Justin spent 13 years as a manager with a consumer

products company working in locations around the world

before he decided to refocus his career. He resigned from

his role, returned to Australia and took a year out to do the

Accelerated MBA. He is now head of supply chain for the

energy business QGC.

‘I thought the MBA was a really good way of using my experience and re-bundling it into another qualification. I think that’s the real proposition of the MBA. It enables people with a lot of industry experience to make sense of that experience and put it in the context of the theory.

‘The MBA has helped me to think holistically. Having done engineering and worked my way through the industry, I had a general idea about most business disciplines, but now I see the bigger picture.

‘Taking time out is expensive but you can complete it in a year. I wasn’t sure what would happen afterwards but, through the MBA, I took advantage of the network opportunities and met someone from QGC. After my first year with the company it turned out that they needed supply chain expertise and that was my background. The next thing I knew, I was running it for them.’

Sally joined NAB as a graduate in 2001, and while working

as a Bank Manager she realised that she was also

interested in the strategic leadership of the business. She

wanted to take her career in a new direction.

Sally saw the MBA as a way to broaden her management

skills and the part-time option allowed her to fit her studies

around her work and personal commitments. Sally is now

working in a strategic HR role.

‘I completed the course over a five-year period – it was very flexible. I was able to complete some subjects over weekends instead of weekday evening classes, which was useful as I was travelling a lot for work at the time. I found the weekend classes had a very different vibe – they were people with more life experience.

‘Studying for a UQ Business School MBA was a completely different experience to doing my undergraduate degree - which was much more theoretical. The MBA was an evolutionary process with practical applications.

‘As well as great teachers and cutting-edge research, the quality of the students was amazing. The other students showed how the theories applied in their real life situations. It was a great collective experience.’

OF 2013...

After graduating as a mechanical

engineer, Emily spent six years

with a global engineering

company where she worked on

major infrastructure and mining

projects throughout Australia.

However, she wanted to use

her project and operations

experience in a consulting

environment to advise

companies on investment

strategy and project delivery.

Emily has since joined Ernst

& Young as a manager in the

Infrastructure Advisory team.

‘In today’s rapidly changing market, it is essential for leaders to adapt and be flexible in the face of ambiguity. The UQ Business School MBA program provided me with the skills I needed to deal with these global issues and leverage the experiential learning that took place through the Wharton GCP and SEEP opportunities.’

Sam joined the army in 2002

and trained as an officer at ADFA

and the Royal Military College

- Duntroon. He completed

operational postings with the

Royal Australian Regiment and

a staff appointment at the 13th

Brigade headquarters in Western

Australia. During his 11 years in

the military, he has led soldiers in

Iraq, Afghanistan and East Timor.

‘The MBA course helped me to turn what I had already learnt from the army into a commercially applicable skillset and developed my financial analysis and management understanding – and all with the support of an extremely strong cohort, many of whom I consider to be lifelong friends.’

During her 22-year career in

the Australian Federal Police,

Stephanie reached the rank

of Detective Commander,

led international teams

investigating online child abuse,

worked in national security,

held a diplomatic post with

the Australian Embassy in

Washington and represented the

country in numerous high-level

forums.

After deciding to change

industry, she wanted to ensure

that she was up-to-date

with contemporary business

practice. She is now a risk and

governance advisor with the

energy business QGC.

‘The MBA has challenged my thinking about business problems. Through participation in the Wharton GCP and numerous SEEP projects, I have gained a greater understanding of the critical demands on businesses including demonstrating effective leadership and corporate responsibility in tightening fiscal environments.’

After starting his career in

accounting and corporate

finance, Tim spent five years as a

professional rugby union player.

He represented the USA national

team for three years and took

part in the 2011 Rugby World

Cup, captaining the team against

the Wallabies.

After retiring from rugby, he

undertook an Accelerated

MBA to help him make best

use of the financial analysis

and interpersonal skills he

had acquired. He has since

been working as a consultant,

exploring opportunities in the

banking industry.

‘The MBA has given me the knowledge and confidence to critically evaluate and solve a diverse range of business issues in different industries.’

WHAT IS AN MBA?

The Master of Business Administration (MBA) is a

masters-level general business degree designed

to equip graduates with sophisticated skills and

knowledge across the business disciplines. It is by

nature and tradition a generalist degree.

If you prefer to pursue a specialist postgraduate degree,

UQ Business School also offers the following postgraduate

business degrees:

 Master of Business

 Master of Commerce

 Master of Project Management

 Master of Property Studies

Master of Technology and Innovation Management

WHO SHOULD DO AN MBA?

