Good accommodation on and around the Hardangervidda mountain plateau

You will find a series of places to stay and eat along the national road 7 and within the plateau. Most of these places are privately-owned, but there are also several lodges that belong to the Norwegian Trekking Association (DNT) or DNT’s Bergen branch. Hiking at your own paceWe have three valleys in Eidfjord leading from the fjord to the mountains: Simadal, Hjølmadalen and Måbødalen. Our ancestors laid stone paths through the valleys so that they could utilize the resources found in the mountains. You can still find evidence for the existence of our ancestors. For example, animal trapping pits and old stone huts. The former transport routes are still well preserved, and it is with great respect to our ancestors that today we can utilize these routes. There are a variety of hiking opportunities on and around the Hardangervidda. From shorter, family-friendly mountain tours and hikes from mountain lodge to mountain lodge in flat terrain, to challenging summit tours. Use this leaflet to plan a longer tour. Biking close to natureRiding bikes is very popular on the Hardangervidda. You get an extra closeness with nature. The gravel road Tinnhølvegen to Trondsbu/Tinnhølen lake, and the path to “Byen” have a total length of 15 kilometres and take you a long way into the national park. Isdalsvegen is another popular alternative. If you like a demanding and challenging ride then you should try the old road up the Måbødalen valley (five kilometres) or the road up from Øvre Eidfjord, the Hjølmadalen valley to 900 metres above sealevel (ten kilometres). Remember to respect the natural environment. Ask at the tourist information office for the condition and state of these roads before you start the tour!

Public rights of way – “Allemannsretten”Members of the public are allowed to roam and camp freely in the countryside. This applies to forests and mountains, and by the fjord, rivers and lakes, irrespective of who the landowner is. You can pick berries, mushrooms and flowers, and catch saltwater fish for free in the fjord. You shall always behave responsibly and respect the natural environment.

Your dog – your companionYou can take your four-legged friend with you on a hiking tour, but please remember that generally in the period between April 1 and August 20 the dog has to be on a leash. Where cattle are grazing on uncultivated land, this policy applies from April 1st to December 1st. On cultivated land this policy applies all year round. Pay attention to game and livestock. Remember that some people are afraid of, or allergic to, dogs. Most of the mountain lodges have suitable facilities for the accommodation of dogs.

Be careful with firePlease note that making a camp fire is prohibited on uncultivated land between April 15 and September 15. If you need to make a fire for coffee and food preparation then you must make the fire on damp sand or gravel and put stones around it. Don’t make a camp fire on flat rocks; the heat can break the rock. Make sure that the fire is completely extinguished before you continue your hike.

PLAN YOUR HIKE WELL IN ADVANCE

It is important to think about what to pack in your backpack. The weather can change very quickly and you can experience all four seasons in the course of a few hours.

Tell someone you know where you will hike to and remember that there will not be a mobile phone signal everywhere in the mountains. Distances and times of hikes given in this leaflet are just estimates. When hiking with children we recommend adding more time for your walk. Remember that the hiking season on the Hardangervidda mountain plateau starts in July. Only then are the mountain lodges open, the bridges useable, and the roads to Tinnhølen and Hjølmaberget open to traffic.

At www.turistforeningen.no and www.ut.no you can find lots of useful advice with descriptions of the mountain lodges and routes. You will need a DNT-key for the self-service and un-serviced cabins, and you will have to pay for your stay and your food. This is done by means of a payment authorization or you can deposit an envelope with cash at the cabin. You can buy membership of the DNT and rent a DNT-key at the tourist information office.

SIMADALEN - KJEÅSEN - SIMADALEN (2-4h return)Drive to the Sima power plant, park your car in the parking lot, look for the sign “Kjeåsen” and follow the path along the fjord until you can see a little red cottage. Here the trail starts to go up, marked with red “T”s. The path goes uphill, passing a stream which is the last possible place to fill your water bottle. Approx. 300 m above the fjord are the famous logs that are laid over steel bolts in the mountain wall, the fjord is 300 m directly below you. The path continues steep uphill, also partly on ladders. Close to the top is a stone staircase, and you’ll see the farm. The trip is suitable all summer long from approx. May 15th to October (the path has to be free of snow).

