The East London art scene

We sometimes forget that East London has another side to of-

fer over and above amazing beaches, the Iron Man, other sporting and surfing contests.

BCMM is also a community of artists. From the gentle Nev-ille Liss seascapes seen in so many offices and homes, to the edgy, contemporary work of our students, artwork and exhibitions have always been a strongly represented in our city. From Rainbow Valley to Eagles Ridge, and throughout the greater BCMM area sculp-tors, print-makers, painters, and creative photographers thrive, and work dedicatedly at their art. Smaller and more intimate galleries can be

found around our city, and a visit to the grand Ann Bryant Art Gallery in its treed setting between Oxford St and Bel-grave Road, is an exercise in relaxation.

Starting with this ‘Art Issue’ we would like to explore and highlight the creative side of our beautiful city. In this edi-tion we will list some of the art classes offered by our artists, as well as galleries open to the public in our area. In future editions we will feature our artists in more detail, and keep you updated on forthcom-ing attractions, events and workshops. Please refer to the events calendar at the back of this guide for more info on ex-hibitions opening during May.

ANN BRYANT ART GALLERY. 9 St Marks Road Southernwood. Since 1905

Housed in a gracious double-storied Edwardian home and set in an established garden, this is a gem of a gallery with an intimate feel and a wide range of paint-ings. Owned by the City of East London, the gallery has a collection of about 350 works and adds to it every year with funding from the City Council. There are about 60 works out at any one time but they are rotated, usually after a temporary exhibi-tion. Its works are also occasionally on loan to other galleries.

The Old Coach House alongside the house also has exhibition space often used for contemporary exhibitions.

in support of LITTLE FIGHTERS CANCER TRUST

(Closing date 28th August 2015)

The Mosaic Association of South Africa (MASA) is proud to announce their

2015 Community Service Project – “Butterflies for Kids with Can-cer” in support of Little Fighters Cancer Trust

The project invites mosaic artists and crafters to create a butterfly in mosaic. This could be either a 20×20cm wood base or butterfly cut-out (not to exceed 40cm) to be mosaiced in bright, cheerful colours. These mosaics will then be displayed at entrance halls to oncology and wards that look af-ter kids with cancer.

Participants will be requested to donate R50 with their butterfly, because although the mosaics are pretty to look at, do not buy

essentials for the care and sup-port of young cancer patients. Children under the age of 18 who create a butterfly mosaic will not be requested to also make a cash donation unless they wish to.

The project will be completed at the end of August 2015. The mosaics will be uploaded to the MASA website and members asked to vote for their favourites. The Top 10 (20) will form part of the annual MASA Mosaic Exhibi-tion to be held in Johannesburg September 2015.

MASA Members around the country will be hosting special Butterfly Workshops and Work Parties on various dates to help get you started.
