August/September 2014 • CONGREGATION SHAARIE TORAH page 1 • www.ShaarieTorah.org August / September 2014 Av - Elul/ Tishrei 5774 / 5775 Shalom friends, I write with a great deal of excitement and enthusiasm. This is the beginning of my second week at Shaarie Torah and already I sense what a special Jewish home this is. Shaarie Torah has deep roots in Jewish tradition. Mishlei refers to the Torah as an etz chayim - a tree of life. A tree draws sustenance from deep, deep in the ground. Its roots reach far beneath the surface to sustain life. Shaarie Torah has for a long time drawn sustenance from the living waters of Torah and Jewish tradition. This love of tradition comes out in so many ways. Some brief examples from my short time here: the weekly minyan is warm, hamish and welcoming; the sisterhood practiced beautifully the mitzvah of hachnasat orchim (welcoming guests) with a magnificent gift basket for Channah, me and our boys (Eliav, Akiva and Rafael) on our first Shabbat here. The education programs, whether for kids on Shabbat morning, or the programming for adults, or with our high schoolers, are informed by deep Jewish knowledge. Shaarie Torah is also a community looking to the future. In conversations with many of you, with Rabbi Zuckerman and with Dorice Horenstein, I sense not only a deep love of tradition but also a spirit of forward thinking; not only a deep rootedness in tradition and the desire to draw sustenance from the past, but an insistence that we not remain stuck in the past - that we make sure the etz chayim is thriving and growing. This is something that Shaarie Torah has long cherished. You can hear it in the words of Rabbi Yonah Geller, z”l, who once wrote of the “marvelous opportunity” that the synagogue had to “create a thriving, modern traditional synagogue.” In his own time he brilliantly bound the Jewish past to the present and created a dynamic and important shul here in Portland. You can see it in our Educator’s continual desire to find what is new, energetic and engaging. You can feel it in the sensibility that Rabbi Zuckerman, our beloved “Zucky,” brought in his own inimitable way. From his leadership in the discussion about egalitarianism, to his exploration of the topic of musical instruments, to his warmth and many gifts in comforting people and making them feel connected, Rabbi Zuckerman represented this same spirit. Because of our history as a place where Jewish tradition meets the demands of the present I have a tremendous sense of excitement about addressing the challenges that many of you have identified. And make no mistake - they are real challenges. The dynamics of synagogue and Jewish life continue to change. Recent Jewish demographic surveys tell us what we already know: many Jews feel alienated from shul life and struggle to find ways to connect. www.ShaarieTorah.org 503.226.6131 Welcome Rabbi Joshua Rose We look forward to celebrating the High Holy Days with you at Congregation Shaarie Torah. rabbi’S remarkS Cont.Rabbi Joshua Rose

Many spiritual seekers, both baby boomers and generation x and y, have not yet found a spiritual home in Judaism. Some find synagogue life stifling or unresponsive to their needs, others simply are unfamiliar with Jewish traditions. There are other challenges as well - the magnificent proliferation of Jewish organizations locally and nationally, which in some sense speaks to a renaissance of Jewish life and culture in North America, also introduces new financial difficulties for those institutions. In addition, the ready availability of free information and even inspiration online, in books, or in digital communities, and the freedom that comes with such loose affiliation leads many to balk at the financial cost of participation in synagogue life. So once again we are faced with this most ancient of Jewish challenges: how to bring the strength of our past to bear on the needs of the present. We recently observed the fast of the 17th of Tammuz, which commemorates the Roman siege of Jerusalem. The Talmud recounts that during that brutal period, the besieged Jewish zealots would permit only corpses to leave the city. The great Rabbi Yochanan ben Zakkai placed himself in a coffin so his students could secretly convey him out of Jerusalem. They brought him to the Roman general Vespasian from whom he extracted a promise that five leading rabbis would be permitted to escape to Yavne. It was there that Yochanan and his contemporaries courageously reimagined the future of Jewish life even as the Temple lay in ruins. How will we face the challenges that you have told me are ahead? Where will our reimagning take us? We know that we will be guided by Torah, by the rich and beautiful commitment to Jewish tradition that has always been an essential part of this place since it was a little shul on 1st Street. Where will it lead us? Together we will make an answer to that question, tending to the etz chayim, the Tree of Life, that we will allow to grow in our time together. I feel so blessed, and am so very excited to be the rabbi of this wonderful community. The challenges, the exciting opportunities, the difficult moments, the simchas that lie ahead - all of these we will face together and, God willing, will have a lot of hatzlachah together, working hand and hand. L’vrachah - Blessings, Rabbi Rose

Annual Cemetery Visit, September 28Call today to make an appointment. 503/774-8577This ritual prepares us for the High Holy Days in two

ways. We derive merit by doing a mitzvah that will argue for us in the Heavenly Court. And we prepare for a fuller experience of the Day of Atonement, as we are reminded of the fleeting nature of life, and are moved to live more honestly and intentionally.