STOREGJEL - VØRINGSFOSSEN - STOREGJEL (1h 30min return)This is a great hike where you can experience the view of the Vøringfossen waterfall from below. Park your car on the side road by Storegjel, between the second and third tunnel in the Måbødalen valley (upper exit of the Måbøtunnel). Follow the footpath approximately 300 metres down the old road. By the turn there is a sign to “Vøringsfossen”, and there the footpath starts to descend to the river. Follow the path towards the waterfall and walk over a suspension bridge. Only one person at a time can cross the suspension bridge. Be aware that the area by the waterfall is very slippery because of splashing water. The footpath towards the waterfall goes partly over unstable rocks, so please be careful. This hike is possible from approximately May 15 until October (the path has to be free of snow). MÅBØ MUSEUM - MÅBØBERGET - VØRINGSFOSSEN - MÅBØ MUSEUM (3-4h return) This is one of the old paths leading up from Eidfjord onto the Hardangervidda plateau. The hike starts at Måbø museum, where you can park your car. You pass the museum, continue further into the valley and cross the bridge over the river. From here begins a zigzag climb up, approximately 1,300 well preserved steps towards the top. On top of the mountain, follow the footpath and arrive at the Vøringfoss Cafeteria. From here you can follow the old road back to Måbø museum (approximately five kilometres). Ask at the tourist information office about the condition and state of the old road, and if the road is open, before you start the hike. This hike is possible from the end of June until autumn. We recommend taking something to drink.

HJØLMABERGET - VIVELID/VALURFOSSEN - HJØLMABERGET (3h return)This is a magnificent hike towards the popular Veigdalen valley. In Øvre Eidfjord, you head for Hjølmo and follow this road (not suitable for vehicles longer than six metres) for approximately 10 kilometres through dramatic scenery, which make this drive an experience in itself. From the road you can see the Vedalsfossen waterfall on your right-hand side. Park your car on the upper car park at Hjølmaberget (by the river Berdølo), and follow the marked footpath for approximately one-and-a-half hours to Vivelid. Have a coffee and a bite to eat at Vivelid Fjellstova. You can return the same way to the car park, or you may continue from Vivelid via the Valurfossen waterfall, which falls 272 metres into the Hjølmadalen valley. This footpath is partly unmarked and it will take you a bit longer to finish your tour.

HJØLMABERGET - VIVELID - FLJODAL - SÅTEFJELL - HJØLMABERGET (4h round-trip) Follow the first part of the approximately one-and-a-half hour hike to Vivelid (see the description of the Hjølmaberget – Vivelid – Hjølmaberget route). Continue for 30 minutes until the turning towards Hedlo. From here there is a steep walk up to the Skrubbhamrane and across a “summer” bridge over the creek. You continue past the turning towards Liseth and walk via the Storasåta (Såtefjell) mountain, where you can enjoy fabulous views over the surrounding mountains, fjords and glaciers. Walk down to the turning onto the footpath from Vivelid. Continue on that path and past another turning from Liseth. There you will walk further down through the wood back to the car park, which takes you approximately two hours.

TINNHØLEN - STIGSTUV - BJOREIDALSHØGDA - TINNHØLEN (5 - 6h round-trip) This is a great hike in easy terrain. Drive on the Tinnhølvegen gravel road to the car park at Lake Tinnhølen or take the Viddabussen minibus. Follow the marked footpath to the Stigstuv mountain lodge, which takes approximately One-and-a-half hours. Then continue on the footpath to Bjoreidalshøgda, which takes approximately two-and-a-half hours, and thereafter the Tinnhølvegen footpath and gravel road back to Trondsbu/Tinnhølen, which takes approximately two hours. Both Trondsbu Turisthytta and Stigstuv Turisthytta mountain lodges offer food. Check the opening hours. If this walk is too long, you can walk from Stigstuv back to the car park, making the walk three hours in total.

COMBINED BIKE RIDE AND HIKE: DYRANUT - TRONDSBU - STIGSTUV - TRONDSBU - DYRANUT (7-10h return)This is a fabulous one-day hike and bike ride. You park your car at the Dyranut mountain lodge. Ride your bike for approximately one kilometre on route 7 and take the Tinnhølvegen road by Tråastølen. Ride your bike 11 kilometres to the Trondsbu mountain lodge by the Tinnhølen lake, and then four-five kilometres to “Byen”. From here you have to walk to the Stigstuv mountain lodge, which takes about one hour. Both Trondbu Turisthytta and Stigstuv Turisthytta mountain lodges offer food. Check the opening hours. Go back the same way. Alternatively you can cycle from Dyranut to Bjoreidalshøgda, a distance of approximately five kilometres, walk to Stigstuv (there and back approximately two-and-a-half hours each way), and then ride your bike back to Dyranut.

