Natural sinkholes, called cenotes, which expose the water table to thesurface. The Cenote Sagrado is 60 meters (200 ft.) in diameter, and
sheer cliffs that drop to the water table some 27 meters (89 ft.) below.
The Cenote Sagrado was a place of pilgrimage for ancient Maya peoplewho conduct sacrifices during times of drought.
Archaeological investigations support this as thousands of objects havebeen removed from the bottom of the cenote, including material such asgold, jade, obsidian, shell, wood, cloth, as well as skeletons of childrenand men.

CHICHEN ITZA is an important Mayan cultural site. It is located 120 km.from Merida City, in an area of 4.5 km.
Its splendor years were from the X to XII centuries.In its architecture there is toltec influence .
It comprises:
Kukulcans pyramid, The Temple of the worriers
The Temple of the Jaguars
The Market,
The Caracol known as the Observatory
The ball game (el Juego de Pelota) the biggest in Mesoamrica
The sinkhole (cenote o pozo sagrado)

UXMAL (three time built)
Founded in 500 A.D. Uxmal and Chichn-Itz became allies for sometime and dominated the Northern part of the Peninsula.
It is considered one of the most complex and beautiful expressions ofPuuc architecture. Puuc means "hilly country," and is the name given tothe hills nearby and the predominant style of ancient architecture foundhere. Puuc decoration is characterized by elaborate horizontal stonework
on upper levels.
The Magician or Dwarf - Oval-Elliptical 131 ft. pyramid with steps. In themythology, structures had to be rebuilt on top of the old ones, every 52years. Representing a new beginning, renewal, death and re-birth.
The story of the pyramid is that a dwarf, son of a witch, built the pyramidovernight, during a series of challenges by the ruler of Uxmal. This magicshow of strength against the ruler, was orchestrated by the dwarfs
mother.

Palacio del Gobernador is a long low building with the longest faadesin Pre-Columbian Mesoamerica on top of a huge platform.
Las Monjas also called "the Nunnery" because of its architecture, it is aquadrangle long building with elaborately carved faades on both, theinside and outside.

Palenque was the name given by Spaniards to "Lakamha'" (big water)as it was known by the Mayan people.
It has the "Templo de las Inscripciones " . From the inscrptions found itseems it was abandoned in 799 AC.

TULUM.
Was strategically built on a cliff over viewing the Caribbean Sea (131
km from Cancun).
Was also known as Zama (dawn) because of being in one of theplaces were dawn first breaks in our country.
Its splendor was in 1200 to 1500 AC
The Mayas had a commercial circuit that extended from CentralMexico to Honduras, navigating along the coastlines as well as rivers,lakes, and estuaries.
Since their boats (canoes) couldn't resist the turbulence on the opensea, they made sure to hug the coastline or to travel in shallow wateras a means of protection.

TULUM.
Tulum was a city dedicated to the planet Venus, a deity with a dual
nature; that of the morning and the evening star.
The main constructions found in Tulum are:
El Castillo (The Castle) is the largest of the buildings, and it overlooksthe coast on the cliff edge.
Templo del Dios Descendente - (Temple of the Descending God)depicts a diving figure, (looks like a bee) and is the same figure youcan see depicted at other Mayan sites, including Cob.
Templo de los Frescos - Temple of Frescoes dates back to the mid
1400s, and is a two-story building with colorful murals on the innerwall. It is thought to have been one of the last structures built by theMaya before the arrival of Hernan Cortez.

Tulum is Part of The Riviera Maya
The 78 miles (125 km) stretch of coastline that runs from the southernedge of the resort town of Cancn, through Playa del Carmen and theMayan ruins of Tulum, finishing at the Sian Ka'an Biosphere, is knownas the Riviera Maya.
