Creative Writing Workshop - Write Your Memoir In this workshop, learn how to write your life story with writer Keith Whelan. When Monday 27 April Time 6.00 - 8.00pm Where Ryde Library Cost $10 Bookings 9952 8352 EVENTS AT YOUR LIBRARY RYDE’s Red Letter Day If you’ve paid a visit to one of our local libraries recently you will no doubt have witnessed the amazing transformation of four giant letters spelling out R-Y-D-E that have slowly been enveloped with thousands of handmade red poppies and tributes in honour of the 2,000 men and women from this area who went to World War I. Since November last year, individuals and groups have been busy knitting, crocheting, felting and stitching the 2,000 poppies in preparation for the Ryde Remembers Centenary of Anzac commemoration. This grand community effort will culminate in a special Anzac Tribute Service and Morning Tea on Friday 24 April at the Ryde Park Cenotaph starting at 9.30am. Community members who have contributed, local schools, returned services and civic leaders will be in attendance – it should be a memorable and moving community tribute. I look forward to seeing you there. Improving public amenity Council work crews have taken advantage of the good weather over past months to complete an impressive list of maintenance and upgrades to a number of parks, playgrounds and community facilities throughout our city. Last week I visited two recently completed works. The first was the new playground at Memorial Park in Meadowbank that has doubled in size thanks to a $278,000 Council upgrade. This is a lovely park overlooking Parramatta River with a natural/organic setting that has always been a popular spot for local families with children as well as morning joggers, picnickers, bird watchers and nature lovers. The new playground has the latest play equipment with swings, climbing net, sand pit, high bridge and tunnel slide as well as an insect-themed play obstacle course to encourage adventurous play. For the mums and dads, new electric BBQs, taps, seating and good access pathways all take advantage of the views, and the impressive canopy of large eucalypts make for a very enjoyable setting. The Banjo Paterson Wharf in Gladesville also has a new lease of life from a $193,000 upgrade. The refurbishment includes the replacement of timber decking, girders, handrails and other components. This public wharf is a popular spot for wedding photos, not to mention fishers, boaties and anyone using the nearby parks and Ryde River Walk. Other recently completed works include upgrades to Eleoura Reserve in Macquarie Park, Granny Smith Park at Eastwood and the ELS Hall Park Amenities Building – all designed by our Open Space designers. Upgrades at Lions Park and Gannan Park are due for completion by the end of April, while Irene Park, Carara Reserve and Girraween Reserve are on track for completion by the end of June. A lot of behind the scenes planning goes into the finished product, starting with the research and concept designs, community consultations, budgetary considerations, work crew rosters and maintenance schedules. In the end, it is very satisfying to know that the upgrades will extend the life of these well-utilised public facilities for future generations.