Students in the MBA program typically have an undergraduate

degree and several years of work experience before undertaking

the MBA.

They see the MBA as the ideal vehicle to equip them to

move ahead in their careers, confidently establish their own

businesses, or facilitate a transition to a different organisation,

industry or profession.

HOW DO YOU ASSESS THE QUALITY OF MBA COURSES?

There are a variety of independent bodies which provide

accreditation and ratings.

AACSB International is the leading US accrediting body for

business schools, while EQUIS is Europe’s most prestigious

accreditation. UQ Business School was the first in Australia to

earn both of these accreditations.

The GMAA, Australia’s most influential rating body, assesses the

quality of programs each year. The UQ Business School MBA has

been awarded five stars, the highest possible rating, for nine years

in a row. In 2013 it was also awarded five stars for its corporate

links and academic qualifications.

The MBA was also ranked 14th in the world and number one

outside of Europe and North America by The Economist.

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW ABOUT THE MBA

The AFR BOSS Magazine survey of MBA courses is conducted

every two years by the highly-regarded Financial Review Group.

In 2013 it ranked the UQ Business School MBA number one in

Australia.

The survey also questioned alumni and found that over 90 per cent

of UQ Business School alumni considered the MBA to be value for

money, and 95 per cent felt that it prepared them for a wide range

of economic conditions and put them in a better place than their

co-workers, especially in light of the GFC.

It found that MBA students had gone on to improve their skills in the

areas of leadership, teamwork, strategic thinking, problem analysis

and decision making since their graduation.

All MBA programs aim to develop participants’ leadership skills. At UQ Business School, we have developed a unique tool to provide evidence of skills development.

YOUR LEADERSHIP JOURNEY

Your leadership journey starts the minute you enter your first class,

Management Frameworks. In this course, you will use our unique

Leadership Capability Framework to assess your current level of

skill across key leadership dimensions. You will also undertake the

Intelligent Career Card Sort™ exercise - developed by Associate

Professor Polly Parker - as well as using a number of other tools to

help you with self-assessment.

The course is also designed to provide a structured way to identify

the things that really drive you professionally and personally, and

you may be surprised where that thinking process takes you.

By reviewing the changes during the MBA, graduates are able

to structure their ongoing leadership development activities. The

Leadership Capability Framework is also available to graduates of

the program.

The UQ Business School MBA program has a number of key

features that help to set it apart and provide added value to

students.

Page 7: MBA Handbook 2015

LEADERSHIP

UQ Business School provides visible evidence of skills

development using our unique Leadership Capability

Framework developed in-house specifically for the MBA

program.

RELEVANCE

At UQ Business School we believe that teaching, research

and consulting are all crucial in creating a learning

environment that creates the maximum benefit for our

students. Our academics are in demand as consultants to

business, industry and government and are as comfortable in

the contemporary business environment as they are in

the classroom.

UQ Business School is well known nationally and

internationally for its outstanding applied research and strong

links to the business community. Working with industry

ensures that our degrees meet industry needs and our

services add real value to business.

REPUTATION

Ratings and accreditation bodies agree that UQ Business

School is one of the best in the world. We were the first to

gain EQUIS and AACSB accreditation, which represents

a strong vote of confidence by the world’s most influential

accreditation bodies. Our MBA is also considered the top

MBA program in Australia by The Economist and AFR BOSS

magazine.

FLEXIBILITY

We have three different options for the MBA so you can

choose the model that best suits your lifestyle and work

commitments. There are two structured options - the

Accelerated MBA takes just 12 months full-time, while the

Streamlined MBA can be completed in 24 months, alongside

your job.

These structured approaches allow students to develop the

enduring personal and professional relationships that are

so much a part of the appeal of the MBA. We also offer a

Flexible, part-time option that gives you as much time as you

need to complete your MBA - up to a maximum of seven

years.

WHY QUALITY COUNTS

As the number of institutions offering MBAs has grown, employers have learned to discriminate on the basis of quality. So it is reassuring to know that by choosing UQ Business School you will be joining an MBA program that is ranked number 14 in the world and the top MBA program in Australia and the Asia Pacific region.

What’s more, you can be sure that everything you learn on the MBA program will be highly relevant. The combination of quality teaching, consulting and research helps us to stay in tune with the business agenda and to create a vibrant culture that brings out the best in students.

However, the MBA program is not just about classroom learning. We will help you to develop your leadership skills and provide opportunities to put your new knowledge into practice - for example by taking part in an international consultancy project through the Wharton Global Consulting Practicum (GCP), working with community organisations through the Social Economic Engagement Program (SEEP) or travelling to business markets in Asia, Africa and South America as part of the International Immersion program.

