ABOUT THE WOLVESWalla Walla University welcomes back a solid core from its 2010-11 team this season. First-year head coach Jimmy Hill takes over aft er serving as Associate Head Coach last year. Th e Wolves bring back four starters, but lose leading scorer Tristan Greenidge to graduation. WWU should be led by scoring threat Mark Moore. Th e senior averaged 14.39 points per game in the 2009-10 season. Walla Walla fi nished last year 6-24.

THEY’RE GOING STREAKINGTh e Eastern Oregon University men’s basketball team cracked the Top 10 in the NAIA Div. 2 Top 25 in the last poll of the 2010-11 season. Th e Mountaineers climbed from No. 11 to No. 10 in the fi nal edition of the poll for the season. EOU rode a nine-game win streak into the Cascade Collegiate Conference championships before falling at Oregon Tech. EOU returned to the top 10 for the 15th time in school history, and third time last season. Eastern last appeared in the top 10 in the second rating of the season. Eastern Oregon appeared in the Top 25 for a school-record 22nd straight time. Th e Mountaineers have been in the Top 25 in 27 of the last 28 polls. EOU has been in the Top 25 in every poll dating back to the 2009-10 preseason poll when it received votes.

QUICK LOOK AT THE ROSTEREastern Oregon returns nine players from last year’s squad which went 26-7 overall and 14-4 in conference play. Returners include: seniors Jeff Ranstrom, Travares Peterson, Jamar John-son and Jason Mumm. Th e returning juniors include: Anthony Brown, Cody Th urmond, and Robert Barrington. Returning sophomores are Kyllian Wood and Jared Heitzman. EOU has nine newcomers, adding fi ve transfers and four prep standouts. Transfers include: Trent Roos (Chemeketa CC), John Buhler (Big Bend CC), JaMier Morris (Pima CC), Ervin Felder (Pima CC) and Mason Jones (Saddleback College). Th e freshmen class includes: Kalvin Johanson (Pullman, Wash.), Page Beeler (Allen, Texas), Darius Howard (Seattle, Wash.) and Derek Maloney (Kimberly, Idaho).

THE TWENTY WIN CLUBEastern had its fi ft h straight 20-win season in 2010-11. Before the fi ve-year streak, the Mountaineers had four 20-win seasons in the 81-year history of men’s basketball, with the last coming in 1965-66. Last season’s squad became the 20th team to reach 16 wins in school history. Th e 2007-08 team had the school’s best record at 26-6. Th at team was 17-3 aft er 20 games, and started 25-4.

LEAGUE OF EXTRAORDINARIESEastern Oregon is one of four teams to have made it to the past four second rounds at the NAIA Div. 2 National Tournament. Two programs in those four, Oregon Tech and EOU, are from the Cascade Collegiate Conference. Th ere are only 10 teams that have made the national tournament in each of the past four seasons, including Eastern Oregon.

EASTERN TABBED SECOND IN CCCTh e Eastern Oregon University men’s basketball team was tabbed second in the Cascade Col-legiate Conference coaches’ preseason poll. Th ree-time defending champion Oregon Tech is favored to hold on to its Cascade Collegiate Conference crown in men’s basketball, according to a preseason poll of the league’s 10 head coaches. Tech received seven fi rst-place votes and 97 points total in earning the favorites’ tag for the 2011-12 season. Eastern Oregon picked up two fi rst place votes and 88 points to place second. College of Idaho, which earned one fi rst-place vote, totaled 77 points and placed third. Th e Yotes were followed by Concordia (55 points), Corban (51), Northwest (51), Southern Oregon (50), Warner Pacifi c (50), Evergreen (20) and Northwest Christian (11).

EOU LANDS DUO ON CCC LISTEastern Oregon University men’s basketball student-athletes, Anthony Brown and Jamar Johnson, were named to the Cascade Collegiate Conference preseason team Tuesday. College of Idaho’s Matt Ballenger, an honorable mention NAIA All-American as a junior last season, was voted the Player of the Year. Balloting was by the CCC’s 10 head coaches. College of Idaho was one of fi ve programs with multiple players on the all-star team.

LA GRANDE, Ore. – Th e No. 15 Eastern Oregon University men’s basketball team eased past Walla Walla University, 108-53.

Th e Mountaineers (18-5) (9-4) made a school-record 18 three-pointers in the victory. EOU entered the game leading NAIA Div. 2 with an average of 10 three-point-ers made per game. It marked the 14th time this season Eastern made at least 10 three-pointers in a game. Th e Mountaineers now lead the nation in total three-point-ers made as well with 237. EOU is four three-pointers away from breaking the 2003-04 season’s school record of three-pointers made in a single season.

