MORSHEAD, H.T. Headstone unidentified

Lt. Col. Henry Treise Morshead, DSO, RE, FRGS, Indian Army. Joined the Survey of India on 3 December 1906. Director, Burma Circle, Survey of India, with headquarters in

Maymyo, from 14 May 1929.The woods surrounding the hill station of Maymyo were particularly attractive to residents

and holiday makers with ponies. The facilities for riding were all the more pleasant because of numerous avenues, or Rides, cut and maintained by the Forest Department.

The Department was responsible for the conservation of the woods and the protection of the game therein.

On 17th May 1931 the Subdivisional Officer, Maymyo, was informed that a riderless horse, with signs of blood on it, had come into the town from the woods. A search was

organised which went on all day without result. It was not until next morning that Colonel Morshead's body was found on one of the rides. He had been shot twice.

Despite intensive enquiries no assailant could be found. Neither proof nor motive could be established, though one theory was that the Colonel had disturbed an armed poacher.

He was buried on 18th May 1931, aged 48.

MacCOLL, E.G. Headstone unidentified

Eric Gordon MacColl was born on 17th April 1892 and lived for most of his life in Maymyo. He was an artist well known throughout Burma particularly for his engravings

of scenes of Burma and portraits of men and women of the various peoples in their traditional costumes. He also decorated scarves, lamp shades, wall plaques and other bric-a-brac. His living conditions left a lot to be desired, his artistic nature being oblivious to

creature comforts.During the 1939-45 war he was interned by the Japanese. According to a report, while under arrest on suspicion of spying, he kicked a Japanese officer who shot at him twice

with his revolver, but fortunately the gun mis-fired.He died on 11 August 1973, in poor circumstances, in a dilapidated hut littered with his

artistic works. His friends saw to it that he was given a dignified funeral.