As the MBA is just the start of the journey, we also offer networking opportunities to allow you to develop new contacts and extensive careers support to help you on the way.

I look forward to working with you.

Page 8: MBA Handbook 2015

The Wharton Global Consulting Practicum (GCP)

is a once in a lifetime chance for MBA students to

develop their business skills by collaborating with the

world-renowned Wharton School on an international

consultancy project.

The program brings together selected MBA students from both

Wharton and UQ Business School to develop a US market-entry

or expansion strategy for a paying Australasian company, which in

the past have included UNIT, Lorna Jane, OneSteel, GroundProbe

and WAITOC. It culminates in a week-long practicum hosted by

The Wharton School in Philadelphia.

Established in 1881, The Wharton School was the first ever

collegiate business school. It is recognised as one of the top three

in the world and is a member of the prestigious Ivy League. The

Wharton GCP was started in 1978 as a program for Wharton

MBA students and is now offered by leading business schools

in each region of the world. UQ Business School is Wharton’s

exclusive GCP partner in Australasia.

“The Wharton GCP was a unique and rewarding opportunity, enabling us to apply the theoretical models we had learnt in class to a real-life client project. This experience accelerated the development of my business and consulting skills.”

UQ Business School also continues to work on projects with the

Yalari Horizons Leadership Camp. These bring Indigenous high

school students together with celebrities and business leaders

to share success stories and inspire them to aim high. Another

initiative includes the mentoring of first year tertiary students by

the MBA cohort, assisting with their transition from high school to

tertiary study.

Today’s business leaders have to take into account a broader

range of issues than ever before, including their responsibility to

stakeholders and society at large.

Therefore effective business leadership increasingly requires the

ability to exercise leadership in the wider community.

UQ Business School offers MBA students the opportunity

to work with community organisations through the Social

Economic Engagement Program (SEEP), where they can apply

their classroom learning while gaining practical experience. It is

also an opportunity for students to give something back to the

community, and find out about the challenges facing the not-for-

profit sector. Projects have included:

Developing a marketing plan in partnership with the Edmund

Rice Foundation for Timor Coffee, a critical Coffee Microfinance

Program in East Timor

Developing systems to increase YMCA warehouse operational

efficiencies for the Y-Care Breakfast Program, a training

initiative which assists disadvantaged people across

Queensland

Creating a sustainable corporate funding and employee

engagement model for GIVIT, an online charity that matches

people who have goods to donate with charities that need

them

which aims to minimise the negative impact on families when a

DEVELOPING GLOBAL INSIGHT

Students gain a new perspective on international business by

taking part in an MBA Immersion Tour. These optional tours

provide a unique business and cultural experience and will give

you a depth of insight that cannot be matched in the classroom.

You will have the opportunity to:

meet local representatives from industry, government and the

non-for-profit sector

learn about the country’s economy and what is driving growth

understand the political system and its impact on business

appreciate the culture, attitudes and social trends

develop your own networks within the country and identify

study and career opportunities

Delegates on the 2013 inaugural Immersion Tour to India took

part in an industry panel at the High Commission in Delhi, met

businesses from a wide range of sectors, attended lectures at

the Indian School of Business in Hyderabad and worked with a

microfinance charity in the slums.

They rated the tour 7 out of 7 in terms of the overall experience

and found that their perspectives in relation to India and emerging

economies had been transformed as a result of the immersion.

The immersion tour is open to full-time and part-time MBA

students and feature a variety of immersions to different countries

each year. In 2014, two cohorts of students and faculty will visit

China and Vietnam as part of the immersion program, and more

immersions to emerging economies are planned, including India,

Africa, South America and Indonesia.

The immersion program is an extra-curricular offering designed

to broaden students’ global business experience and translate

classroom learning into practice. Students elect to participate in

the immersion and pay an additional fee for participation.

‘India will forever leave an imprint on our minds. The hope and optimism of its people, offered inspiring lessons for us all.’

MOHIT RAO MBA Graduate 2013

‘Immersion allows students to develop a truly global perspective. First-hand experience is more engaging and memorable and provides a depth of insight that cannot be matched in class. Many students have told us that their perspective on the country has altered and that they could better distil some of the theory they studied in the applied context. The immersion program has also helped to strengthen UQ Business School’s international connections and has been beneficial for students to develop their own networks and identify study and career opportunities.’

FLEXIBLE MBA OPTIONS

UQ Business School has designed an MBA program that is

highly flexible while also acknowledging the importance of what

we call the cohort effect. Put simply, the cohort effect is the

extra value that is generated when students can clearly identify

their classmates and share sufficient class and study time

with them to develop the lasting relationships that are such a

valuable part of any MBA experience.

