3 May 2018 Newsletter No.11

Dear Parents,

MAY – the month of Mary

May is the month when Catholics traditionally focus on Mary, the Mother of Jesus. The practice dates back at least 700 years and is still observed around the world today. As with many traditional observations, it comes from the northern hemisphere where May is seen as the beginning of new life and the start of summer, which makes it a logical time for the celebrations of Mary, who brought life into the world.

Dear Parents,

I am certainly looking forward to the Basket Supper Dance tonight as I have heard so much about it since I arrived at Holy Name.

The children in Year 6 and Year 5 have had a weekly dance lesson for the past term focusing on developing their skills and learning a number of traditional dances set to contemporary music.

Tonight is an opportunity for the children to present their learnings to their parents, families and to the wider school community.

I know that many of them will be nervous and excited about the evening ahead. We wish them well and I’m certain they will dazzle!

PRINCIPAL APPOINTMENT PROCESS

The process of selecting an ongoing Principal has commenced this week.

Mr Joe Scerri, the Northern Region's Principals’ consultant for Catholic Education Melbourne, met with the staff this week to gather input from them surrounding the qualities, skills, etc. of a prospective Principal across a number of areas.

Joe will work with the Interview Panel which consists of Fr Joe, two parents, and a current Principal in developing a Criteria for selection.

The position will be formally advertised on the 12th and 19th May.

The appointment process should be completed by the end of Term 2 or early Term 3.

2019 PREP ENROLMENTS – SIBLINGS – URGENT REQUEST

Enrolments for siblings who are starting school in 2019 are open!

Enrolment forms are available from the office.

IT IS IMPERATIVE THAT SIBLING ENROLMENT FORMS BE COMPLETED AS SOON AS POSSIBLE SO THAT PLANNING AND DETERMINATION OF SCHOOL STRUCTURE FOR 2019

CAN BE CONSIDERED.

A reminder that within the state of Victoria, your child must be five years of age by 30 April of the year they start school.

PRESTON DISTRICT CROSS COUNTRY CHAMPIONSHIPS

Congratulations to those children who have been selected to represent Holy Name at next week’s Preston District’s Cross Country Championships.

Unfortunately, training opportunities were disrupted this year, but I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the children who have been training over the past few weeks of their own accord.

And of course, a thank you to all the children who tried their best as they undertook the ‘Beep Test’ this week which assisted the teachers in selecting the Cross Country Team.

CONDOLENCES

Our prayers go to Maria Perre and her sister Pina Santilli for the loss of their mother this week after a long illness. Both Maria and Pina not only came to Holy Name as students, but were parents of children who came here and both have also worked at Holy Name. They have had an extremely long association with our school and have been deeply involved with our school community.

Our thoughts and prayers are also with the Palazzolo family, following the recent death of Pasqualino Gandolfo, great-grandfather of Mila (Prep), and grandfather of Mila’s dad Adrian.

We pray that God’s love will encircle these families and provide them with comfort during this difficult time.

NEXT MONDAY’S ASSEMBLY – 7th MAY

You are all very welcome to attend next Monday’s Assembly commencing at 2.45.

Along with the usual elements of Assembly we will have our Preps presenting some of their learnings and we will also see the launch of our School Banking program.

HOLY NAME STUDENT ACHIEVEMENTS

You may recall that one of our students in Year 3, Dimitri, was taking part in National All Styles Tournament last weekend. I am thrilled to let you know that Dimitri won a Gold Medal in Form (Kata) and a Bronze Medal in Point Sparring.

Congratulations Dimitri, that’s a great result! We are all very proud of your efforts.

It is with great pleasure that we would like to share the magnificent news that Tom M of Grade 5C received his "Grey Wolf Award" from 1st Reservoir Scouts.

It is the highest individual award a Cub (8-11 year old) can earn and took Tom several years.

Tom had to earn at least four level one (basic) and four level two (advanced) badges from different categories (Arts & Literature; Nature, Science & Technology; Sports & Recreation; Our World). Each badge takes several hours work. Tom earned eleven level one and eight level two badges! An outstanding achievement.

Additionally, he had to plan a bush walk, plan and run a group activity, attend inter-pack activities, attend multiple camps and be a leader of a small group.

Tom also needed to earn his Bronze, Silver and Gold Boomerang Badges for activities he completed with the group over two years.

Holy Name would like to congratulate Tom on his brilliant achievement, and that we are all very proud of him. Great News Tom!

CHESS CLUB POSTPONED

Unfortunately, the demand for places in the Chess Club was not as great as we had hoped, as a result, we will not be running the Chess Club in Term 2.

