McCAIN CLOSES IN ON OBAMA IN FOUR BATTLEGROUND STAT ES, QUINNIPIAC UNIVERSITY/WALL STREET JOURNAL/

COLORADO: McCain 46 – Obama 44 MICHIGAN: Obama 46 - McCain 42 MINNESOTA: Obama 46 - McCain 44 WISCONSIN: Obama 50 - McCain 39

Arizona Sen. John McCain has inched ahead of Illinois Sen. Barack Obama in Colorado; come

within inches in Minnesota and narrowed the gap in Michigan and Wisconsin, according to four

simultaneous Quinnipiac University polls of likely voters in these battleground states, conducted

in partnership with The Wall Street Journal and washingtonpost.com and released today.

Voters in each state say energy policy is more important than the war in Iraq. And by

margins of 22 to 31 percentage points, voters in each state support offshore oil drilling, and by

seven to 12-point margins, drilling in the Alaskan National Wildlife Refuge.

Sen. McCain has picked up support in almost every group in every state, especially

among independent voters and men voters. The Republican now leads Obama among

independent voters in Michigan and Minnesota. Overall results show:

• Colorado: McCain is up by a nose 46 – 44 percent, compared to a 49 – 44 percent Obama lead June 26;

• Michigan: Obama tops McCain 46 – 42 percent, compared to a 48 – 42 percent lead last time; • Minnesota: Obama edges ahead 46 – 44 percent, compared to a 54 – 37 percent Obama lead; • Wisconsin: Obama leads McCain 50 – 39 percent, compared to 52 – 39 percent.

“Sen. Barack Obama’s post-primary bubble hasn’t burst, but it is leaking a bit. It’s been a

good month for Sen. John McCain. His movement in these key states, not large except for

Minnesota, jibes with the tightening we are seeing in the national polls,” said Peter Brown,

assistant director of the Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.

“The good news for McCain is that he has improved his standing in Colorado and

Michigan, two states that are critical to each man’s strategy. Obama wants to break through in the

Rocky Mountain and Southwestern states that have been going Republican for decades. McCain

sees recently Democratic Michigan as his top takeaway target,” Brown added.

“One reason for McCain’s progress may be the energy issue. The results show increased

support for additional drilling – which McCain supports and Obama opposes. Roughly one in ten

voters say they have changed their minds and now favor drilling because of the jump in energy

prices. They support Obama, but with voters saying that the energy issue is now more important

to their presidential vote than is the war in Iraq, this group represents an opportunity for the

Republican.

“Voters are even more closely divided when it comes to which candidate’s spouse best fits

the image of a First Lady than they are in their vote for president.”

President Bush’s approval ratings are:

• 31 – 62 percent in Colorado; • 25 – 69 percent in Michigan; • 28 – 66 percent in Minnesota; • 26 – 68 percent in Wisconsin.

Colorado

Obama leads 50 – 39 percent among Colorado women likely voters, while men back

McCain 55 – 37 percent. White voters back McCain 51 – 41 percent as Hispanic voters go with

Obama 57 – 29 percent. Obama leads 51 – 43 percent with voters 18 to 34 years old, while

voters 35 to 54 are tied 46 – 46 percent. McCain leads 51 – 37 percent among voters over 55.

Voters say 37 – 27 percent that Cindy McCain better fits their idea of a First Lady than

Michelle Obama. Men prefer Ms. McCain 43 – 20 percent while women split with 33 percent for

Ms. Obama and 32 percent for Ms. McCain.

“Not surprisingly, Obama’s strength is in the Denver/Boulder precincts where he leads

almost two-to-one, while he trails everywhere else in the state. As the presidential race has tilted a

bit toward McCain, GOP Senate candidate Bob Schaffer has moved into a dead heat after trailing

Democrat Mark Udall by 10 points a month ago,” Brown said.

In the U.S. Senate race, U.S. Rep. Mark Udall, the Democrat, and Republican Robert

Schaffer are tied 44 – 44 percent, compared to a 48 – 38 percent Udall lead June 26.

Colorado voters support 68 – 15 percent a constitutional amendment outlawing

discrimination or preferential treatment in public employment, contracting or education.