We are rapidly closing in on the end of one Jewish year, 5774, and beginning a bright new one, 5775. The High Holy Days, also known in our tradition as Yamim Noraim -- Days of Awe -- offer the opportunity for reflection on what Life really means for us, introspection into our relationships, and the possibility of seeking forgiveness from those we may have wronged. They also offer us numerous opportunities for communal celebrations. We hope that your participation at services and activities at Shaarie Torah during this very special time of year will be rewarding and spiritually fulfilling.

Yom Kippur emphasizes charity and repentance. In that spirit, we call upon every member of the congregation to

support our Annual Yom Kippur Appeal. The success of this Appeal is critical to the financial

health of the synagogue. It represents almost 10% of our entire operating budget. Please be as generous as you can, and then some. Wouldn't it be nice if we reach our goal before Yom Kippur?

On behalf of the entire Board of Directors of Congregation Shaarie Torah

we wish to thank you in advance for your generous support.

I bank at Chase. I really love my branch because when I go in people already know me. They greet me and while doing my banking we chat about my family. What is Hadas up to? Where is Matan going to school and what camp did Yaniv go to this summer? But every time I go there, I think…why Chase??

What are we chasing after? Are we chasing after good and positive things? Or are we missing the bull’s eye in what's important? Could it be that something is chasing us? What would that be? Life is a lot like going to Chase Bank - I’ve realized that lately. What are we depositing in our “bank?” What are our withdrawals? Did we make too large of a withdrawal? Or does a sudden generous deposit suddenly improve our lives? And what about our balance sheet… did it change? Grow? Stay the same?

This year at Community Minyan/Family Service we will do some banking! The Jewish way! Come ready to “withdraw and deposit,” balance your check book and begin your year in the black…(that is a good thing!)

We will hold Community Minyan only on the first day of Rosh Hashanah, Thursday, September 25, and Yom Kippur day, October 4. On the second day of Rosh Hashanah, for the first time, we will have an Adult Learners Minyan at 11:00 a.m. Kids programming will take place throughout the High Holy Days. Shofar blowing workshop will take place on both days of Rosh Hashanah, as well as other programs for all ages. Make sure you check the website, Facebook, weekly emails, as well as fliers inside this bulletin.

Be sure to join in our Sukkah decorating party on Sunday, October 5 at 11:30 a.m! Hot dog lunch is on the menu!

Youth education will continue this year in our religious school, kindergarten through fifth grade, middle school and high school programs. Please

call me if you would like to register. Our successful Youth Minyannaires will take place on the 3rd Shabbat of the month.

Adult education is in full swing this September. We have a new program to be held on the 1st Wednesday of every month - Mamash Learning - a true learning. Every month we will bring a different speaker and have a new theme. You are welcome to join us for dinner at 6:00 p.m. ($5 suggested donation), and we start to study at 6:30 p.m. sharp! Look at our website for the

monthly theme and presenters.

Want to learn how to read Hebrew? Here is your chance!

Hebrew marathon on September 7, from noon to 7:00 p.m. we will learn all the letters in the Hebrew alphabet, and give each student the beginning tools for Hebrew decoding - all with humor and energy! Sign up if Hebrew learning has been your dream!

Preschool Family Education- once a month on a Sunday morning with Rabbi Rose- come with your preschool child, do some art activity and then enjoy an adult discussion with Rabbi Rose while your children play with our child care providers!

So many more programs and experiences are in store for each and every one of you! All you have to do is join us for a beautiful road of discovery!!

The Men’s Club and Education Committee invites you to our BBQ picnic to kick off the New Year!

September 14, 12:30 p.m.Wallace Park

Hotdogs and burgers are on the menu, and it’s sure to be a great day.Details to follow

The men's club is off and running in the midst of planning their activities for the upcoming year. Since the rejuventation of the Men's Club there

have been two successful events. The first was the December 25 Spaghetti Dinner. Mark your calendars because by popular demand the dinner will take place again this year! The second event was the Harry R. Nemer Service Award Dinner honoring Barry Benson. This successful evening not only honored Barry for his devoted service to CST, it also raised $10,000 of which we gave $9,000 to the synagogue General Fund. The Men's Club will select the next Harry R. Nemer Service Award recipient at the August 3rd, meeting. The recipient will be honored at an event in May.

