2014-15 UCONN BASKETBALL

The UConn men’s basketball team plays the first of seven regular-season games at the XL Center, entertaining Coppin State University of Baltimore in a non-conference game. The game begins at 4 p.m. and will be televised by SNY. The Huskies (3-3), out to snap a three-game losing streak, are coming off a 45-44 loss to Yale at Gampel Pavilion on Dec. 5, before taking a nine-day break for exams. UConn is led by senior guard Ryan Boatright, who tops the Huskies as well as the American Athletic Conference in scoring at 18.3 points per game. He is also averaging a team-leading 4.3 assists per game as well as 5.8 rebounds. Freshman Daniel Hamilton also averages double figures at 12.9 ppg and he and sophomore Kentan Facey share the team lead in rebounding at 6.5 per game. Coppin State (1-8), out of the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference, will also be trying to break a losing streak of four in a row after dropping a 105-64 decision to Hofstra on Wednesday. The Eagles are led by senior forward Arnold Fripp (11.7 ppg) and senior guard Taariq Cephas (11.1 ppg).

Kevin Ollie is in his third season as the 18th head coach of the UConn men’s basketball program, with a career record of 55-21. He is the only head coach in UConn history to reach 50 victories in his first two years and his .724 winning percentage is the best of any coach in UConn history who has coached more than 20 games.

UConn is in its fifth season as a television partner of the SNY network. The Huskies have a record of 38-8 (.826) in games televised by SNY. UConn went 11-2 on SNY in 2010-11, 9-4 on SNY in 2011-12, 12-1 in 2012-13, 5-0 in 2013-14 and is 1-1 so far in 2014-15. Tonight’s game is the third of five UConn games on SNY this season.

UP NEXT: UConn will play its fourth neutral-site game of the season when it travels to the Izod Center in East Rutherford, N.J. to challenge nationally-ranked Duke on Thursday, Dec. 18. The game will begin at 8 p.m. and be televised by ESPN. It will be the 10th meeting between the schools, and all but one have been played at neutral sites.

UCONN OPENERS IN XL CENTER: UConn has won its first game of the season in the XL Center (formerly the Hartford Civic Center), in each of the last 26 years. The last time the Huskies lost their first XL Center game of the season was against Virginia, 72-59, on 12/6/87. Under coach Kevin Ollie, UConn is 2-0 in XL Center season openers, topping New Hampshire, 61-53, in 2012-13, and defeating Yale, 80-62, last year. Under Jim Calhoun, UConn was 24-2 in Hartford openers, the other loss to Purdue, 88-70, on 12/6/86. Before Calhoun, UConn was 7-3 in Hartford Civic Center openers, making UConn’s overall record 33-5 in Hartford season openers.

OVERALL IN HARTFORD: UConn is in its 39th season of competition in the XL Center, formerly the Hartford Civic Center. UConn played its first game in the building against Boston College on Jan. 2, 1976, and has played there every season since, with the exception of 1978-79, when the building was under repair. The Huskies have played 326 contests in Hartford, including regular-season and postseason play, and have a 240-86 record (.736) in those games. The Huskies went 95-65 (.594) against Big East opponents and is 4-0 against American Athletic Conference opponents at the XL Center and is 141-21 (.870) against non-conference foes. UConn, which has had six undefeated seasons in

Hartford, including three in a row from 1993-96, was 7-1 at the XL Center during the 2013-14 season. The Huskies will play seven regular-season games in the XL Center this season.

BULLDOGS AT THE BUZZER: Yale’s Jack Montague canned a three-point shot from the corner with under two seconds to go to give the Bulldogs a 45-44 win at Gampel Pavilion on Dec. 5, Yale’s first win over UConn in 28 years. UConn sophomore Amida Brimah scored 14 points to lead the Huskies, while redshirt sophomore Sam Cassell Jr. added a season-high 12 points. Freshman Daniel Hamilton was UConn’s top rebounder with six.

