Public Reporting Meeting 2012 Annual Report

I wish to advise parents about a public report-

ing meeting to share the 2012 Annual Report.

The meeting will be held at 6.00pm on Mon-

day June 3rd

, prior to the scheduled school

council meeting at 7.00pm. All parents are

welcome to attend. Please complete the

notice included in the newsletter if you will be

attending so we can have an idea of numbers

which will also inform our choice of venue.

Please note that the 2012 Annual Report has

been presented to, and endorsed by, school

council. It has also been submitted to the

Department of Education and Early Childhood

Development ( DEECD).

Hard copies of the report will be available at

the main office on request and will also be

available on the school website.

P-4 Swimming

It has come to my attention that some parents

have raised questions about the choice of

venue, timing and provider for our P-4

swimming program. To that end, I have

2013—TERM DATES

Term 1 29th Jan—28th March

Term 2 15th April—28th June

commissioned some research for parents

information. Currently, the program is conducted

at Carnegie Swim Centre in December. Some

parents have queried the choice of Carnegie and

postulated GESAC as an alternative. Below is

the information I have gathered:

Carnegie

Small teaching groups and consistency/quality of

instructors

Access to large water space to learn the skills

associated with swimming. Access to different

water depths (50m, Dive pool, Learners pool)

Water safety component to program

Cost is lower

Location is closer to CJC, limiting impact on

other programs at school

Water temperature is set at 26-28 degrees in

response to school request

Low patronage pool therefore better quality

water

Venue used for house and district swimming

championships

Old facility

Change rooms located at a large distance from

pool

GESAC

New facility, water slides, new toilets, new pro-

gram/well resourced

Limited access to water space

Inconsistency with swimming instructors

Hot/humid environment

Noisy/hard to hear teacher

Higher student/teacher ratio

High levels of chlorination to maintain safe water

levels for swimming ( eliminate contagions)

High patronage pool-sharing space with other

schools/public

School has less influence on conduct of program

Greater distance from school/longer travelling

time

Open Day Times

We will be hosting an open morning and afternoon during Education Week.

Open Morning: Tuesday 21st May

9.30-11.00

Open Afternoon: Thursday 23rd May

2.00-3.00

Carnegie is examining the use of portable

change rooms which will be situated next to

the pool to minimise time spent going to and

from the pool and, by extension, the degree

of cold being experienced by some students.

A couple of other points—anecdotal feedback

from another school using GESAC supports

the concerns about the noise and humidity at

the venue. In relation to the timing of the

program, we believe a quality swimming

program leading into the long summer break

when children will be swimming in a range of

environments makes strong sense.

Senior House Cross Country

A beautiful Monday morning contributed to a

wonderful senior house cross country event

at Caulfield Park this week. Congratulations

to Russell and all staff (particularly Michael)

for their excellent organisation of the event, to

all students for the manner in which they

competed and to those parents who came

along and supported (including 1 parent who

ran the 3k). Sturt won the championship with

Cook, Hume and Flinders finishing in that

order. Russell and Michael used an elaborate

scoring system which saw students rewarded

according to the time they ran but all students

scored points for completing the course.

There were certainly some impressive times

recorded.

Russell will now use the results to select the

district cross country team.

Kind regards

Tim Douglas

Incursion about games Last Friday, all CJC grade 1 and 2 students enjoyed an incursion about games. They discovered and played many of the games proposed. Playing with your child is important, as much as it is for children to be able to play games together, for language acquisition, maths, interpersonal development, and psychological and physical development. If you want to know more about some games in French, we recommend you visit this website: genevieve.cavaye.pagesperso-orange. CJC parents committee initiative To develop students awareness on recycling, 4 FSE students (Pauline E, Manon P, Inès V et Eloïse D) have collected last Thursday all wrappings/papers from all CJC students lunch boxes : 456 wrappings altogether were collected, which approximately comes to one per student. This action will happen every Thursday this term: our goal is to reach zero wrapping, so help us develop your child’s awareness of our impact on environment by using as few wrapping paper as possible in his/her lunchbox. Junior assemblies Her is the planning for Junior assemblies led by FSE classes: Wednesday 15 May Cat LA3 Wednesday 12 June Maureen LA10 Wednesday 19 June Anne-Cécile LA6 NAPLAN tests NAPLAN tests assess all Australian grade 3 and 5 students in literacy and maths. Because of NAPLAN tests this year taking place from 14 to 16 May, FSE grade 3 and 5 students will be in their Australian LA next week. Meanwhile, FSE Grades 4 and 6 will be in their French class. Working Bee The next working bee will take place on Sunday 19 May from 1pm to 4pm. You are welcome with all your family to give us a hand on small work around CJC and make our school even more attractive.

Fundraising EFM Don’t forget that a fundraising dinner for the EFM will take place on Saturday 1st June: make your bookings before May 16! All the details about this soirée are in this newsletter.

Thoughtful Thursday

This week we had our rubbish free ‘Thoughtful Thursday’ for the second time. It was

great to have most of the LA’s participate and we have already had a huge improvement

from last week with a total of 397 pieces. Hopefully next week we can improve even

further. Rubbish free lunch is more than just taking food out of wrappers and placing

them in your child’s lunch box. Each year Australians produce 21 million tonnes of waste

and we are trying to do our bit at CJC to make a change. The teacher’s from each LA will

be having discussions with your students about the environment and the importance of

recycling, reusing and reducing our waste. Below is a diagram of a great environmentally

friendly lunchbox. It contains reusable containers and is divided up into compartments.

This makes it easy to wash and reuse the next day and the best part it is there is no

plastic needed to wrap anything in! We are making a change one step at a time around

the school and we ask for you to please make some changes at home too.

SPORTS NEWS

INTERSCHOOL AND DISTRICT SPORTS INFORMATION

In Term 2 we have begun a number of sporting events. These will take or have taken place

outside the grounds of CJC. They range from District trials in AFL, Soccer, Basketball and

Netball, to Cross Country (both school and district), and the normal Winter Sport competitions

against other schools. Find below a timetable of events TO THE BEST OF MY KNOWLEDGE as

of typing .If there are any changes I will make sure all stakeholders are informed ASAP. Grades

5/6 will continue with our Interschool Winter Sports Competition against other schools in the

Caulfield and District Primary School Sports Association (CDPSSA) A draw is attached to this

memo.

Well done to all staff, parents and especially students who made our Cross Country program

such a success last Monday. What I loved the most was the encouragement CJC students gave

each other regardless of what position the runners were in. The first 10, plus 2 emergencies have

been selected based on times and the list is attached to this memo. Well done to all those

students. Emergencies will be notified ASAP if they will be needed on the day The Caulfield

District Cross Country will be held on Tuesday the 28th

May at Caulfield Park. Starting

times to be confirmed.

Cheers
