He and his daughter, Elizabeth, were horse-back riding through awooded area near what nowis Georgia AvenuewhenBlair was thrown off hishorse.When he found the horse, its reins werecaught on a bush near a stream that Blair thought

looked silver.Blair liked the area somuch that in 1842, he

bought 1,000 acres surrounding the stream andbuilt amansion on it, calling it “Silver Spring.”

Silver Spring’s redeveloped downtown areais gaining attention from around theMetro area,anchored by theworld headquarters of DiscoveryCommunications, RoundHouseTheatre and the

American Film Institute’s SilverTheatre andCulturalCenter.

The Silver Spring Civic Building and the adjoin-ingVeterans Plaza opened last summer, and officialscontinue towork on completing the Silver SpringTransit Center, whichwill bring all forms of trans-portation together where the Silver SpringMetrosta-tion currently stands.

TAKOMA PARKIn the late 19th century, real estate developer

Benjamin Franklin Gilbert wanted an alternative tothe malaria-polluted air and dirty water ofWashing-ton, D.C.

He looked north, purchasing 100 acres strad-dling the Maryland-Washington, D.C., border.Marketing what he called the “Sylvan Suburb,”Gilbert named his 1883 purchase Takoma, anIndian name meaning “high up, near heaven,”

later adding Park to emphasize the bucolic atmo-sphere.

Takoma Park incorporated in 1890, and not longafter, the Seventh-day Adventist Church moved itsworld headquarters to the town.

In the coming decades, Adventist missionar-ies spread Takoma Park’s name around the world.The cultural upheaval of the 1960s brought anotherflood of residents, as groups of artists and musicians

settled there. Once again,Takoma Park’s name spread, this time for pro-

gressive social policies and a mayor who lay in frontof a bulldozer to stop an interstate highway.

Today, Takoma Park is a diverse “Main StreetMaryland” community of16,715 people. In 2003,Utne magazine cited the city as “probably the lefti-est ‘burb anywhere,” a badge of honor for many cityresidents.
