Dear Mayfield staff and parents, It is with a great deal of regret along with a massive amount of excitement that I announce that I will be taking extended leave before retiring from my wonderful school. I am fine although I have some medical issues to address that are not life-threatening. After 16 years in this wonderful school I have decided it is time to transition to retirement. From the Acting Principal’s Desk

I want to thank the parent community for their support and patience in this unprecedented time. I have taken a co-ordinated approach working with the department and staff here at Mayfield to make

decisions in the best interest of our students.

I will endeavour to keep you up-to-date with any decision made at school and information or directives that we are being provided by the department. Please be rest assured that the staff and I

are continually working on and updating our contingency plans if the current situation changes. Please make sure you

have read my email updating you on events at school this term.

I attended the P&C meeting last Monday night which was a great introduction to Mayfield State School and all of the wonderful things that happen. What a great group of parents working to make Mayfield a great place with the OSHC, Oasis Café, The Marlins Swim Club and Cinema in the Suburbs. You’re lucky to have all of these associated with the

P&C.

In my first weeks here I have taken the time to walk around to all the classrooms and see learning in action. I’ve also had a great time chatting with children at playtime and getting their perspective of what they think is great about

Mayfield SS.

FAREWELL

As you may have read in emails from Mr Lange and Mrs Jones, they have both come to a point in their career where they are ready to move onto other things in their life. It is very sad to say good bye to two leaders who have been such a big part of Mayfield State School for so long. I wish them all the best and thank them for all the work they have done and time they have given to ensure the teaching and learning is of a high standard. Thank you to Mr Lange for being available when he was on leave with the many questions that inevitably come up when taking over a new position. Thank you to Lesley who has been a wealth of knowledge in my transition to Mayfield. She has been amazingly

supportive to me in ensuring the running of the school continues at a high level during this period.

Staffing in schools is determined by Education Queensland based on student numbers. Schools get some scope in decision making on how the staffing structures look once this is confirmed based on Day 13 numbers at the start of the year. Mayfield’s current numbers doesn’t allow for a departmental funded deputy principal position. The school had budgeted for this position at a significant expense for a school this size. While Mrs Jones is taking extended leave, the DP position will not be replaced. In terms of the Leadership structure for Term 2 and beyond, we have begun the process of putting out an expression of interest to staff for additional days in what will be a Students With Additional

Needs (SWAN) leader

This will support the change in structure in leadership positions and boost support in classrooms. I have begun meetings with Kate Miles, who will stay as our Head of Curriculum, to determine roles and responsibilities to reflect the

changes in roles. This is still in the process and I will update the community when this process is finalised.

NAPLAN Online

Last week, all Australian Education Ministers agreed that NAPLAN will not proceed this year. This decision was made in recognition of the disruption being created by COVID-19 to school routines and to enable teachers to continue their focus on student learning and wellbeing. NAPLAN Online practice tests that were to occur next week will no longer

proceed.

THANK YOU

I want to say thank you to all the teaching and non-teaching staff here at Mayfield SS for all the dedication and extra work that has been done to make places and adjustments for uncertain times coming up. Classrooms have continued their learning while still maintaining a high level of hygiene and cleanliness. It’s important for me to have the children of Mayfield SS maintaining familiar routines and continue their learning. We have worked hard here to ensure this is still happening until we are directed otherwise. I enjoyed visiting the strings rehearsal on Tuesday morning who sounded

great but also observed social distancing.

GREAT LEARNING FOR HARMONY DAY

What a wonderful day it was Friday last week where classes celebrated Harmony Day. Albeit a modified celebration to how we would normally celebrate. The message of ‘Everyone Belongs’ was evident in activities across the classes. Messages of kindness, acceptance and belonging was great to see. I particularly loved Prep G’s pledge – ‘We pledge

to not use our HANDS or WORDS for hurting others, only for helping’.

Changes to school events:

I am writing to further update you on changes we have implemented at the local level to assist in reducing the risk regarding COVID-19. While it is important that we maintain regular routines and programs where possible, we also need to cancel or modify several events in order to prioritise the health of our community. Please take the time to read

through the below information carefully.

The decision has been made to cancel/postpone the following events:

Parades (until the end of term)

Awards associated with parade will be presented in class. We will attempt to catch up on class presentations that

would normally be happening at these parades.

Cross Country – 30th March

Both carnivals will be postponed until a later date.

Parent Teacher Interviews – 31st March

On the advice of the department, face to face meetings should only be occurring if necessary. Therefore, interviews will be postponed to a later date. If you have any burning questions before the end of the term you can email your

teacher.

Easter Bonnet Parade – 3rd April

We have decided that this is an important event at Mayfield State School and will alter how this is run. Like Harmony Day we will get the students to display their creations in their class groups (or block group classes at the maximum).

We will also run this as a non-spectator event this year.

Running Club – Mondays and Fridays Will be cancelled until end of term.

To help stop the spread of germs, please follow this advice and encourage your children to wash their hands

regularly, especially before and after eating, and after going to the toilet.

In addition to this advice, please follow the following advice and encourage your children to:

use alcohol-based hand sanitiser if soap is unavailable

cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue or the inside of your elbow

dispose of tissues in the bin immediately

if you are, or your child is, unwell stay at home and avoid contact with others through touching, kissing or

hugging.

