The Crusader SEPT.-OCT. 2018 MAYER LUTHERAN HIGH SCHOOL 305 FIFTH STREET NE MAYER, MN 55360 952-657-2251 www.mayerlutheran.org Dear Friends of Mayer Lutheran High School, Autumn greetings to you in the name of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ! Sports are a big part of most high schools. They certainly are at Mayer Lutheran. Ask any graduate to share a favorite memory or two about their years in high school and they will, undoubtedly, share something that relates to sports. Attending games is a great community builder and the Lord has blessed our school with outstanding coaches, faithful parents, and dedicated multi-sport athletes that typically draw big crowds for contests home and away. Win or lose, there is no doubt our school community loves our teams! In high school sports, winning and losing takes on a new perspective. Unlike professional sports with their win-at-all-cost attitude tied in with billions of dollars of potential revenue, high school sports are different. We do not refer to our sports teams as “extra-curricular” as if they have nothing to do with what we teach our kids in the classroom. Instead, we use the moniker “co-curricular” to reflect our firm belief that sports accentuate and affirm the learning that occurs during the regular school day. The classroom and the athletic field are like a one-two punch in helping us achieve our mission of preparing the next generation of Christian leaders. The very public nature of a game creates an intense crucible of leadership for our kids, coaches, and fans to share with the world to Whom we belong. Sometimes we rise to the occasion. Sometimes we do not. The only thing worse than losing is winning without humility, class, fairness, or decency. The blessing of a Christian high school like Mayer Lutheran is that, unlike most other schools, when we succeed in a contest, we know to Whom the credit really belongs. And, when we fail to live up to the lofty expectations God’s Word places on Christian schools, we know to Whom we can turn for forgiveness and renewal. The Apostle Paul, a big sports fan in his own right, shares a key element that guides our athletic program at Mayer Lutheran: Every athlete exercises self-control in all things. They do it to receive a perishable wreath, but we an imperishable. So I do not run aimlessly; I do not box as one beating the air. But I discipline my body and keep it under control, lest after preaching to others I myself should be disqualified. (1 Cor. 9:25-27) What separates Mayer Lutheran from everyone one else is that we know all about the “imperishable wreath.” The world is well aware of the fleeting, perishable rewards of fame and fortune. At Mayer Lutheran, we intentionally confess, teach, and preach the eternal blessing of abundant life in Jesus. He went to the cross in our place and won salvation for us that we could not win for ourselves. He was victorious over death and the grave. By the power of the Holy Spirit, we claim His victory as ours, with no fear of being disqualified. When it comes to our eternity with Christ, winning isn’t everything, it is the only thing! ChangesBy Tim Masters | [email protected] | 952-657-2251 x1107

One of the great things about teaching is the amount of change we see from year to year. The makeup of the students in each class changes, world events change, new history is made, student concerns about the world change. What makes all this enjoyable is that it allows us to work on ways to adapt how we teach to try and engage students. We aren’t always successful but we are always trying. On top of the regular yearly change, students now have many choices in how to attain their high school diploma. PSEO classes are an option students are increasingly choosing for good reason—high school and college credit simultaneously for “free.” With that in mind, the US History class is changing in several significant ways this year. Beginning in the 4th week of school, students will be involved in investigating and creating a study of history emphasizing various subject area themes. They will work in small groups to research and create historical modules around the focus that they chose. Each group will choose a different “lense” to study history and create lesson plans and ultimately a presentation which they will give to their peers at the end of each unit.

Possible areas of focus include art, war, music, science, civil rights, and religion. Each era’s major events will be considered, but as a background to the group’s lense. There are two main goals with this change. First, we want to take advantage of our students’ strengths—creativity, collaboration, technology and media savvy. We often bemoan the impacts of technology on students, but their experience in networked communication and instantaneous updates has helped this generation become something exceptional in these areas, and our hope is that they can bring this to the discovery of history. Second, by flipping the model from force feeding from the front of the room to student-driven search for material, we are hoping to foster a real community of learning. Too often, the traditional history classroom has been a place to cram or find tests online and get the grade, while retaining little of the lessons and values that are so vital to our students as they head off to institutions that will work to warp and twist their world view.

When Freshmen GatherWhen freshmen gather it can be awkward—not because they are necessarily awkward, but because at Mayer Lutheran High School, we are blessed with students from as many as 17 different elementary/middle schools in a single class. That is a lot of schools! And, it can be a lot of adjustment for each student as they go from the relative comfort of their middle school to the new experience of not just high school, which has its own transitional challenges, but to a whole new set of faces, names, backgrounds, and cell phone numbers. As a young teenager, it is the shake-out of the who’s

who and what’s what in a big way. To address the transition, MLHS has established a dedicated time before school begins to gather all the freshmen (this year there are 52) in a remote setting and strategically, intentionally, and methodically, introduce them to each other. The result has been fantastic! If there was an apt “old school” saying to sum up the experience it would have to be “All for one and one for all!” Phones aren’t allowed on the trip. Face-to-face conversations, laughter, and personal engagement are the course. In the end, the group has taken the initial steps to transform from separate individuals into a community—an inclusive group of caring persons that seeks the good of others first. You probably recognize that: “Do nothing out of selfish ambition or conceit, but in humility count others more significant than yourselves.” (Philippians 2:3) It is a work in progress, but a progress that is hopeful because we serve a great God that is, in His grace, in the business of transforming lives from sin

to righteousness. And that, my friends, is at the core of Christian high school education.

