ParticipantsThe MBA program is designed for participants seeking acareer change and who are eager to learn more about generalmanagement. Ideally, applicants should be aged 26–30, holda degree in a specific academic discipline, and have profes-sional experience.

Participants with a degree in law, engineering or the naturalsciences will benefit the most from the program. However,participants with a degree in business administration or eco-nomics will find the program highly valuable due to a strongemphasis on integrating theory and practice. MBA Program Design

Globalization, deregulation and technological innovationexpose companies to increased competition pressure. Fastchanging markets force managers to think creatively andstrategically to gain and sustain competitive advantage fortheir companies. Thus, continuously broadening horizons and enhancing skills are the key to making a difference as a manager.

Our ApproachTeamwork is an essential element of our teaching approach.In study groups of four to five, participants discuss currentcourse contents and apply concepts and tools in practicallyoriented projects. Group success critically depends on groupmembers working as a team and not as individuals. Partici-pants therefore learn to function in teams, developing a deepsense of team spirit. By selecting participants from a widevariety of professional backgrounds and nationalities, wemake every effort to ensure a diversity of skills and experi-ences. To achieve the highest team potential, course instructorsprovide regular feedback on team and individual progress.

The program is taught by senior members of the WHU facultyand, in the program’s international module, by the faculty of hosting partner universities. The teaching faculty has anoutstanding research record as well as solid experience in management practice. Lectures by senior executives ofsuccessful international companies complement the programto include the industry perspective on effective internationalmanagement.

Prep CoursesPrep Courses are not part of the official program, instead,they are offered to those candidates who would like to pre-pare themselves before the program starts. Prep Courses inGerman, quantitative methods and a case writing seminarwill be offered in February.

Core and Advanced Core CoursesCore management concepts and tools are provided in thefirst two modules. Basic management concepts and func-tions as well as concepts and tools for economic analysis will be introduced.

SpecializationsWhilst the fundamental strength of the program is generalmanagement, all participants have the chance to deepen theirknowledge of Marketing, Finance, Innovation, Leadership,Strategy or Supply Chain Management within the scope ofthe specialization modules. In the specialization track, youhave the opportunity to choose two concentrations out ofthe six offered. Each concentration consists of four to fivecourses. Alternatively, participants can follow the generalmanagement track and select two courses from each of the six concentrations.

International ModuleDuring the International Module, all participants learn aboutbusiness opportunities and management challenges in theUSA, China and India. You will study at renowned partneruniversities in the respective regions. The program consistsof tailor-made lectures delivered by senior faculty members of our partner universities and company visits.

ThesisThe thesis serves to demonstrate the participant’s ability to work independently on a problem by applying researchmethods. The subject of the thesis will be defined by arrange-ment with the supervising member of the teaching faculty. We encourage our students to do their thesis as part of acompany project.

General ManagementInvestigates important management functions such as purchas-ing, investing, manufacturing, marketing, and accounting. The major goal of this course is to understand success factorsin management.

Managerial EconomicsIntroduces students to the functioning of markets. The courseshows that analysts, directors and senior managers use eco-nomic theory to make decisions consistent with the objectivesof the organization.

Business LawThis course will help you develop an insight into internationalbusiness law and introduces you to the provisions of public aswell as private international business law and internationaldispute resolution.

FinanceDevelops a thorough understanding of financial decision-making and investment in organizations and the capital market.

Financial AccountingProvides a comprehensive introduction to financial accounting,accounting techniques and their impact on financial state-ments. Participants will learn to use accounting for internalmanagement purposes (planning, directing, controlling, etc.)as well as corporate communication purposes (capital markets,banks, rating agencies, etc.).

Economics of StrategyGood management is all about making the right decisions at the right time. It is the General Manager, operating at theexecutive level, who is typically responsible for deciding whatproducts to produce, which markets to go after, and the com-pany’s general philosophy. You will learn about strategicdirection and guidance at all organizational levels by thinkingstrategically and out of the box to see the big picture.

Innovation ManagementGives an overview of fundamental aspects of innovation man-agement such as strategic, organizational and procedural aspects of managing product, process and service innovationin different industrial and competitive environments.

Organizational BehaviorIntroduces you to the fundamentals of managing organizationsat three levels: individual level, team level, organizational level. Using important models and concepts of organizationmanagement science, you will analyze human behavior inorganizational settings as well as organizational processesand systems.

Operations ManagementDeals with production and service operations management.Focuses on process management and control as well as onprocess improvement and management models for industrialexcellence. Shows how to effectively analyze, manage andimprove processes of manufacturing or service operations.

Management AccountingThis class is about management. Accounting only serves asa basis to provide us with the figures we need to discuss andsupport decisions. Rather than obtaining mathematicallycorrect solutions, the course focuses on the behavioral issuesof management accounting.

MarketingTeaches the importance of marketing for a company. Classparticipants will get a sound understanding of the scope ofmarketing decisions and selected marketing concepts, toolsand frameworks.

The World EconomyThis course discusses crucial aspects of doing business on aglobal scale. The focus is on the environment of internationalbusiness, as this is essential to understand the functioning ofthe world economy.

WHU Students Initiatives

To be at WHU means to be part of student life at WHU. Allstudents have an opportunity to shape school policy. Studentrepresentatives have voting rights in the school’s senate, andschool strategies are discussed in teams made up of students,the dean, professors and administration officials.

WHU EuromastersSince 1997, WHU students have organized Euromasters, aninternational athletics festival to which business schools fromall over Europe are invited. Almost 1,000 students competeagainst each other on the first weekend of November everyyear.

Theater GroupEvery semester the WHU theater group stages a play oncampus, and the number of talented actors and actressesgrows continuously.

Application and Admission

AdmissionWe look for a large variety of cultural and professional back-grounds when selecting our students. We are interested in youas an individual, just as you should be interested in the schoolin all its variety.

The MBA admissions committee will base its admittance de-cision on the candidate’s application documents and twopersonal interviews. Candidates will receive a decision inwriting after the completion of the interviews and the sub-mission of all application documents.

The application deadline is February 1 every year. As applica-tions are reviewed and evaluated on a rolling basis and seatsare limited, candidates are encouraged to apply as early aspossible.

Location

A World Cultural Heritage SiteVallendar (where WHU is located) is situated in the heart ofthe famous Rhine Valley, a UNESCO World Heritage Site.There are excellent opportunities for students to explore thebeautiful surroundings of WHU – take a boat trip through the ancient Rhine gorge past castle-topped cliffs, or cyclethrough the Moselle valley, home to some of Germany’s best vineyards. There is a huge selection of outdoor activ-ities available throughout the region.

The big city is not far away. Enjoy a drink in one of Frankfurt’smany applewine taverns, or climb to the top of one of Europe’sbiggest cathedrals in Cologne – both cities are only an houraway by train. Closer to home is the medieval town of Koblenz,just six kilometers from the WHU campus. Koblenz is a studenttown and has an excellent array of bars, shops and restaurants.

HousingAs with many European universities, most students live in private apartments in the local area. The WHU housing depart-ment will help you find suitable and reasonable-priced accom-modation here in Vallendar – apart from campus dormitories,there is a range of shared and single options available.