HIKE TO SANDHAUG/BESSO WITH ANGLING IN NORMANNSLÅGEN (2 - 3 days)Enjoy the Hardangervidda mountain plateau at its best! Drive the Tinnhølvegen road and park your car at the car park by Tinnhølen lake or take the Viddabussen minibus. Walk on a marked trail from Tinnhølen to the Sandhaug mountain lodge, which takes approximately four hours, or to Besso, which takes approximately five-and-a-half hours. We recommend that you stay overnight and eat at the Sandhaug Turisthytte mountain lodge or at the Besso mountain lodge, and spend a whole day angling at the Normannslågen lake. You can buy a fishing license for the state-owned land “Statsallmenningen” at the mountain lodge or at the tourist information office. Return to Trondsbu/Tinnhølen.

HALNE - KRÆKKJA - FAGERHEIM (3h one-way)Start by Halne. Follow a narrow pass and then the marked footpath from Stigstuv and Dyranut. Follow the footpath and the signs to Krækkja, past the turning towards Kjeldebu, and then on past the turning towards Finse. From here it is just a short walk to Krækkja. From Krækkja the hike continues, taking approximately one-and-a-half hours to Fagerheim. At Fagerheim Fjellstugu mountain lodge you can enjoy a nice dinner before you take the bus back to Halne.

HALNE - SKAUPA - RAUHELLEREN (4h one-way and boat trip)Start by Halne. Take the “Halnekongen” boat from Halne to Skaupa (check the boat schedules on www.halne.no). From Skaupa, it is approximately four hours to the Rauhelleren Turisthytte, mountain lodge in hilly terrain over Seltjørndalen and Skyttarbudalen, before crossing the path called “Store Nordmannsslepa” just west of the Tormodsbrotet. Walk past the turning to Stigstuv and under the Rauhellerskorane (where there is a nice echo and the possibility of seeing rough-legged buzzards). Here there is a superb view towards the west over the Langesjøen lake with the Hårteigen mountain in the background. At the Rauhelleren Turisthytte mountain lodge you can enjoy a nice meal and stay overnight before the return trip, or continue the next day.

HALNE - SKAUPA - RAUHELLEREN - STIGSTUV - HALNE (3 days round-trip)The first leg goes from Halne to Rauhelleren, approximately four hours plus boat trip (see the description of the Halne – Skaupa – Rauhelleren route). The following day, continue from Rauhelleren to Stigstuv, a walk of approximately four hours. The last leg is from Stigstuv to Halne, a walk of approximately four hours. This is a nice family hike, where the stages are not too long. Enjoy this hike with nice meals and comfortable beds in the mountain lodges.

DYRANUT - KJELDEBU - LISETH (2 days, one-way)Start at Dyranut, on the “roof of Norway”- the Hardangervidda mountain plateau. Follow the marked trail to the Kjeldebu self-service cabin, a walk of approximately three hours. The next day the hike continues for approximately six hours to Liseth. Perhaps you will be in time for dinner at the Liseth Pensjonat guest house before you take the bus back to your car at Dyranut. If you were not in time for dinner at Liseth, you can enjoy a well-deserved dinner at the Dyranut mountain lodge.

KJELDEBU - FINSE (9h one-way)You can continue the hike from Kjeldebu (see the description of the Dyranut – Kjeldebu – Liseth hike) to Finse on the eastern side of the Hardangerjøkulen glacier. This is a long and rather hard hike, and we recommend that you plan the hike well in advance. Read the trail description on www.ut.no and use proper maps. We recommend dinner and an overnight stay at the Finsehytta mountain lodge before you take the train from Finse to Haugastøl/Geilo and take the bus back to Liseth/Fossli.

LISETH/FOSSLI - REMBESDALSETER - FINSE (2 days, one-way)We recommend that you plan this hike well in advance. Read the trail description on www.ut.no and use proper maps. Park your car at Liseth or Fossli. The first day of the hike, which goes from Liseth/Fossli to Rembesdalseter, takes approximately eight hours and is less demanding than the hike on day two, which requires good mountain skills. You will experience an impressive view over Simadal and the fjord. With the Hardangerjøkulen glacier right outside the living room window, this is an attractive hike for many people, especially those with an interest in glacier walks. The terrain in the area is demanding, especially when it is wet because of areas with slippery rocks. Continue the hike the next day from Rembesdalseter to Finse, a walk of approximately eight hours. Important! Remember to follow the red T-signs! In the highest areas, it can be difficult to follow the trail because the landmarks may be covered with snow, and the building of the temporary “summer” bridges can often be delayed because of the snow conditions. We recommend dinner and an overnight stay at the Finsehytta mountain lodge before you take the train from Finse to Haugastøl/Geilo and from there the bus back to Liseth/Fossli.

The Tinnhølvegen road is a public toll road. You exit route 7 approximately 1 km from Dyranut and pay the toll (Nok 100,-) at Tråastølen. Then you can drive the 11 km long gravel road to Trondsbu by the Tinnhølen lake (where there is a car park). The toll road is free of charge for bikes.