Autumn is right around the corner. The trees are working to impress us once again with their beautiful show of colors. The fields surrounding

Mayer Lutheran are nothing short of brimming with their crop, ready for harvest! As this part of the world is gearing up to reap the benefits of a good, good Father, so it is also at Mayer Lutheran High School. Plans are underway for the 11th Annual Celebrate His Harvest Dinner and Auction Event. The Mayer Lutheran community has been blessed beyond measure since 1961! The harvest at Mayer Lutheran has always been, most importantly, the students. Mark your calendars for November 30th. It is time to celebrate not only the students, but also the generous gifts from supporters that make the solid Christian education possible. Proceeds raised at this event are designated to help provide much-needed tuition assistance for the students and families that desire a Christian education but are not able to afford the entire cost of tuition. There are ways to contribute to the event. The easiest way is to simply attend! Additionally, if you have any items such as merchandise, event tickets, specialized services, art, décor, gift cards, collectibles, etc., please contact either Elissa Crown or Kathy Martin.

In Our Thoughts and Prayers

Belize, what a month of enjoyment you were. The ministry this month had me on Cloud 9. We had various types of projects this month, many of them being manual labor related. We learned how to build a concrete wall, painted a rehab center called Hedges for people struggling with drugs and alcohol, helped clean and prepare classrooms for teachers before school started, and picked up trash in the local park. We cooked dinner for the men from the rehab center and listened to the ways

God changed their lives. We went to a girls home and celebrated birthdays on a few different occasions, baking cakes and playing soccer with them. We even got to do a puzzle with them, one of my favorite ministry days to be honest. I loved each and every one of my ministry opportunities. The chance to change up my ministry each day makes my soul so happy. I got to do things I wasn’t the best at (building a wall) and it ended up being so much fun hanging out with the boys on the crew. I think they were a little taken back at how much fun I was having but it was such a fun friendship I was able to create this month by simply being open to the different tasks at hand. Something my team had encouraged me in was to engage in different ministry opportunities that come up and I was able to grow in that so much this month. I took up just about every option and I was so glad I did. It was uncomfortable but that’s right where I want to be, it’s where we find the most growth. Ministry doesn’t need to be sharing the Gospel through words, it can simply be through your actions. That’s what my ministry looked like this month and it’s been one of my favorites on The Race so far. I love just living my actions out through God and revealing Him to those around me in that way. Month 8 is completed and now I am off to Guatemala with my new team, Las Chiquita’s! (The short girls, I am only 5’4” and the tallest one of 6’.) We will be spending our month in the jungle in Rio Dulce, Guatemala!! I am so excited to be entering month 9 with these beautiful women and doing the rest of The Race with them. Here’s to 3 more months of My World Race! —A Now Month 9 World Racer

Happy Fall! It’s hard to believe that the season of Fall is here! Hopefully your student is off to a great start for this school year and looking forward to many blessings that will come their way! Many of the college representatives and military personal are making arrangements to come to our school and meet with students. Please encourage your child to meet with these reps, especially juniors and seniors if they have a strong interest in any particular school or branch of military. It’s always worthwhile finding out more information to help them in their decision process. Senior meetings are well under way to discuss their future plans for college. I encourage them to look for scholarship information, and we talk about any other detail and or question they may have for their next step. I have begun the process of sending out transcripts and ACT scores to colleges for seniors. Don’t hesitate to ask for this to be done if you are at that point in pursuing a college. Meetings with juniors will begin soon. If your child would like to take a PSEO course the 2nd semester of this school year, the process begins in October. They will need to work with me for applying, registering, and ordering books. Students that have displayed a diligent, independent work ethic, are responsible with submitting assignments and homework, and carry a 3.0 or higher GPA will certainly do well with these types of courses. Contact me with any questions that you might have regarding whether or not your junior or senior would be a great fit for PSEO. On September 1, MLHS hosted a “College Night/Financial Aid Night” for juniors/seniors and their parents. If you were unable to attend, please let me know and I will get all the information to you. Please note that you can begin the process of filling out the FAFSA now! Instead of visiting a College Fair this fall, MLHS students will be attending one in the spring. Seniors that would still like an opportunity may attend but it is also open to sophomores and juniors. The time and place will be announced soon. Look for those details coming out during this winter. Continue to look for scholarship opportunities on Moodle, The Blast, our website, and Email Extra as I post them weekly as they come across my desk. My hope is that this school year has been a great experience for your child thus far. If your student is in need of anything, whether it is help dealing with stress from academics, social, or family related issues, please don’t hesitate to let me know. My door is always open, no matter the circumstance. May you feel blessed by the beautiful colors God reveals to us!

