The Campus for Human Development is a religious non-profit organization, which was formed in 1995 by the merger of three other organizations: Room In The Inn, The Guest House, and FOCUS (Faith Organizations in Covenant for Understanding and Service. All three provided services to the homeless in Nashville. The union resulted in combining the three at one location to provide more comprehensive services. The Campus is a model of public/private partnership, committed not only to providing enhanced services to the homeless but also to improving the "system" by which these services are delivered.

Campus for Human Development has already seen an increase in traffic due to unemployment in Tennessee which hit 8.6 percent in January, up a whopping 1 percentage point from December’s rate of 7.6 percent and substantially worse than the national average, also 7.6 percent. That one percent is more than a number.. It is people that have been cast aside.

Nashville’s homeless population is an estimated 2,500 to 3,000 and social service agencies say they serve 11,000 people experiencing short- or long-term homelessness each year.

Education offers the key to successful acclimation into society. It is no surprise that education is the primary method whereby individuals can build the skills and credentials they need to become successful, contributing adults in the workplace. We can not allow the fact that mainstream, traditional public school systems have not provided this critical resource for many the participants, especially those serving low-income neighborhoods and families.

We must acknowledge these factors but refuse to allow it to become a crutch for failure. I believe that the key is to deinstitutionalize them through improving their ability to interact with others and self perception. That is why I believe the following assessment tools is essential to building the foundation that will allow them to expand into other venues of education.

Unfortunately the majority of the individuals that utilize the Campus for Human Development facilities could be labeled as habitual criminal offenders; while others have fallen through the cracks of society. Their experience in the correctional system/with the hardships of unpredictability that life provides has hindered the development of interpersonal skills

In order to help individuals along and show their progress, I have chosen certain assessment tools.

An assessment is an alternative to measurement by freeing up the dependence of statistics by allowing the teacher (abbot) gauge a student through personal observations. Assessment is important because it gives the educator a chance to place humanity in gauging a student’s progress.

Illiteracy limits the individual from being

successful in the society and run the risk of taking the wrong path to a stable life. Being literate is the key to counter the societal ills caused by insufficient interpersonal skills .Being literate is the key to counter the societal ills caused by insufficient interpersonal skills.

I believe WYNN™ Literacy Software Solution is the key to counter the revolving door of confusion that the world of illiteracy causes.

Wynn is a literacy software tool that use a bimodal (highlighting text while it is spoken) to print, electronic, and Internet documents; the ability to customize text for easier reading; study tools to aid with comprehension and retention of the reading material; and tools to help with writing. This appeals to the variety of learning skills.

Adult non readers work very hard to cover up or compensate for their lack of reading skill. Education offers the key to successful acclimation into society. It is the primary method where individuals can build the skills and credentials they need to become successful in the workplace.
