“The real benefit of the ManchesterMethod way of learning is thatstudents get to learn about how tohandle complexity and how to handlechanging requirements from clients. When I was talking to a company a fewweeks ago, they said the real benefitof hiring MBA students is the fact thatthey would probably have worked harderon live projects than they ever wouldin a company and therefore they reallyare up and running quickly. ”

Professor Peter NaudeProfessor of Marketing

“We run the entrepreneurship project, where students prepare a feasibilitystudy using either their own businessidea, or one from a client. It runs inconjunction with a principles and practicesmodule, which teaches students aboutthe theory of entrepreneurship, includingsubjects such as venture capital, writingbusiness plans, market potential anddealing with government grants.”

On which MBA can you...enhance your career while having the best time of your life?

16

You apply what you’ve learned in the earlierpart of the programme: you work withcolleagues from different cultures in a pressurisedsituation - ideal preparation for the internationalbusiness environment.

As a reflection of a real working environmentthe project involves extensive primary research, international travel and a high level of projectmanagement and client contact.

The employment benefitsThe International Business Project exposes you to unstructured, multi-dimensionalinternational business problems faced bysenior managers. You’ll boost your CV bygetting involved with new companies and newwork areas. You’ll also have more impressiveexamples to discuss at interview. Recentprojects have included market entry strategies, assessing the viability of commercial informationservices, product support strategies anddetermining locations for new operations.

You will have the opportunity to work withmulti-national organisations as well as smallercompanies, typically with staff at board level.AstraZeneca, American Express, CadburySchweppes, DHL and Roche are among thecompanies that have worked with us recently. Our full-time students are sometimes offeredjobs as a direct result of their performance onthis and other live projects.

The processWith your fellow students, you form a smallmulti-cultural team and consider a list ofproject briefs from a host of client organisations.Your team then competes against other studentgroups to secure one of these projects. Youwill outline to your prospective client how youintend to timetable the project, provide budgetestimates and explain why your team is bestsuited to undertake the work. The client companythen makes the decision about which team toappoint. Along with an academic member ofstaff who acts as your supervisor, you will workclosely with the client organisation - effectivelyas a team of dedicated consultants.

The first client briefing is critical - this is whereyour team absorbs additional informationabout the client’s products, its organisationalstructure and key variables in its industrysector. At this stage, the context, scope andbudgetary constraints are formalised.

Following your initial research an interimpresentation is arranged to assess progress, highlight salient issues and agree on subsequentactions before your team departs for theinternational stage of the project.

At the end of the project you make a finalpresentation to academics and companyrepresentatives and produce a comprehensivefinal report. Typically you’ll have delivered over2,000 hours of intensive work for your client. You’ll often present your work to companyPresidents or CEOs.

Most students say this is the highlight of their MBA. You’ll undertake the projectin the final stage of the programme. It’s your chance to stretch your potentialacross international boundaries, and is the culmination of the Manchester Method.

The Project Sponsor’s viewRobin Davis Instagroup“We wanted to explore the potential for exporting into overseas markets. The group applied a series of criteria to the possible markets. We receivedinformation about competitors and an analysis of the distributionnetworks that might be available to us - valuable information that’sallowed us to avoid an expensive foray into a potentially unsuccessfulforeign market.”

The Project Director’s viewProfessor Sydney HowellDirector of the International Business Project“The International Business Project is the third piece of the spine of live work that students deal with during their MBA. The very first thing that students have to do within their project is actually towin their project from the company. We have a group of companiesoffering a bunch of projects - it’s the company’s choice so the studentsare making competitive presentations. The students have to bidagainst each other, it is real and there are problems you wouldn’tget in the classroom. ”

The Student’s viewOleksiy TsukanovMBA Class of 2007“Our client wanted the group to explore profitable marketopportunities. As part of the project, I went to Denmark and Finland -we’ve collected data and we’ve evaluated market opportunities andresearched whether they’re achievable and profitable. I’ve interviewedapproximately 15 chief executives so I’ve developed a great deal ofconfidence in talking to people of different nationalities. You becomevery good at establishing very clear lines of communication andbuilding a rapport. ”