“Why do I have to go to church? It’s so boring.” “What is worship anyway? I don’t understand the words. The music is strange.” And on and on the less than favorable comments regarding Christian worship could go. It’s amazing isn’t it? Christians worship all the time and yet seldom understand the reasons why they do the things they do in worship or say the things they say and so end up frustrated and wondering why? Why? Why? If you were ever curious or are just interested in deepening your understanding and experience of Christian worship, then please join Pastor Wismar this Fall as he leads a class titled Worship: Theology and Practice. This class will meet on Wednesdays, October 3–November 14, 7–8:30 PM. The textbook for the class is Gathered Guests: A Guide to Worship in the Lutheran Church, 2nd Edition by Dr. Timothy H. Maschke. ISBN# 13: 978-0-7586-1349-3. The book is available for purchase through cph.org. (The cost of the

course is free but you will need to order and purchase the book on your own. Please read part 1 by October 3.) MAKE SURE YOU PURCHASE THE 2ND EDITION. THE REVISIONS FROM THE FIRST TO THE SECOND WERE SIGNIFICANT!!

Register for the class by emailing [email protected], or online at mayerlutheran.org/fall-adult-class-worship-theology-and-practice/.

The 21st Annual Crusader Classic Charity Golf Tournament was held Saturday September 8 at Island View Golf Course in Waconia. It was another outstanding FUNdraising event, providing financial support to MLHS technology needs. The first place team this year was the Andrew Tjernagel foursome. Thanks to our generous prize sponsors, many other teams and players also win prizes from on-course events and drawings. We thank all the participants for supporting this event, as well as the myriad of volunteers who are involved in making this tournament such an enjoyable event and huge success. Our success has been made possible because many businesses and individuals have generously helped out by way of sponsorships. We especially thank this year’s signature sponsors, Jerry’s Transmission Service and Wells Fargo, represented by Fred Pawelk and Michael Heil. Our Platinum and Diamond sponsors also deserve recognition and a big thanks for their support – Big Green Egg, Blake Hahn Financial, Blue Chip Advisors, Crown College, EPS, Hometown Bank, Kloos Electric, Mayer Lumber Co, and Mayer Lutheran Boosters. Through sponsorships, entry fees, and on-course activities, the tournament helps to guarantee that the school stays at the forefront in technology in a world of exponential change.

Change

T H E L A S T W O R DBy Kevin Wilaby, Principal | kevin.wilabymayerlutheran.org | 952-657-2251 x1008

We are not the same today as we were five or ten years ago. The relationship we have with our parents is different today than when we were in preschool, elementary school, or high school. The relationships we had with our high school friends is not the same 10 or 20 years later. Change is part of life. In my lifetime, I have experienced gas prices below $1/gallon and have had to pay, at times, over $4/gallon. There were entire stores dedicated to renting movies (Blockbuster) but now we subscribe to Netflix, Hulu, or YouTube, which supply us with streaming video. Telephones with rotary dials changed into smartphones; what was once mounted to a wall is now in my pocket. We have learned communication tools like email and perhaps have pushed back against learning even newer tools like Facebook, Instagram, and SnapChat. The list of changes that we have experienced in our lifetime is immense. How do you feel about change? Are you excited for the next operating system to be downloaded to your smartphone? Have you joined the SnapChat world and spent time sending contorted facial images with catchy captions to your children and friends? On a more serious note, are you happy with the direction morality is trending in the United States? Does change excite you, frustrate, and challenge you or cause you to deal with these emotions simultaneously? Mayer Lutheran is experiencing changes caused by the completion of the new addition. We are thankful for the blessing of the new facility and how it will enhance the ministry

we have with our students, families, and community. The new facility brings excitement—first practices in the field house, the new commons as a spacious gathering place for students and guests, and with winter approaching the first use of the fireplace in the commons. The facility brings challenges—establishing new routines regarding traffic flow in the hallways and parking lots, adjusting to a new entrance and how the reorientation of the facility changes how we enter the competition gym for events, and how to clean and care for a facility that has almost doubled in square footage. But we know one thing never changes—“Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.” (Hebrews 13:8) Jesus is our Savior, His love for us never wanes, the forgiveness He offers never runs out, He keeps His promises and will return to take all who believe in Him home to heaven. We can count on Jesus to walk with us in the good times and to carry us through the changes in life that may challenge and frustrate us. The words Jesus spoke are true, what He taught is truth, and it is the foundation for living as a redeemed child of God. Consider Jesus’ words, “I am THE way, and THE truth, and THE life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.” (John 14:6) In an ever-changing world, Jesus is the changeless Son of God, our Redeemer, and our Friend.
