Summer Activities: The pool opens Memorial Day weekend Saturday May 28th 2016. Pool is opened Monday to Friday 11am to 6pm, Saturday 10am to 8pm, Sunday l0am to 6pm. Please read the pool rules in the newsletter. Badges must be shown to the lifeguard.

Bocce starts mid May and is played till the last week of July. Bocce is played on Tuesday & Wednesday from 9am to 11am. Please come and have fun.

The tennis court will be refurbished this spring with new net and posts. Invite family and friends to use the new court.

Election: Our annual election is June 23, 2016. Election information will be mailed to homeowners.

Spring Clean Up: BDL has cleared lawns, entrance, islands & club house in preparation for cutting of lawns. The rosebushes on the islands have all been trimmed and have many buds. The first lawn application was done end of March & BDL will monitor the lawns. Mulch has been applied to the flower beds at the entrance, islands and club house. BDL inspected the irrigation system in early April and will address any issues.

Welcome back to our friends and neighbors who are returning from the warmer climates. Hope you enjoyed the winter and are all in good health. I hope everyone enjoys the flowers that have sprouted at the various areas planted by the Garden Club. The pool will be opened on May 28th and once again we can enjoy socializing with our neighbors.

As you all know May 21st is Armed Forces Day. It was first observed on May 20, 1950 to honor Americans serving in the military branches. Thank you to all those men and women presently serving and to those to have served our country so that we can enjoy the freedom that this country offers us.

On Memorial Day, the flag of the United States is raised briskly to the top of the staff and then solemnly lowered to the half-staff position, where it remains only until noon. It is then raised to full-staff for the remainder of the day. The half-staff position remembers the men and women who gave their lives in service of their country. At noon, their memory is raised by the living, who resolve not to let their sacrifice be in vain, but to rise up in their stead and continue the fight for liberty and justice for all.

MARK YOUR CALENDARA trip to Stoney Hill Inn, Hackensack, New Jersey is being planned for November 30, 2016. The show is “Home for the Holidays.” The cost will be $88.00 which will include a family style lunch with two drinks. We will have collection at the June’s women’s club meeting. If interested, please sign the sheet on the bulletin board in the club house. This has to be done early because their shows are filling up very quickly. We have already lost two opportunities because we didn’t sign up early.

A great big thank you to all who supported the Women’s Club St. Patrick’s Day dinner dance for charity. We were able to donate $732 to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital. Looking back at that night, everyone seemed to have had a fun night. Hope we can do something again next year!

The last two months, the women enjoyed a variety of activities at our meetings. March was filled with Irish music and bagpipers. Jane Collins brought a few of her friends who entertained us with the bagpipes. It was also educational as well, as they shared some facts about the bagpipes and how they were played. We also sang some Irish songs with the help of Elsie Ayala’s brother-in-law, Steve Pizzella, who is a member of a band and also a “DJ.” He was very entertaining.

At our April meeting, many women participated in a “Crazy Hat Day.” They wore hats as simple as baseball caps to creatively decorated hats and bonnets.

The highlight of the afternoon was a food demonstration by Joe Leone. He prepared two different ways to cook eggplant. Members were able to taste each one. Delicious Joe, thank you!!

Our next event is a luncheon to be held on Tuesday, May 10th at Spring Lake Manor. Please call Barbara Dattoli at 732-892-7224 for information.

Our membership is 120 women. We encourage you to think about joining your neighbors and have the opportunity to meet new people and have some fun each month as well. JOIN US FOR BRIDGEOur Bridge Group is looking for new members. A working knowledge of bridge is necessary, but a good sense of humor and a chance to meet new friends is a help, too! We have two to three tables and play every Tuesday, except for the second Tuesday of every month due to the Women’s Club meeting, from 1:00 p.m. until about 4:00 p.m., four hands, then we switch. It’s time to say hello and goodbye. Goodbye to the beautiful bulbs that herald spring, and hello to the short-lived, but glorious annuals that will give us spectacular color all summer.

As the spring bulbs die off, don’t cut off the unsightly foliage. As the foliage dies, it nourishes the bulb for the next bloom. If you like a tidier garden, simply gather the foliage in your hand, bend it over into a bundle and tie with a twist tie or twine. Another tip is to plant your bulbs in pots, sink the pots in the fall, and remove the pot after the bloom. Put the pot out of sight while the foliage dies off. You will also have a convenient hole ready to put some annuals in for new color.

Now on to the annuals: The most important thing to know is where to plant them. Sun, shade, part-shade? Many gardeners (especially beginners) overlook how critical this is. When flowers fail, they give up and declare they don’t have a “green thumb.” Choose the right flower for the right place, water according to directions and you will be successful with your plantings.

Garden Club activities: The bocce pots around the court will again be planted, and the benches throughout PC will also sport some new plants. Work at the corner of Spring Hill and Brushy Neck will continue, and keep your eye out for some wildflowers in the future.

I’m sure we are all looking forward to spring and the good outdoor weather. Time to dust off the golf clubs, tennis racquets and get out the gardening gloves.

Our second luncheon meeting was held in March with a selection of hot and cold subs followed by dessert and coffee. The members enjoyed these meetings and voted to continue them during the winter months next year.

Our annual 8 ball pool tournament took place in March. The winners were: Don von Ohlen – first place, Torry Pedersen – second place and Bob Collins in third place. All three received gift certificates to the Tuscany restaurant. Many thanks to John Fey who organized and ran the lengthy tournament.

John Domzalski announced that he is reinstating the tribute to our war veterans in the Newsletter (both men and women).

It was good to see Bob Hishon return to our meetings. He announced that he will be running the bocce games again but needs some help in preparing the courts each day. Bob Weeden volunteered to pitch in.

MEN’S CLUB NEWSAnnette Amoresano, Women’s Club President, asked if we would poll our members to determine if there would be any interest in an informal New Year’s Eve party. About one third of our members in attendance said yes.

In April, we had an interesting and excellent guest speaker. Jeff Thompson, a coin hobbyist and investor spoke on the value of collecting gold and silver coins as a hobby and as well as investments and hedges against inflation. He brought an interesting display board of various coins and commented on their origin and value. His talk included a suggestion that coins would be great gifts for grandchildren and a way to start them on the road to collecting. He met with several of our members after the meeting to inform them of the condition and value of the coins they brought with them.

We are planning the events that are coming up soon.

• The Pancake Breakfast will be on May 28th at the Clubhouse.

• July 4th Independence Day Pool Party.

• Blue Claws Baseball game on Tuesday August 16.

Due to a lack of interest, I have returned to the theatre the tickets I had been holding for a group performance of THE 25th ANNUAL PUTNAM COUNTY SPELLING BEE musical on Sunday afternoon, May 15th.
