Textbook vs Flight Test We’ve all read about various aerodynamic phenomena, such as graveyard spirals, angle of attack, phugoids and such. But suppose your airplane had flight data recording capability and you went out and explored those phenomena? Would the books describe your airplane’s handling? In the case of my RV-9A, the answer is no, not really. Sometimes the book description was an over- simplification, sometimes it was flat out wrong. And some phenomena were discovered that aren’t in the books, and aren’t even taught in test pilot school! Obviously my airplane never read the books… This presentation will discuss eight aerodynamic phenomena and will therefore be a bit long, over an hour. However, nobody has to drive home afterwards. The presentation was to have been given at Sun ’n’ Fun, but as we all know, this year’s event was cancelled. However, the airshow funds their very impressive aviation high school, to the tune of about two million dollars per year. If you were planning to go, figure out how much you would have spent on the show and send them a check for a chunk of that — they’re a deserving outfit. They’ll also have a virtual air show on Saturday, May 30th, on the web but details aren’t set yet.

Builders NotesFrom William Leftwich

I’ve been sequestered in my home workshop for thelast month working on my 7/8 scale Nieuport 11project. I’ve got all the fabric covering done on thewings and fuselage and tomorrow I’ll be applying thepinked tapes to the fuselage with Poly Brush.Fortunately, the weather is just right to do thisbecause I can open up the shop and let the fumesout. After the all the tapes are on, I will give it thefinal coat of Poly Spray and then I can assembleeverything in the shop before I take it to HodgesAirpark.

We Don’t Gamble, We Need A Sure Thing: AirVenture 2020 is officially canceled

My fellow EAA’rs. It is May here in Wisconsin, and unfortunately like many of you across the country, we are stillunder a stay at home order through May 26.Normally, this is the month when we start our preflight planning for EAAAirVenture Oshkosh. By this time, we should have begun ramping up our entire site in preparation for our Julyconvention. Volunteers from across the country and world would have descended on Oshkosh. Together they wouldhave formed work parties, our suppliers would begin start setting up tents and infrastructure. Our EAA staff would beprinting wrist bands, campers guides, programs and an assortment of EAA collateral as full-on AirVenture executionbegins.

But because of circumstances beyond our control, none of this can happen now. We cannot even get to the hangarso our preflight is left to watching the prog charts. While this certainly makes the ability to prepare for the event ascheduling problem, it does not preclude the bigger issue of predicting what will be the health guidelines in July. Rightnow, there are three phases that have been defined in Wisconsin as the recommended procedures. As I write this,we are not in Phase 1 yet. Phase 2 restricts gatherings to 50 people. Phase 3 allows for mass gathering withrestrictions.

Our convention attracts EAA members not only from the U.S. but around the world. Today we cannot predict whenwe will be at a point that our event meets the all clear Phase 3 milestone for mass gathering with restrictions. As yourleader, I see no clear path to meet our own requirements to insure the health and safety expectations ourorganization demands for our employees, members, volunteers, exhibitors and attendees. That includes sanitization, separation and personal protection requirements.

My conclusion is, like in any good flight planning, don’t take the risk. Therefore, I have no choice but to cancelAirVenture 2020. Together, we can come back stronger, safer and ready for AirVenture 2021 and create amemorable world class aviation event. Because of our dedicated and enthusiastic EAA members, our Association isstrong. We know that at some point this storm will pass. And over the next 12 months we will continue to support allof you as we again, together, grow EAA in the Spirit of Aviation.

Respectfully,

Jack J. PeltonExperimental Aircraft AssociationCEO and Chairman of the Board