YOU CAN APPROACH STUDY IN 1 OF 3 WAYS

Accelerated program

The accelerated program can be completed in 12 months

and is taught in intensive blocks between early January and

November.

Streamlined program*

The streamlined program can be completed in 24 months

alongside your job and is structured to include some evening

classes, some weekend intensive classes and some one-week

intensive mode offerings.

Flexible program*

If your work/personal commitments are such that you expect

to need more than two years to complete, you can structure

your program to suit your needs by choosing to study in the

evenings, by taking weekend intensive courses or by taking

one-week intensive mode offerings.

* Students in the Streamlined and Flexible programs have the option of

also completing up to two approved courses in the one-week intensive

mode delivered by UQ Business School Executive Education.

WHO YOU’LL MEET

Among the benefits of undertaking an MBA, one of the most

significant is the people you will meet. You will get to know your

peers and build lifelong personal and professional relationships.

You will get to know your lecturers - all of whom are highly

regarded and widely published in their fields of expertise and

who are also sought-after consultants to business, industry,

government and the professions.

You will also meet guest speakers, including business leaders

and our own Industry Fellows and Adjunct Professors. With

students drawn from a wide range of industries, you can

be sure of interesting, informative and diverse classroom

discussion. Because the UQ Business School MBA is only

open to students with meaningful work experience, good

Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT) scores for

overseas students and excellent English, everyone is able to

contribute at a similar level.

ALUMNI SERVICESOne of the most significant benefits of studying at UQ Business

School is getting to know your peers and building lifelong

personal and professional relationships.

With over 35,000 alumni globally, UQ Business School

Alumni Services provides access to a global network offering

opportunities for ongoing learning, development and career

enhancement.

Alumni Services brings together graduates of management,

commerce and business from undergraduate, postgraduate

and research programs and offers a range of services and

development opportunities to alumni. It offers guest lecturing,

mentoring and seminar opportunities and is interested in

hearing about the careers and life experiences of its alumni.

Alumni can also connect to the online communities on

LinkedIn, Facebook, Twitter and YouTube and keep up-to-date

with activities through the alumni e-newsletters.

STUDENT ASSOCIATION

The Business School Postgraduate Association (BSPA) is the

official social and industry network for all postgraduate students

at UQ Business School.

The BSPA organises industry speaker events, professional

development workshops and networking opportunities

throughout the year for the ongoing professional and personal

development of its members. It also provides a point of contact

ACCELERATED

The academic component of the MBA is structured so that a foundation course is followed by five pairs of courses delivered in intensive

6 week teaching blocks and culminates in a residential capstone course.

STREAMLINED & FLEXIBLE

The Streamlined 24 month and Flexible part-time options include

evening classes, some weekend intensive classes and one-week

intensive mode offerings. Program structures vary depending on

semester of commencement.

If you have chosen the Streamlined program, you will need

to study an average of three courses each semester over the

24 months (excluding the winter and summer semesters). We

recommend that you choose a combination of weeknight and

weekend courses each semester, and if you wish to spread out

your workload you may include one or two winter and summer

courses along the way.

The Flexible program will enable you to study as few as one

course per semester. You will have up to seven years from your

semester of commencement to complete the MBA program.

You are able to take any offering of a course that suits your

schedule, e.g. intensive or internal (which means weeknight) or

weekend. All we ask is that you take careful note of the key dates

attached to the different offerings when you enrol via mySI-net, as

not all course offerings are taught in the “normal” semester times.

To avoid any unnecessary academic penalty or financial liability

being applied to your record please review the myAdvisor website

in relation to census dates -

www.uq.edu.au/myadvisor/census-date

All students completing the MBA program should adhere to the

following guidelines for enrolment in:

a. MGTS7801 Management Frameworks in your first year of

study; and

b. ACCT7804 Accounting & Business Analysis and ECON7012

Business Economics BEFORE attempting FINM7805 Financial

Management; and

ACCT7804 Accounting & Business Analysis

Accounting involves compiling and interpreting financial information

about an enterprise and its activities as a basis for making and

evaluating economic decisions about the deployment of resources.

A basic knowledge of accounting is important for anyone

involved in modern enterprises, whether they are profit-oriented,

government, or non-profit entities.

The aim of the course is to provide a broad understanding of the

accounting discipline to enable students to comprehend, evaluate,

interpret, question, and intelligently discuss accounting information;

and understand the uses, limitations, complexities and evolving

nature of accounting.