TEXAS THRILLER: UConn went down to the wire with No. 7 Texas before bowing, 55-54, on a three-pointer from the corner by Texas’ Jonathan Holmes with 2.2 seconds remaining on Nov. 30 at Gampel Pavilion. The Huskies trailed for much of the game, but a stirring run led by senior Ryan Boatright turned a seven-point deficit into a six-point lead wth 6:00 to go. But Texas clawed back and chopped UConn’s lead to 54-52 and called time with possession with 0:04.4 left. The inbounds pass found Holmes, who hit the shot to give the Longhorns the victory. As of the start of the 2014-15 NBA season, nine former UConn players were on NBA rosters, with a few others possibly waiting in the wings. The nine former Huskies are on eight different NBA rosters, and total a combined 60 seasons of NBA experience. The UConn nine are led by Caron Butler (Pistons), in his 13th NBA season. The eight other former Huskies on NBA rosters include Ben Gordon (Magic), in his 11th year, Charlie Villanueva (Mavericks), in his 10th year, Rudy Gay (Kings), in his 9th season, A.J. Price (Pacers), in his 6th year, Kemba Walker (Bobcats), in his 4th NBA season, Jeremy Lamb (Thunder) and Andre Drummond (Pistons), each in his 3rd year, and Shabazz Napier (Heat) in his rookie season. Former Huskies Ray Allen, Emeka Okafor, and Jeff Adrien are free agents who have been mentioned as possible early- or mid-season signees by NBA teams.

PUERTO RICO TIP-OFF: UConn returned from San Juan with a second-place finish in the Puerto Rico Tip-Off, posting wins over College of Charleston and Dayton before bowing to West Virginia in Sunday’s cham-pionship game. It was the 10th straight season in a No-vember tournament for UConn, in which the Huskies have a combined 27-5 (.844) record. UConn has five tournament championships and four runner-up positions in those tour-naments. The five titles came in the 2005 Maui Invitational, the 2006 Hispanic College Fund Classic, the 2008 Paradise Jam, the 2010 Maui Invitational, and last year in the 2013 2K Sports Classic. UConn senior Ryan Boatright was named to the Tip-Off All-Tournament Team after av-eraging 18.7 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 4.3 assists in the three games. UConn rebounded from a sub-par shooting performance in the first half to shoot 63.2 percent in the second half on its way to a 65-57 win over a stubborn College of Charleston team in the first round. Charleston closed to within four points twice in the second half, but UConn’s Ryan Boatright (19 points), Daniel Hamilton (15) and Amida Brimah (14) kept the Huskies in front. In the semifinals, UConn and Dayton battled through seven ties and eight lead changes before the Huskies took charge defensively in the second half for the 75-64 victory. Boatright had 20 points, Rod-ney Purvis had 19 and Hamilton scored 14 to lead the Huskies, while Brimah’s five blocked shots were key. In the championship game, West Virginia harassed UConn into 19 turnovers as the Huskies suffered their first loss of the sea-son, 78-68. The Huskies outrebounded the Mountaineers and closed to within six twice in the second half, but could get no closer. Boatright led the way with 17 points, while Hamilton added 15 points and 9 rebounds.

TOURNAMENT FUTURE: UConn will be in good company as it continues its pattern of participation in outstanding November

tournaments. In November, 2015, the Hus-kies will be playing for the second time in the Battle 4 Atlantis on Paradise Island in the Bahamas. UConn, which finished third in the first-ever Battle 4 Atlantis in 2011, will be joined in 2015 by Syracuse, Michigan, Texas, Gonzaga, Texas A&M, Washington, and Charlotte. In November, 2016, UConn will make its fourth trip to the Maui Invita-tional in Hawaii. The Huskies played in the 2000 Maui Invitational, finishing fifth, then won the event in both 2005 and 2010. In 2016, the Huskies will be part of a field that includes Georgetown, North Carolina, Okla-homa State, Oregon, Tennessee, Wisconsin, and the host team, Chaminade.

