AS DEFINED BY GARTNER

A BYOD strategy allows employees to use the smartphone or tablet of their choosing, instead of being tied to their employer's selection, which has historically been a BlackBerry device.

BYOD WORKS FOR SOME

Hanover Public School District is committed to aiding students and staff in creating a 21st century learning environment. We are piloting a new policy which will aid in this goal. Students and staff will now be able to access our wireless network with their personal devices (laptops, netbooks, tablets, smart phones, etc.) during the school day.

BUT BYOD HAS RISKS

"If employees still want to play Angry Birds, let them get their own devices for doing that and anything else they want to do that is not work-related," said Jeff Moss, founder and director of Black Hat.

THE FACTS: BYOD PHENOMENON TAIL

WAGGING THE DOG

• Almost 40 percent of companies will stop providing devices to workers by 2016, Gartner found, based on a global survey of CIOs.

• Results of Forrester’s Forrsights Workforce Employee Survey, Q2 2012 show that more than two-thirds of North American and European information workers personally choose the smartphones and tablets they use for work, and that 46% of employees personally choose work laptops that are not on the company-approved device list.

BYOD ISSUES

• If my cell phone gets lost and the company wipes it – what about my personal data?

• If my IPOD is also used by my child – what are the potential dangers?

• Your BYOD Device is a cloud connected, hard drive included data transfer device – hello WikiLeaks

• If you are OK with sharing company data on a personal device – are you also OK sharing personal data with your IT dept, manager or CEO? What pictures do you have, what bank statements do you have, what sites do you visit? This is also now accessible by your employer