Other events include a Texas Hold'em Tournament in October, sponsorship of the kiddush preceding the shabbat service on Saturday, May 9th, 2014 as part of the Mother's Day Weekend and the return of the Father's Day Picnic on June 21st, 2015.

Although CST has needs that require our help! Traditionally the Men's Club is responsible for High Holy Day ushering, building the Sukkah and other volunteer needs around the synagogue.

The Men's Club is recognized as the religious, social and service auxillary organization of our congregation and fills a vital role in the synagogue life. The health and vitality of every synagogue depends on an active Men's Club and Sisterhood to attract new members. Congregation Shaarie Torah is no different.

Please get involved and bring a friend. Synagogue membership is not required to join the Men's Club.

Thank You,

Jewish tradition teaches that we have a responsibility to make the world a better place for future generations. One method of accomplishing this is to leave a legacy by remembering Jewish organizations in your will.

Remembering a Jewish organization in your will makes a statement that lasts across the generations — an action that benefits our children, grandchildren, nieces and nephews and all our lansmen who follow us — a statement we know they will hear loudly and appreciate deeply. We have a way to convey our values — to convey what is really important to us. We can speak to our children with an action that is louder and more lasting than just words.

Shaarie Torah has started a Legacy Society asking congregants to remember our shul in their will. We have already received a hearteningly positive response from the first few people we have asked to make a commitment to remember. Fortunately building a nest egg and securing a strong financial base for our vital synagogue and its programs is within the means of each one of us.

Remember the story of the man who plants a tree, knowing he will not live to see its fruit? Jewish tradition exhorts us to recount through the generations the story of this man who plants selflessly for the generations to come. When we contribute to Shaarie Torah’s endowment, we plant a tree, carrying on a legacy from one generation to the next - L’Dor V’Dor - sustaining the traditions of our religion, our people, our culture.

It is never too early to think about how you want to leave your mark on our community, how you want to be remembered. Legacy gifts make a difference in the lives of future generations.

A very large shul can be more financially dependent on annual dues and fees. We are not a synagogue with 1200 family memberships. A shul of our size depends to a greater extent on the donation generosity and loyalty, now and later, of our members.

In building our Shaarie Torah Society campaign we don’t ask you how much you might consider eventually donating. The amount doesn’t matter. We are just asking that you tell us that it is your intent to remember our shul when you create your will. A charitable bequest to Shaarie Torah would be deeply appreciated in any amount it may end up being. It could be a fixed amount of any size, or as many

do, your bequest can be left as a percentage of your estate. Or if you already have a will, you can make it your intent to add a simple codicil that remembers Shaarie Torah.

As an added incentive for making a commitment in the near future to eventually leave a legacy, we are proud to announce that we are one of a chosen few organizations in Portland, and in fact one of just a few dozen around the entire country, that will be the recipient of an incentive grant of $18,000 from the Harold Grinspoon Foundation if our efforts are successful in reaching a certain target number of commitments over the next 18 months.

Since everyone has a unique family and financial situation, legacy gifts of any size can be designed to match individual circumstances. You don’t have to be particularly wealthy to participate. Just as you give annually to Shaarie Torah, you can establish a Legacy of any size that will remember Shaarie Torah and that we will remember you for as well. We are developing an honor wall of Shaarie Torah “Legacy Society” members that will be placed in our lobby near our other recent honor walls to recognize your loyalty, and we plan to have an annual event honoring in new society members.

Your bequest can be structured as an endowment that will give a perpetual annual gift — wherein essentially the majority of the earnings from your bequest can be used by Shaarie Torah for annual support. “It’s as if my membership continues forever” said one contributor. Or it can be structured as a one-time gift if you’d like. For example, you can ask Shaarie Torah to in essence place your bequest in its “Rainy Day” savings account so that it can be used for extraordinary non-repetitive expenses. In another example, the bequest, at your direction, can be used for a specific project, program or improvement. And if you want to donate the funds earlier than in your will, we can discuss arranging a life annuity for you. We very much appreciate your consideration. Thank you!

Please give the Shaarie Torah office a call and we will arrange for a Society Committee member to fill you in on the details.

Shaarie Torah Cemetery NewsWe are undergoing some much needed upgrading to enhance our facility, chapel, grounds, maintenance equipment and staff. As we all know everything is increasing in cost. And to do what we must do, we need your help. As Jews, we all understand and accept the responsibility to maintain our cemetery from generation to generation. So when you are going to make a donation to in Memory, of a loved one, please remember The Cemetery Fund.