By a 50 – 39 percent margin, Colorado voters say a candidate’s position on energy policy

is more important than their position on the war in Iraq. Voter split 33 – 33 percent on which

candidate has the best energy policy, with 34 percent undecided.

Michigan

Michigan women voters back Obama 50 – 38 percent, while men back McCain 47 – 42 percent.

White voters back McCain 48 – 40 percent, as black voters support Obama 90 – 4 percent. The

Democrat leads 51 – 41 percent among voters 18 to 34, a big drop, and squeaks by 46 – 43 percent

among voters 35 to 54. Voters over 55 tie 43 – 43 percent.

Voters split on who better fits their idea of a First Lady, with Obama at 29 percent and McCain

at 28 percent. Women prefer Obama 33 – 25 percent as men like McCain 31 – 25 percent.

A candidate’s energy policy is more important than his position on the war in Iraq,

Michigan likely voters say 50 – 40 percent. Obama has the best program for helping solve the

crisis and making America less dependent on foreign oil, voters say 35 – 28 percent.

“Obama and McCain are doing equally well in raiding the other party’s base: Ten percent

of 2004 Kerry voters favor McCain, while 13 percent of 2004 Bush backers are with Obama. In

order to close the gap, McCain needs to do a little bit better winning back the Democrats who

voted for Ronald Reagan and their children,” Brown said.

Minnesota

Obama tops McCain 51 – 38 percent with women, while men back McCain 49 – 42

percent. White voters split 45 – 45 percent. The Democrat leads 50 – 45 percent among voters

18 to 34 years old. Voters 35 to 54 split, with 45 percent for Obama and 44 percent for McCain

with the Democrat up 46 – 42 percent among voters over 55.

In the First Lady contest, 28 percent prefer Obama while 26 percent back McCain.

Women back Obama 32 – 24 percent and men back McCain 28 – 25 percent.

By a 49 – 41 percent margin, Minnesota voters say a candidate’s energy policy is more

important than his policy on the war in Iraq. And voters say 34 – 26 percent, with 40 percent

undecided, that Obama has the best energy policy.

In the Minnesota U.S. Senate race, Republican incumbent Sen. Norm Coleman tops

Democrat Al Franken 53 – 38 percent, compared to 51 – 41 percent June 26.

“Sen. McCain is gaining strength, particularly among younger voters, independents and

the Twin Cities suburbs, but the situation remains fluid with more than a third of independent

voters saying their minds are not yet made up,” said Clay F. Richards, assistant director of the

Quinnipiac University Polling Institute.

“Democrat Al Franken still faces an uphill battle in his quest to unseat Sen. Norm

Coleman, with almost 20 percent of the voters in his own party voting for the Republican

incumbent.”

Wisconsin

Wisconsin women likely voters back Obama 56 – 31 percent while men back McCain

49 – 43 percent. White voters back Obama 48 – 42 percent. He leads 60 – 31 percent among

voters 18 to 34 years old, 47 – 43 percent among voters 35 to 54 years old and 47 – 41 percent

among voters over 55.

Voters split on which spouse better fits their idea of a First Lady, with 29 percent for

Obama and 28 percent for McCain. Women like Obama 33 – 24 percent, while men like McCain

32 – 24 percent.

Wisconsin voters say 52 – 41 percent that a candidate’s energy policy is more important

than his policy for the war in Iraq, and say 34 – 29 percent that Obama has the best energy policy.

“Wisconsin remains the most liberal of swing states, giving Obama a comfortable double-

digit lead, although men and Catholics prefer McCain. As it is everywhere, energy is emerging as

a dominant campaign issue. Wisconsin voters feel Obama is the best candidate to address the

energy crisis,” Richards said.

From July 14 – 22, Quinnipiac University surveyed:

• 1,425 Colorado likely voters with a margin of error of +/- 2.6 percent; • 1,684 Michigan likely voters with a margin of error of +/- 2.4 percent; • 1,261 Minnesota likely voters with a margin of error of +/- 2.8 percent; • 1,094 Wisconsin likely voters with a margin of error of +/- 3 percent.