Eastern Oregon fi nished with six double-digit scorers led by Th omas McCarthy’s game-high 18 points. Th e senior moved to fi ft h on the EOU all-time list with his 74th career made three-pointer. He is 14 shy of Ryan Orton’s school record. McCarthy fi nished 7 of 10 from the fi eld, including 4 of 6 from behind the arc Wednesday.

Jamar Johnson added 16 points for Eastern. Cody Th urmond, JC Cook, and Travares Peterson all had 14 points. Jeff Ranstrom scored 11 points. McCarthy threw a career-high nine assists. Kyllian Wood grabbed a career-high nine rebounds.

Eastern Oregon opened the game with a 7-0 lead and stretched it to 20-4 at the 12:11 mark of the fi rst half. Th e Mountaineers’ largest lead of the fi rst half came with 2:48 remaining, 45-21. EOU led 52-29 at halft ime. Eastern began the second half on a 25-8 run in the fi rst seven minutes of the half. Th e fi nal score was the widest margin of the game.

Th e Moun-taineers shot a season-high 64 percent from the fi eld. EOU hit 42 of its 65 attempts from the fi eld. East-ern Oregon was 18 of 33 from behind the arc, and 6 of 7 from the free-throw line. Th e Mountaineers were 21 for 28 in the second half from the fi eld. WWU shot 43 percent from the fi eld in the game, 6 of 19 from three-point range, and 5 for 6 from the charity stripe.

Eastern outrebounded Walla Walla, 32-19. Th e Moun-taineers move to the top of the Cascade Collegiate Conference in assists per game aft er throwing 25 against the Wolves. EOU forced 21 Walla Walla turnovers, while it committed eight.

Th e Wolves (3-21) were paced by Tom Creasey’s 14 points. Tristan Greenidge added 12 points. Greenidge and Bruce Doherty each fi nished with four rebounds. Josh Henderson had four assists. WWU began the season 0-17, but entered Wednesday’s matchup winners of three its last six games.

It was the third meeting this season between Eastern Oregon and Walla Walla. Th e Mountaineers won all three by an average margin of 37 points. Th e Wolves held EOU to its lowest point total of the season in the last meeting in College Place, Wash. on Nov. 17, 65-50.

EOU HOOPS ON RADIOEastern Oregon University women’s and men’s basketball returns to the radio this season on KUBQ 98.7 FM. KUBQ helps welcome Eastern basketball to the Grande Ronde Valley through FM transmission. Games will also be avail-able worldwide through internet streaming on EOUSports.com. Th e KUBQ broadcast will also be the audio on the video stream on EOUSports.com. Fans will be able to watch and listen to ev-ery home game this season. A select number of non-conference away games and many Cascade Collegiate Conference road games will be avail-able with an EOU broadcast calling the action on KUBQ. Every conference game will be broadcast on 98.7 FM either through an opponent’s feed or an EOU broadcast.

BASKETBALL HAS WEEKLY SHOWTh e Eastern Oregon University basketball programs will have their own radio talk show on Monday’s 12-1 p.m. on KUBQ 98.7 FM. Moun-taineer fans can tune into 98.7 FM and listen to EOU basketball analysis, game recaps, game pre-views, and interviews with coaches and players. Th e whole hour is devoted to Eastern Oregon women’s and men’s basketball. EOU Assistant Athletic Director, Barrett Henderson, and John Mallory, host of the Johnny Ballgame Show, will co-host each broadcast each week. Not only will Mountaineer basketball be discussed each Mon-day, but the Cascade Collegiate Conference as a whole will be broken down by the show’s hosts. Th e fi rst broadcast will begin at 3 p.m. Monday on KUBQ 98.7 FM locally in La Grande and on EOUSports.com worldwide. Th e show will be available through podcast on each Tuesday morning.

EASTERN BEGINS SEASON IN TOP 10Th e Eastern Oregon University men’s basketball team was ranked No. 10 in the NAIA Div. 2 National Top 25 Preseason Poll Monday. Eastern fi nished last season aft er its fourth consecutive second round trip at the national tournament in Point Lookout, Mo. EOU was ranked No. 10 in the fi nal poll of 2010-11 aft er going 26-7. Eastern Oregon has been ranked in 23 straight Top 25 polls, the longest streak in school history. Th e Mountaineers had their best preseason ranking in the 2008-09 season when they started at No. 6. EOU climbed to No. 3 in the national poll that season, the highest in school history, before end-ing the season in the national quarterfi nals.
