PROGRAMME SCHEDULE

Each unit of the programme taught involves extensive in-class discussions and the opportunity in some units to deal with real data derived from recent research and professional practice.

The overall period of study will be completed in just over two years, depending upon the amount of time that you can devote to your final supervised project.

Your weekly workload at any point will largely depend upon the duration of study and the number of assignments studied at any one time.

Tuition is provided on a Friday from 13:00 - 20:00 and Saturday 09:00 - 17:00, on average every three weeks over the course of the academic year.

A variety of teaching methods such as lectures, seminars, independent study, individual or group tutorials, support sessions and the University’s Virtual Learning Environment (Blackboard) will be used across the programme. Additionally all students will become members of the GTA’s Study Centre and have access to quiet study facilities in the heart of St Peter Port, equipped with a reference library, free Wi-Fi and a delegate area.

The range of core modules offered is representative of the various functions and ideas relevant to managing effectively in today’s organisations. By studying this diverse range of subjects, you gain an appreciation of the issues in leadership and management, whilst building confidence and knowledge to address these issues on your return to

organisational environments.

Managing Effectively in the 21st Century The module is designed to set the scene for the MBA. The content of this module provides a context for you to appreciate the complexity and ambiguity inherent in 21st century management. The key issues discussed in this module provide a view from practice and practical experiences of senior managers and academics, enabling you to see how the models, ideas, and constructs discussed throughout the MBA bear relevance to organisational realities in the 21st century. By understanding a range of ideas surrounding this framework, you should be able to appreciate the tensions that organisations face in balancing the needs for agility, innovation, and sound governance.

Strategy The module aims to provide an overview of the relevant theories, tools and techniques in corporate, competitive and international business strategy focusing on strategic analyses, strategy formulation, strategic actions/choices and strategy implementation. You will be required to analyse and think critically as well as apply some of the introduced concepts and tools.

Managing People for Performance

The complex economic, social and technological changes that are continually shaping work in organisations are having a profound impact on how to best to manage and develop the people within them. This module aims to equip you with a key foundation in human resource management and how they can be drawn upon to improve

organisational effectiveness and performance.

Quality & Operations Management

This module provides you with an appreciation of key operations management concepts, and an understanding of the practical application to the analysis and continuous improvement of performance. Contemporary Marketing The focus of this module is on the nature of marketing in the context of today’s rapidly changing business environment, in order to provide you with a broad overview of marketing theory and practice. Its emphasis is on where and how the organisation competes and, in doing this, the module highlights the strategic significance of marketing.

Organisations in Global Context

One of the key success factors of organisations is how they generate knowledge and address issues that are beyond their direct influence and control, but that shape its decisions on strategy, organisation structure, marketing and offering. This module constitutes a multi-disciplinary approach to the analysis of external influences that impact organisations, and will give you an appropriate grounding for developing commercial awareness, which is a necessary pre-requisite of a successful

management career.

Corporate Finance

This module aims to provide students with an understanding of stocks, bonds and derivatives, the main capital raising instruments of our financial markets and to put those products in their modern, global context by examining the role of stakeholders in a variety of different economies. Emphasis will be placed on the use of these techniques in the current financial market environment.

Accounting – Managing & Measuring Performance Accounting based reporting systems provide powerful inputs into corporate decision making processes. The overall aim of this module is to provide an understanding of the processes and assumptions underlying the generation of accounting data and an appreciation of the techniques available to utilise the outputs of an accounting system. These issues will be examined in the context of internal and external decision makers. European Business Context This residential module aims to provide you with an International/European perspective on business management. This module provides you with a core body of knowledge and skills associated with the managerial and strategic challenges faced by organisations that operate internationally taking into account the political and institutional constraints of the European Economic Area. The knowledge and skill gained in this module will enable you to appreciate the complexity of managing within a global environment.

Decision Modelling and Analysis

Information supplied to managers to inform decision-making is increasingly of a quantitative nature. As a result, managers must routinely understand and evaluate quantitative information. The aim of the module is to build confidence in being able to reliably use quantitative methods as a normal part of the work environment, and to focus on the practical application of statistics, mathematics and computing. The module will provide knowledge, understanding and experience of many of the quantitative tools and techniques used for

management decision-making.

The GTA has worked in partnership with the University of Southampton since 2003. This gives students the assurance of a quality partnership and access to the full benefits of university student membership. The GTA offers a wide range of business short courses, technical, professional and postgraduate programmes from its training rooms in the centre of St Peter Port. All local students also have access to the GTA Study Centre based in Le Marchant Street, offering a quiet environment for personal study.