I thank you for your patience and understanding. I appreciate your support as we work together in this situation.

THANK YOU & HAPPY EASTER BREAK

I want to say thank you to the parent community for all of your positive messages and emails as we navigate our way through this uncertain time. It is reassuring to have your understanding and patience as the staff at Mayfield work together ensuring that as little disruption as possible occurs for your child’s education. It has been a tricky time balancing the health and wellbeing of our students, parents and staff while continuing the operations of the

school. It has been great to witness our staff working together and supporting each other over the last fortnight.

I wish everyone a safe and relaxing break. Particularly in these unprecedented times. Please remember all the safety messages given by the government and health officials and stay up to date over the break. What a great

opportunity to spend quality family time – I know I will be dusting off the board games!

SOME THOUGHTS…

In my work over the last 3 years with a neuroscience coach I’ve really become interested in the concept of brain plasticity and mindsets to shift thinking. The image here has some great concepts for growth mindset but also reminders to get curious – behaviour is just communication. It’s trying to understand what is being communicated that’s the most

important thing.

Have a great fortnight and stay safe.

Yours in education,

Andrew Male

Acting Principal

Pedagogical Coach/Head of Curriculum

As you have already read, this term Mayfield State School is saying goodbye to Doug Lange and

Lesley Jones, who are both retiring after lengthy careers with Education Queensland. Our school will dearly miss both Doug and Lesley. They fostered a culture of community in which all of us, whether teacher or groundsman, prep

student or parent, felt included and valued.

I first met Lesley when I started at Mayfield on return from maternity leave. I was worried about returning to teaching while at the same time nervous about missing my daughter’s first day of Prep. Lesley reassured me, and told me that I shouldn’t miss such an important moment in my child’s life. I knew then that I would be working in a school that would

value me and my family, not just the work that I do.

Over the last decade, I have worked alongside these two both as a classroom teacher and Head of Curriculum. I saw first hand the wealth of experience, knowledge and care that they brought to Mayfield. I have learned so much from the both of them and they have encouraged me to develop my capacity and confidence as a leader. I am proud to have had Doug and Lesley as mentors and friends, and they are already sorely missed. On behalf of the staff of

Mayfield State School, I would like to wish them the happy and lengthy retirement they deserve.

Kate Miles

To the wonderful Mayfield community.

As I write this today I am feeling conflicting emotions. I am happy and excited but at the same

time deeply sad, because late last week, I made the very difficult decision to finish my career and

move on to the next stage of my life.

I first came to Mayfield in 2010 and I can honestly say that it has been the best and happiest work place that I have

ever had the honour of working in.

For the past 10 years I have had the immense pleasure of working with the amazing Doug Lange, sharing the

responsibility of leading this terrific little school. Along the way there have been other members of our leadership

team including Nicole Collins, Lisa Dennis and for the last few years, Kate Miles. All of these people have been a

joy and an inspiration to work with and last week, it was my pleasure to welcome Andrew Male into the fold. I

understand that I am leaving at a time when there is much uncertainty but watching Andrew take the helm, I

became absolutely confident that, together with Kate Miles and the rest of the team, Mayfield is in good hands and

you can share that same confidence. I would not be going right now if it wasn’t!

The Mayfield staff, parents and children are and will always remain special to me. I am sure that in the coming

days, weeks, and months I will find myself missing this place. Down the track when life returns to normal for

everyone, I will come back to say a more personal farewell at a school assembly.

Fond regards

Lesley

comes up, we will contact you to see if we can use that credit on his/her account for the invoice. You can do this via

BPoint too as long as you have your CRN and students name. In the invoice section, put CBS (Credit Balance-

The school provides resources to cover the basics and each year parents are invited to make a Voluntary Financial

Contribution to enhance this educational service. This amount is $60 per student. Thank you to those families that

have paid their contribution.

Dear Families, We understand that there is a little confusion between Qparents & QSchools. .

QParents is an online portal that is free for Queensland state schools to

use, and allows parents at your school to:

view attendance details, report cards, invoices and a history of payments,

provide reasons for unexplained absences and to notify the school of future absences

view and pay school invoices online

update student details including residential and postal address as well as medical conditions.

Please see our webpage for more information. (https://mayfieldss.eq.edu.au/support-and-resources/qschools-and-qparents) We will be resending the QParents invitation codes to all families who do not have an active QParents account. Keep a look out for this important email. Please note the invitation is only sent to one parent/ guardian, normally the parent that receives the school invoices. Once the QParents account has been created the account owner is then able to invite the other parent/ guardian.

QSchools. The QSchools app is a convenient way to receive up-to-the-minute information from Queensland state schools. This app is downloadable across these platforms , iPhone/

iPad Android Windows PC

The QSchools app integrates with our Mayfield State School website, allowing users to:

find and favourite your school by searching for the school by name, searching a map or by searching for

schools near your current location.

receive real-time notifications about statewide emergency alerts as well as school push notifications and

important updates through the app

access the latest news, events and newsletters from your school

easily access your schools tuckshop and uniform shop information

The app can manage updates from multiple schools which is useful for parents who have students in different

schools.

Push notifications

Push notifications will allows Mayfield SS to push essential information directly to your device, including notifications of

upcoming events and emergency alerts and important updates.

To receive push notifications, download the QSchools mobile app or ensure the app is up to date if you already have it.
