MCA: ageing towards perfection
A highly topical issue for the Master’s course this year 7 October 2014
The call for applications is now open to this year’s Master in Complex Actions at SISSA (MCA), the course that trains students to face up to the challenges of the global markets by combining management skills with leading-‐edge science. This year’s challenge is the ageing of the world population: how best to deal with this new global scenario and turn a problem into a resource? As in the past, the Master’s course will accept a limited number of selected students, and classes will be held by international experts: scientists, managers and professionals working in this and in apparently unrelated fields. A unique opportunity for participants, also thanks to the grants and scholarships offered by the Master’s and its partners. Applications are available online on the new MCA website, at http://mca.sissa.it/news/call-‐open and will remain open until November 20.
There will be no less than two billion individuals aged over 60 in the year 2050: this is a prediction by the World Health Organization, a few days ago. A cause for concern or, to the contrary, an opportunity to be seized? This is the question that theMaster’s in Complex Actions of the International School for Advanced Studies (SISSA) of Trieste will attempt to address this coming year. The goal of the MCA is to train “hybrid” professional figures able to combine advanced scientific and technological knowledge with expertise in business management, and with the ability to approach complex processes in a non-‐standard innovative manner. The topical issue chosen this year is “Ageing towards perfection”. Europe (but not only) is in the midst of an unprecedented demographic change, characterised by the lengthening of its citizens’ life expectancy. Scientific research and technological innovation are critical factors that will definitely help to face up to the ageing population phenomenon. A complex scenario that the MCA students will be able to analyse first-‐hand: they will have the opportunity to meet policy makers, researchers, business people and other key figures to learn about the most recent scientific discoveries and applications, and they will enter a network for the exchange of ideas which extends to the major players in the field. The Master’s course, which is entirely held in English, is suited to PhD students and PhD graduates in scientific subjects, talented researchers working in enterprises with a high rate of innovation, entrepreneurs (including would-‐be entrepreneurs) with a scientific background. Applications should be submitted by 12.00 noon on November 20, 2014, online on the new website http://mca.sissa.it/news/call-‐open. Admission interviews will be held at SISSA on November 28. MCA is a Master’s course by the International School for Advanced Studies (SISSA), supported by a number of institutions including the Fondazione Cassa di Risparmio di Trieste and the Friuli Venezia Giulia Region.
