Pastoral Epistle: Advent

I encourage and challenge you to attend all four Advent midweek services this year!

…but let’s back up for a second. When we consider the church year in terms of repentance and catechesis (learning the faith), we usually think of Lent, not Advent. But we should think of Advent, too! Advent is the oldest of the seasons of the church year, and its themes of repentance and prepara-tion for the arrival of Jesus Christ are just as applicable to us today as they were to Christians of so long ago.

No, we do not celebrate Advent in anticipation of the birth of Christ, but, like the early Chris-tian Church, we anticipate His return on the Last Day, when the dead will be raised and we with all the faithful will inherit the new heavens and the new earth. It is for this reason that Advent includes repentance and catechesis—we are preparing ourselves for our Savior’s return! Advent ties in closely with the themes we see on the Last Sunday of the Church Year in the parable of the ten virgins. Be ready! Be watchful! Don’t let your lamps go out!

With all this in mind, Vicar Woelmer has prepared a series of services and sermons on the teachings and blessings of Holy Baptism for our midweek services in Advent. Following the outline written by Martin Luther in the Small Catechism, we will explore:

- Dec. 1: What is Baptism? (Matthew 28) - Dec. 8: What benefits does Baptism give? (Mark 16) - Dec. 15: How can water do such great things? (John 3) - Dec. 22: What does such baptizing with water indicate? (John 9)

What a wonderful opportunity to revisit the Bible’s teachings on Holy Baptism, the great gift of God by which He has called us to be His dear children. Join with your brothers and sisters in receiving God’s gifts in Word and Sacrament as we bolster our faith and prepare for Jesus’ return. In addition to these great worship opportunities, we’ll also enjoy potluck suppers each Wednesday at 6pm, offering us time for good food and Christian fellowship. Invite family and friends, neighbors and acquaintanc-es to join us as we anticipate with joy the advent of our King. As I said before, I now say to you again:

I encourage and challenge you to attend all four Advent midweek services this year! Blessed Advent and Merry Christmas. In Christ,

Pr. Mullet

“Christ has appeared once for all at the end of the ages to put away sin by the sacrifice of himself. And just as it is appointed for man to die once, and after that comes judg-ment, so Christ, having been offered once to bear the sins of many, will appear a second time, not to deal with sin but to save those who are eagerly waiting for him.” Hebrews 9:26-28
