LOCAL EARTHQUAKE “BEACONS” The Portland Bureau of Emergency Management (PBEM) is establishing 48 Basic Earthquake Emergency Communication Node (BEECN) sites throughout the city (see map on reverse side for current locations). PBEM’s goal: within 24 hours aſter a major earthquake, a pre-designated city employee or volunteer will set up low-tech radio equipment under a clearly marked red and white tent. In a communications blackout — once your home is stable and secure — you can go to a BEECN site to report severe damage and injuries. BEECN workers can also help you access resources such as water, shelter or first-aid. During this time, OPB radio 91.5 FM may broadcast official emergency messages directly from the City of Portland. Aſter familiarizing yourself with your nearest BEECN site, make sure you have a good emergency plan. That includes: a home preparedness kit; signing-up for real-time alerts at www.publicalerts.org; and making sure your house is bolted to its foundation for seismic bracing. All Portlanders are invited to join a volunteer Neighborhood Emergency Team (NET). NET members receive free basic training in first-aid and rescue skills. LOCAL EARTHQUAKE “BEACONS”The Portland Bureau of Emergency Management (PBEM) is establishing 48 Basic Earthquake Emergency Communication Node (BEECN) sites throughout the city (see map on reverse side for current locations). BEECN workers can also help you access resources such as water, shelter or first-aid. DISCLAIMER: Please do not attempt to go to a Basic Earthquake Emergency Communication Node if you feel that doing so would put you in danger. These sites will not have supplies or provisions imme-diately following an earthquake or other citywide disaster. The pri-mary role of these sites is communication and information sharing: between neighborhoods, agencies and the City’s Emergency Coor-dination Center. It may take up to 24 hours, or longer, for these sites to become operational. Locations may change over time, or need to relocate, if the pre-designated site is not safe.
