There is No One Right Way

Know what it is that appeals to you (e.g. the skills you’ll use, purpose, environment, perceptions)

All career paths and job categories are different Validating your perceptions and beliefs is key

Interview people doing what you envision Research If you’re employed, explore options for new

roles (existing, creating one) Get a coach and/or mentor Try new things (e.g. volunteer, part-time)


You Are CEO of Your Career! Take charge! View your career strategically. You may choose to work for a company or work

for yourself – and there are many options. Your career path may not be linear or

“traditional”. You may not know your ultimate destination!

That’s okay! You may know something more general, like…

When You Know What You Want… Focus first on increasing your skills,

abilities and knowledge. Set goals. Develop an action plan. Be consistent – daily activities. Manage your thoughts and keep

positive people around you. Use effective branding

techniques to help you shape perceptions.

Branding: Shaping Perceptions Great brands appeal to the heart and share

theirs – motivations, values, beliefs.

You are your brand. What do you need to overcome? What do you want to communicate?

Describe your work and tell your “story” in a compelling, authentic way.

Understand your audience and what appeals.

Authenticity – what you do, say and create has to come from your heart and be true for you. You can’t fake it and be successful for long!

choice for a bold, new adventure.

The distance between where you are and where you want to go is proportionate to the resistance you will get along the way.

Your “why” must be strong enough to sustain you, even when the going gets tough!

Decide what you want out of life and career (e.g. motivators, outcomes).

Study career and entrepreneurial options.

Assess your strengths, weaknesses, assets. Know what you need and get it. Retrain where needed! Determine how you will bridge any gaps.

Seek appropriate counsel, feedback and advice.

Pick your path and develop a plan to set yourself up for success!


Keep an Open Mind! We all evolve as do our likes, goals and

dreams. You can reinvent yourself many times.

You may do many things. It is unlikely you'll get everything you want in your life in one venture.

Sometimes trying on a job, career, or venture is the only way to learn if it is for you.

You can be successful! It's about preparation, learning the new game, retraining where you need to, and having the right plan that fits you.

You don't have to be good at everything – even as a leader or entrepreneur.