GOOD START: UConn won its 15th straight season opener and extended its perfect record to 26-0 in Gampel Pavilion openers with a 66-53 victory over Bryant on Nov. 14. Senior Ryan Boatright led a second-half comeback that saw the Huskies rally from a nine-point deficit in the second half for the win. Boatright scored a game-high 24 points, grabbed 8 rebounds, handed out 5 assists, and had 4 steals in an outstand-ing all-around performance. Sophomore center Amida Brimah added 12 points and 5 blocked shots, while sophomore forward Kentan Facey grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds.

AAC HONORS: UConn senior guard Ryan Boatright was named the American Ath-letic Conference Player of the Week on Nov. 24, following his performance in the Puerto Rico Tip-Off, in which he averaged 18.7 points, 5.3 rebounds, and 4.3 assists in three games. It is the first Player of the Week honor for Boatright, who was named to the league’s weekly Honor Roll on Nov. 17, and again on Dec. 1. The AAC Preseason Player of the Year, Boatright curretly leads the conferece in scoring at 18.3 points per game. UConn freshman Daniel Hamilton was named the league’s Rookie of the Week on Nov. 24 after he averaged 14.7 points, 6.3 rebounds and shot 59.3 percent overall and 66.7 percent from three-point range in

THE AAC PRESEASON LISTS: UConn was picked to finish No. 1 in the conference, UConn senior guard Ryan Boatright was named the Preseason Player of the Year and freshman guard/forward Daniel Hamilton was selected the Preseason Rookie of the Year by a vote of the league’s coaches. NATIONAL RECOGNITION: UConn has produced two of the last four winners of the Bob Cousy Collegiate Point Guard of the Year Award in Kemba Walker in 2011 and Shabazz Napier in 2014. The Huskies are in the running for another in 2015 as senior Ryan Boatright has been named to the watch list of 35 players for the 2015 Cousy Award. SCOUTING COPPIN STATE: The UConn-Coppin State series includes five games, dating back to the 1997-98 season. The Huskies have played all five games at home in Hartford and have won all five, the most recent in November, 2011. Only two players from today’s rosters played in that game --- Coppin State seniors Taariq Cephas and Brandon

This season’s Eagles have struggled to a 1-8 start, defeating only Division II Goldey-Beacom College, in a difficult schedule that has included road games at Oregon, Illinois, Notre Dame, Towson, Denver, and Norfolk State as first-year coach Michael Grant tries to install an aggressive, up-tempo style. Also in the probable starting lineup are junior guard Sterling Smith (7.9 ppg, 4.3 rpg), sophomore guard Christian Kessee (7.0 ppg, 2.3 rpg) and junior center Lawrence Fejokwu (1.7 ppg, 2.8 rpg). The Eagles use a deep rotation, with nine players averaging at least 11.8 minutes per game. Tops off the bench are senior guard Daquan Brickhouse (5.4 ppg), forward Jerimyah Batts (2.9 ppg, 1.1 rpg), and senior guard Jahvari Josiah (6.7 ppg, 2.3 rpg). Coppin State is shooting 36.2 percent as a team, but allowing opponnents to shoot 51.2. The Eagles are minus-12.9 per game in rebounding and are averaging 67.3 points per game, while allowing opponents 89.2 ppg.

RECORD CROWDS: After last season’s Final Four, UConn has now played before three of the four largest crowds in the history of Division I Men’s Basketball. The record of 79,444 fans was set in the 2014 national semifinals at AT&T Stadium in North Texas on April 5, 2014, as the Huskies met Florida. The second-largest crowd of 79,238 came two days later on April 7 as UConn played Kentucky at AT&T Stadium in the national championship game. It took Kevin Ollie just 70 games as a collegiate head basketball coach to join the elite of the profession --- those who have won an NCAA championship.

