Bashing theIn the 25 years since it waslaunched, the Variety TrillianBash has travelled some70,000km of New Zealandroads and visited 100,000kids at countless schools andhospitals – as well as thosethe quirky convoy passes asthey wave from roadsidesalong the rural routes ittravels.

It has raised nearly $8million along the way,without counting thenumberless ‘giveaways’carried by its crews. And it’sspawned many touchingstories of kids whose liveshave changed thanks to thework done by Variety – TheChildren’s Charity, and theordinary New Zealanderswho do an extraordinary jobraising the funds that makeit happen.

It’s those stories whichkeep these men and womenworking to raise thedonations required to enterthe Bash, a road rally that’spartly a ‘thank you’ for thatwork, partly a means ofdelivering grants andentertainment to kidsaround the country, andpartly a colourful way to help

get the message across fora charity that grew fromentertainment roots.

This year ended with afunction at MOTAT, and oneof those stories.

When Mark Wilson wasborn with cerebral palsy, hisparents were told he wouldnever walk and talk, but theystarted an intense therapyprogramme that got himmobile, and communicating.

Bullied at school, he tookup competitive sport andrepresented New Zealand atthe Paralympics in athleticsand table tennis.

FLASHBACK to last month when the Kidicorp Variety Bash fire truck visited Te Awamutu’s Kids ToFive on the way to the Bash start.

A Variety Gold HeartScholarship helped make ithappen, and came with amentor, Mark Hellyer, whoalso fund-raises for Varietythrough the Variety TrillianBash.

Mark is now in his thirdyear of a businessmanagement degree, andhe’s a ‘Basher’ himself,raising funds to help others.

“Mark’s story underlineswhat strikes us every year,”says Bash director Murray‘Mojo’ O’Donnell.

“I’m not talking the greatjob done by the fundraising

teams who enter the Bash, oreven the grants made tokids, but the fantastic jobmany parents do when facedwith seeminglyinsurmountable hurdles.And how far a kid can go ifgiven a hand to step up tothe plate.”

“Folk like Mark inspire theVariety Trillian Bash fund-raising crews each year, and2015’s 25th Anniversaryevent added at least$150,000 to the charity’scoffers,” says Mr O’Donnell.

This year’s event began inNew Plymouth on Saturday,

March 7 with the donation ofa specialised trike to 18-year-old Sydnie Maxwell,travelled via Whanganui andOhakune, Waiouru andWellington, Masterton,Napier and Taupo,Tauranga, Cambridge andThames, to finish in Aucklandwith grants for a specialswing for a 12-year-old witha mental age of two, $750 fora dyslexia assessment ateenager’s mother couldn’tafford, $9864 for instrumentsto help AucklandPhilharmonia work with 250disadvantaged children in

Otara, and a Ford SunshineCoach for Keith Park School.

The 30 teams and 180people in the classic convoyhad visited schools on everyweekday to unloadmagicians and entertainers,and to hand over Canonprinters and hats, balloonsand toys, and even toconduct a working bee at aschool on Matakana Island,a ferry ride away fromTauranga.
