The new phase of Brooklyn waterfrontAs the long-neglected piers that used to setback the Brooklyn neighborhoods transform into Brooklyn Bridge Park, we now can feel and touch the water. To celebrate the new phase of Brooklyn waterfront, the threshold to the park was developed by combining the three primary elements around the site - trees, the East River and the Brooklyn Bridge. Leaves are gathered to make the pattern that mimics the water surface of the river. Glass fiber wires that shoot lights at night are used to represent the Brooklyn Bridge. Its S shape invites/lead people in to the exciting things the park offers.

Developing a photographThe park at a corner of a block in mid-town Manhattan was developed from collages of a photograph of a man looking back his own shadow. The park was designed to be somewhere people always see and go through as a shortcut route yet sometimes return to and wonder in - like his shadow. One would shortcut through the park on the wooden path in the morning, eat lunch underneath the trees in the little lawn and go up the stairs after work to feel the evening breeze from the elevated seating space.

A cookie cutterVisual conversations between different activities can be made through the glass-enclosed inner garden placed in the middle of this health club building. It is all about motivating and healing the members - those that are exercising, whether they are swimming, rock-climbing or running on a tread mill, can keep being motivated by looking at other energetic members. The trees changing their appearances and colors through seasons could be some of the members’ reason to keep the memberships. The vertical facade for the swimming pool is not only meant for the prospective members to wonder how it is like to swim in it, but also functions as a backstroke indicator when looked at from inside.

Studio Instructor Professor David Kubik | Sophomore Year 17

In this project, the instructor assigned us to practice four medical centers with different schemes from the same given program requirements - a reception with shelvings for records, 4 doctor’s offices and 20 exam rooms.

•Radial•Cluster

•Grid•Liner

Doctors on PetalsThe radial organization with four anchor points enabled each doctor to have their own section in the building. Starting with the revolving doors then the S-shaped circulation paths create the feel of smoother flow ofqi/energy in hopes of helping the patients’ fast recoveries.

Orange lakeThis medical center with liner organization has the exam rooms oriented toward west for the patients to watchthe sunsetover the lake. The rotating of those roomsalso lets them easily see which room gets openfrom the main lobby.

Protected roomsThe building has a wall that separates and protect the brain part of the facility - the doctors and the records room. The wall also maintains privacy for the sensitive convertsation between a doctor and a patient by keeping the offices away from the rest of the busy spaces. All corridors are made sure to have natural lights and views to the garden/vegitation.

WESTLEY ROZEN SITU STUDIO / SITU FABRICATION 20 JAY STREET SUITE 218 BROOKLYN NY 11201

Re: Studio Intern

Dear Mr. Rozen,

The wide range of your creative practices inspires me. Your deep engagements in digital fabrication especially are extraordinary that they reminded me of the enlightening feeling when I first used Grasshopper with Rhino that broadens the possibilities of design. My interest for digital fabrication started when I went to an exhibition in the MoMA in 2007 and saw your work. One of the installations that caught my eye was your Rule of Six. When I started taking courses and workshops on digital fabrication in the school, I immediately got hooked to the concepts and have been dreamed to be a part of the actual practice field in a firm like yours. I have been also practicing GIS mapping / data visualization after one of my instructors introduced the concept in class with a GIS specialist. Crafting is what I love the most, whether with computer or hand and I would love you to utilize what I can offer. I would be thrilled if you could consider me for the studio internship position in which my practice in school could make a contribution. Should you require any additional information or to schedule an interview, I can be contacted any time of day at your convenience via phone or email listed above.

Sincerely, Mayumi Tomita September 7th, 2012

MethodThe density of trees in each neighborhood, mostly of the street trees, are visualized in two ways - by the size of the tree icon and by the darkness of the green color. For bike routes, the only ‘bike only’ lanes are visualized.

SummaryMapping of tree densities and bike route locations made it apparent that neighborhoods with more bike lanes are more vegetated with trees -- probably due to the fact that when new bike routes are made, the city workers also plant new street trees or replace the existing ones.