In just his second season as the head basketball coach at the Uni-versity of Connecticut and only his fourth year in coaching since retir-ing from the NBA, Ollie firmly established himself as one of the rising young coaching stars in the college game by guiding the Huskies to a 32-8 season in 2013-14 and the NCAA title, defeating Kentucky, 60-54, in the tourney’s championship game at AT&T Stadium in Ar-

UConn to their its fourth NCAA crown in the his-tory of the program, Ol-lie marched the Huskies past storied programs Saint Joseph’s, Villanova, Iowa State, Michigan State, and Florida in the tournament before the finale against Kentucky.

It would have been a dream season for any college coach, but for a coach of just 70 games, whose team was not even able to compete in the 2013 NCAA Tourna-ment because of aca-demic shortcomings of years long past, it was truly remarkable. The Huskies, who had a 12-6 mark in the new Ameri-can Athletic Conference, won eight of their last nine games, 11 of their last 13, and had a 10-4 record against ranked opponents, including two wins against Florida, the overall No. 1 seed in the NCAA Tournament.

With a sparkling 52-18 coaching record, Ollie’s .743 winning percent-age is the highest of any coach in UConn history who coached more than 20 games. The 32-victory season is the ninth 30-win season for the Huskies.

Ollie, 41, accepted a huge responsibility on Sept. 13, 2012, when he was named the 18th head coach in the history of UConn men’s basketball, replacing legendary Hall of Fame coach Jim Calhoun.

With only two seasons of coaching experience after joining Cal-houn’s staff as an assistant in 2010-2011, Ollie quickly embraced the opportunity to lead the storied UConn program.

Despite a roster depleted by transfers and early NBA entrants, Ol-lie surprised the experts by guiding the Huskies to a 20-victory season (20-10), a feat no other UConn coach had ever accomplished in his first year.

The Huskies also posted a 10-8 mark in the difficult Big East Con-ference. At season’s end, Ollie’s efforts were recognized by Collegein-sider.com, which selected him to receive its Ben Jobe National Coach

Ollie raised eyebrows with the season’s very first game, upsetting 14th-ranked Michi-gan State, 66-62, in the Armed Forces Clas-sic at the Ramstein Air Base in Germany. The season also included victories over ranked teams Notre Dame and Syracuse, and five wins in overtime, a school record.

Less than a dozen games into his first sea-son as head coach, Ollie was awarded a five-year contract. Following his second season in 2013-14, he spurned interest from several NBA teams to sign another new contract with UConn that runs through May, 2019.

“It’s a humbling experience to be around the UConn fans and the UConn family and to know that I am their basketball coach for the foreseeable future,” Ollie said. “I’m very proud of that. UConn is a place that I love and, as I’ve told everyone throughout the season and through all the recent specula-tion, this is where my heart is. This is where I want to be.”

UConn President Susan Herbst voiced the support Ollie has earned from the university community.

“Kevin has done a remarkable job as our head coach over the past two years and also during his time as a UConn student-athlete and assistant coach,” she said. “He is a per-son of utmost character and leadership and embodies everything we stand for here at the University of Connecticut.”

Ollie’s UConn history --- which began in the fall of 1991 when he reported to school as a freshman from Los Angeles, continued through four successful seasons, including two as a Husky team captain, and resumed when he returned to join Calhoun’s coaching staff following a 13-year NBA career --- has come full circle. He may have only served two seasons as an assistant on Calhoun’s staff, but possesses a wealth of basketball knowledge after learning from some of the finest teachers to ever coach the game, in-cluding Calhoun, Chuck Daly, Don Nelson, Larry Brown, and George Karl.

“After 13 years in the NBA, Kevin’s got a PhD in basketball,” Calhoun said as he passed the torch to his former point guard. “He’s a great basketball man and an even better person. I’m very proud of him.”

The reins to the Huskies could not have been handed to anyone who wanted them more than Ollie.

