What is BRAC?

Base Realignment and Closure, or, BRAC is a process of the United States Government directed at the administration and operation of the Armed Forces.

BRAC is used to close excess military installations and realign the total asset inventory in order to save money on operations and maintenance.

BRAC rounds occur periodically. The latest round was in 2005.

How did Maryland Benefit from the 2005 BRAC Commission Recommendations?

Maryland was the single largest winner of the 2005 BRAC round, gaining a net realignment of 9,293 DoD jobs.

The two bases slated to receive the largest number of DoD jobs from BRAC are Fort Meade and Aberdeen Proving Ground.

Since the 2005 recommendations, the estimated numbers of jobs directly and indirectly related to BRAC has climbed. The latest estimates indicate that BRAC could generate as many as 60,000 jobs in Maryland from now to 2018.