ECON7012 Business Economics

This course focuses on how consumption, investment, production

and supply chain choices are made in the face of problems of

information and knowledge. These choices need to be coordinated

to avoid wasted opportunities, even more so when individuals,

firms, or entire economies choose to specialise.

Adjustments in relative prices and the incentives provided by profits

and losses play major coordinating roles. Coordination is also

assisted by planning and social institutions. Even so, coordination

failures can still occur, leading to major slumps in employment and

international trade. Economics can help to assess when these

problems are likely and how they may be dealt with.

FINM7805 Financial Management

This course provides students with a range of tools required for

corporate financial decision-making and personal investing. The

course also develops a framework for corporate decision-making

centred on the concept of shareholder value.

Topics include: financial mathematics; short-term financial

management; the use and valuation of debt and equity securities;

project evaluation with an emphasis on the discounted cash flow

techniques of net present value (NPV) and internal rate of return

(IRR); individual investing; portfolio theory and diversification; the

weighted-average cost of capital (WACC); risk; and the capital

asset pricing model (CAPM).

MGTS7801 Management Frameworks

This foundation course introduces students to the MBA and

provides specific areas of foundational knowledge and skills to

build on throughout the degree program. These areas include

frameworks for understanding organisations and leadership, as well

as individual management and leadership abilities.

Building capability begins with a thorough self-assessment, gap

analysis, and subsequent identification of professional goals that

can be achieved throughout, and beyond completion of

the program.

MGTS7802 International Management

International Management provides an understanding of how the

economic, geopolitical and cultural dimensions of the international

business environment shape international business investment

trade and transacting, and how international firms are managed in

this environment.

Strategies for market positioning of very large firms, and small

and medium firms, in these complex environments, and the firm

structures that emerge to support these strategies, are investigated

alongside new and innovative forms of enterprise to capture

international advantage.

MGTS7803 Integrated Strategic Analysis

The final and capstone course, Integrated Strategic Analysis, is

delivered as a one week residential that integrates and extends the

key concepts from the core courses of the MBA program.

This course allows students to analyse, synthesise and present

conclusions and recommendations on a current business case.

MGTS7806 Marketing Management

This course synthesises current perspectives of marketing and

communication theory. Students will be expected to critique

traditional marketing management and communication thinking

within organisations.

This contemporary approach aims to inform management practice

better through a synthesis of the interplay between the disciplines

of communication and marketing. It will prepare students to think

ethically and critically about the communication and relationship

processes that occur in organisations between their internal and

external stakeholders.

MGTS7807 Operations Design

The objective of this course is to develop students’ understanding

of business systems and process design within diverse

organisations and to evaluate how they relate to the organisation’s

corporate objectives, market development, and long-term

sustainability.

Students will gain an understanding of the important theoretical

issues and concepts relating to the design of core business

processes, performance reporting mechanisms and accountability.

MGTS7808 Information Technology for Business Value

How do senior managers use information and communication

technology (ICT) systems and services to enable strategy and get

more business value out of IT? In this course we take the strategic

perspective of the general manager to study how leading firms

leverage their IT investments.

Our focus centres on IT leadership and IT governance rather than

the more ‘technical’ aspects of IT. Therefore an IT background is

not required.

COURSE DESCRIPTIONS

MGTS7809 Strategic Human Resources Management

This course examines the systems and processes involved in human

resource management with the aim of improving organisational

performance. Building on an appreciation of the environment in which

business operates, the course aims to develop a deep understanding

of such HR practices as recruitment, selection and retention of

staff as value adding activities. Strategies aimed at managing staff

performance and developing staff competence, and the professional

and ethical application of HR practice are explored at the individual

and organisational level.

MGTS7810 Leading People & Teams

This course develops the skills and knowledge required to lead people

and teams effectively in modern organisations. The course specifically

focuses on current theory and applied knowledge in this area, starting

from an initial focus on the role of individual variables (personality,

motivations, perceptions, communication skills, emotional intelligence)

and then moving to the nature of teams (team roles, cohesion, norms,

formation, identity issues) and the interplay between individual and

team factors within organisations. The approach taken also provides

opportunities for students to reflect on their own work experiences

and to improve their current practice.

TIMS7811 Innovation Leadership

Innovation has been described as the fundamental source of

competitive advantage. The purpose of this course is to analyse the

importance and nature of innovation and how managers can lead

innovation for sustainable competitive advantage. The course is

based on robust analytical frameworks and contemporary empirical

evidence on international best practice in innovation leadership.

In the event of any conflict arising from information contained in this

publication, the material approved by The University of Queensland

Senate shall prevail.