“This is my dream job. I was made for this job,” Ollie said on the day he was hired. “UConn is a special place and I wouldn’t want to be anywhere else but right here.”

Ollie made that same decision about UConn more than 20 years ago, coming out of Crenshaw High School in Los Angeles. Playing on some of Calhoun’s finest teams during the mid-1990s, Ollie was a four-year starting point guard and a two-time captain.

He played in 124 games for the Huskies, averaging 6.7 points and 5.0 assists. A third team All-Big East pick, his 619 assist total

still ranks third on UConn’s all-time list. He graduated in 1995 with a degree in Commu-nications.

But Ollie was far more concerned with team statistics than individual ones. During his four-year UConn career, the Huskies had a record of 92-33, 51-21 in the Big East Con-ference and made three NCAA Tournament appearances. During Ollie’s last two seasons, when he served as a team captain, UConn’s record was 57-10 overall and a dazzling 32-4 in the Big East, capturing two Big East regu-lar-season championships, and reaching the NCAA Sweet 16 and Elite Eight, respectively.

Yet it was after his UConn career that Ollie was most impressive, displaying un-matched perseverance, intestinal fortitude, and a never-say- die attitude as he fought his way through years in the Continental Bas-ketball Association and the U.S. Basketball League to get his chance in the NBA.

Once there, Ollie would simply not give up his dream, signing a series of 10-day and one-year contracts, dealing with trades and frustrating roster cuts.

Yet Ollie would not be deterred, earning a reputation throughout the league as an out-standing teammate, with strong moral fiber, impeccable character, and a vast knowledge of the game. His perseverance finally paid off with a multi-year contract from the Cleveland Cavaliers. Ollie had been brought to Cleve-land to mentor a young LeBron James about acting as a professional and Oklahoma City brought Ollie in to do the same for Kevin

Durant. During a 13-year NBA career, Ollie played for 11 different franchises in 12 cities and learned from 15 different NBA coaches. It was apparent that Ollie would eventually become a coach.

“Kevin Ollie was a game-changer for us,” Durant, the 2013-14 NBA Most Valuable Play-er, said when asked about the Thunder’s phi-losophy. “He might not say it, but I think he changed the whole culture in Oklahoma City ... just his mind set, professionalism, every single day. We all watched that, and we all wanted to be like that. It rubbed off on Rus-sell (Westbrook), myself, Jeff Green, James Harden. Everybody who comes through now, it’s the standard that you’ve got to live up to as a Thunder player. And that started with Kevin Ollie.”

Ollie couldn’t have had a more successful debut season to his coaching career than in 2010-11, as he helped guard Kemba Walker produce one of the most spectacular indi-vidual seasons in UConn history in leading the Huskies to the program’s third national championship. The 2011-12 season culmi-nated in another NCAA appearance and an-other UConn guard, Jeremy Lamb, drafted as an NBA lottery selection. This past season, Ollie clearly enhanced his reputation as a teacher, molding point guard Shabazz Napier into a consensus first team All-American and the leader of the NCAA national champions.

“Kevin Ollie epitomizes what we want a UConn athlete, a UConn student, to be all about. When you say that about somebody, that’s heavy stuff,” Calhoun said. “Any fox hole you need to jump in, there’s your guy. Anytime you need a person who won’t quit, there’s your guy.”

Born in Dallas on Dec. 27, 1972, and raised in Los Angeles, Ollie resides in Glastonbury with wife Stephanie, who is also a UConn grad (1997), and their two chil-dren, son Jalen (born 6/22/96) and daughter Cheyanne (born 2/6/01).

While at UConn: Has averaged 7.0 points and 1.0 rebounds in his first season with the Huskies this year... Sat out the 2013-14 season as a transfer from North Carolina State. He was able to practice with the Huskies, and he did so until undergoing left shoulder surgery to repair a torn labrum in mid-December.