We will be promoting participation in the Chess Club by having some organised class chess lessons later this term to generate interest, and develop a passion for this valuable problem-solving game. In time, we are also hoping to take part in some inter-school chess competitions.

We will be asking again for Expressions of Interest later this term, and hopefully, we will be able to run the Chess Club in Term 3. Thank you for your understanding.

MEDIA FRENZY WITH SAMANTHA STOSUR’S VISIT TO HOLY NAME

Samantha Stosur’s visit to Holy Name certainly created a great deal of exposure for our wonderful school. I’ve included some links for your information. I would especially encourage you to view the video on Tennis Australia’s Facebook page for 26th April. Preston Leader (page 3): http://leader.smedia.com.au/preston/ https://twitter.com/CEMelbourne https://www.cem.edu.au/News-Events.aspx https://www.tennis.com.au/news/2018/04/24/stosur-school-kids-launch-anz-tennis-hot-shots-racquet-roadshow On Tennis Australia’s Facebook – 24th & 26th April I would like to take this opportunity to thank Angela Gangi for her wonderful work in communicating with the Catholic Education Office and the Preston Leader and ensuring that they were aware of Samantha Stosur’s visit. Her great work certainly has helped raise our profile in recent weeks. SCHOOL BANKING PROGRAM – HELPERS REQUIRED FOR THE BANKING TEAM

As you know we are commencing a School Banking program at Holy Name. (Please see flyer that was sent out last week). The banking program will run in conjunction with the Commonwealth Bank Dollarmites program. The program includes a Rewards Program designed to

encourage children to get into the habit of making regular savings. Every time students make a deposit at school they receive a Dollarmites token which can be redeemed for a range of exciting reward items in recognition of their regular savings.

The program requires several volunteer School Banking Co-ordinators to facilitate the banking and distribution of School Banking rewards. This only takes a small amount of your time one day a week and the Commonwealth Bank will provide full training and support in how to run the program. Your help with the program will greatly benefit our children as they develop vital saving skills and also help our school with fundraising. If you are interested in volunteering for this great program, please email the office:

[email protected]

with the Subject Heading: School Banking Co-ordinators detailing your contact details. School Banking will be held every Friday starting on Friday, 11th May.

Obviously, it would be great to have a few volunteers so the responsibility can be shared around. We have a number of School Banking Coordinators’ Training Sessions coming up and I would like to invite you to the following training sessions commencing at 9.15am on the following days.

Friday, 11th May Friday, 18th May Friday, 25th May Volunteers are required to attend all three training sessions.

**Information on how to start up an account is included in this Newsletter. NAPLAN - the NATIONAL ASSESSMENT PROGRAM – LITERACY AND NUMERACY (NAPLAN) – for children in Year 3 and Year 5.

As mentioned at the start of the term, NAPLAN — National Assessment Program Literacy and Numeracy for students in Years 3 and 5 will take place on Tuesday 15th May, Wednesday 16th May and Thursday 17th May.

We expect all students to sit the NAPLAN, so attendance is important. The best way you can help your child prepare for NAPLAN is to let them know that NAPLAN is just one part of their school program, and to urge them to simply do the best they can on the day.

The results of the tests provide diagnostic information for parents and teachers about a child’s performance in Literacy and Numeracy. This information is just one of the many tools we use in supporting our teaching and learning programs to improve student achievement. NAPLAN tests provide point-in-time information regarding student progress across Australia in literacy and numeracy and are intended to complement teacher judgement and the wide range of formal and informal testing programs that are already in use in schools.

As with all single assessments, NAPLAN tests are not intended to be used in isolation from other school-based assessment programs. At Holy Name we ensure that, along with a whole-school planning for delivery of the curriculum, a variety of assessment tasks are used to access and monitor student learning.

We wish all the children all the best with their efforts.

*** An information sheet for children in Year 3 and Year 5 will be sent home today.

SCHOOL PUNCTUALITY I am quite concerned by the number of children arriving late for school. The school day commences at 8.50am daily, with playground supervision commencing at 8.30. Children may start accessing their classrooms at the first bell at 8.40 ready to commence at 8.50. There is therefore, a twenty minute window that children can be at school. I ask that you strive to have your students at school by 8.40 and this will allow for those times when you may be running late. As mentioned, the school gates are closed up until 8.30. Please ensure your child does not arrive prior to this time. We do a have a Before School Care program so please make use of this service if you require to drop off your children before 8.30. MOTHER’S DAY PRAYER SERVICE AND AFTERNOON TEA – THURSDAY, 10th MAY

Just a reminder that the annual Mother’s day prayer service will be conducted on Thursday afternoon this year commencing at 2pm, which will be followed by afternoon tea in the ILC.

SCHOOL ADVISORY COUNCIL (S.A.C.)

My thanks to the 2018 School Advisory Council for their committed involvement this year. It really has been a privilege to work with such an enthusiastic group of parents and staff who are focused on ensuring that we can enhance the life of our school community. On a regular basis, we will be providing you with a summary of the areas of focus that the S.A.C. has been addressing. The first summary is attached in this Newsletter.

CERES EXCURSION (Centre for Education and Research in Environmental Strategies)

YEAR 3 and Year 4 EXCURSION REPORT CERES is a wildlife conservation centre that helps to make sure the original Australian land is healthy and clean. On the 18th of April the Grade 3/4s went on an excursion to CERES to learn about Aboriginal culture and wildlife. Our first session was about how important worms are to the world wildlife because they

make compost. Our second session was learning about Aboriginal spices and plants like "pigs face" the plant. You break a stem of the plant and squeeze the liquid into your mouth. Our third session was learning about the Merri Merri which translates to ‘Rocky Water’. We also listened to the Bellbirds chirping. We all had such a great day at CERES.

By Maddison M and Bianca B 4P

Last Wednesday, the 18th of April, the Grade 3/4s went to CERES. We learned about Aboriginals and we also learned about worms. We went on a bush walk and while we were walking, we went past bush foods to eat. They were very tasty! We also got to hold baby worms, some teenage worms and even adult worms. We also learned about compost and recycling bins. We finished the day off with a play called

"Tiddalik the Frog". It was about a frog that was very thirsty who drank all the water in the land. The animals tried to make him laugh so he could laugh out all the water. Overall we had lots of fun!

By Josh S and James A 4P

On Wednesday the 18th of April Grade 3 and 4 went to CERES and learnt how to look after the environment. In one activity we had to dig for bugs and learnt worms are both girls and boys. We also ate bush tucker and learnt which plants are ok to eat. We acted out the story of Tiddalik the Frog and felt possum fur and skin. We even learnt that under Plenty Road there was a dirt track. It was great! By Ellen and Gabby 4B

MARY OUR MOTHER

The month of May is especially dedicated to Our Blessed Mother Mary. During this month we can use each day to offer up to Mary, loving prayers from our

hearts. This Christian custom of dedicating the month of May to the Blessed Virgin

arose at the end of the 13th century. Mary has a very unique role in salvation history as the Mother of God, who despite her own fears agreed to bring our

Lord Jesus into the world. During this month try and give Mary a special spot in your prayer life.

O Jesus, Divine Master,

I thank and bless Your most merciful Heart for having given us Mary most holy as our Mother, Teacher and Queen.

From the cross You placed us all in her hands.

You gave her a great heart, much wisdom and immense power. May all mankind know her, pray to her!

May all permit themselves to be led by her to You. Amen.

SCHOOL ADVISORY COUNCIL SUMMARY REPORT: TERM 1 2018

The first meeting for 2018 was one of mixed emotion as we welcomed members to the first

meeting, and farewelled Fr. Peter. The group acknowledged and thanked Fr. Peter for his many

years of service to the Holy Name Parish, School and Community. We wished him all the best for

his retirement and hope good health and happiness greet him always.

Our second meeting was met with much anticipation as we welcomed Holy Name’s newly

appointed Parish Priest, Father Joe Bui Duc Tien.

The School Advisory Council members and positions for 2018 are:

NAME SAC POSITION

Father Joe Tien Parish Priest

Nick Marinelli Principal

Derryn Ling Vice Principal, I.C.T. & Maths Coordinator, Grade 6 Teacher

Dennis Apostolopoulos Children in Year 4 and 6

Adrian Gervasoni Child in Prep MAD Representative

Vittoria Montesano-Sloan Child in Year 4

Jenni Montgomery Child in Year 5

Marla Paul Children in Year 1 and 5 Chair Person

Romel Reckerman Children in Year 1 and 3 Deputy Chair Person

Vicky Sartor Children in Year 1, 3 and 5 P&F Representative

Angela Sergi Par Children in Year 2 and 4 Secretary

It was agreed by all members to rename the School Advisory Board to the School Advisory Council

(SAC) going forward. The role of the SAC is to advise and be a conduit between the School and the

Community. The word ‘Council’ is more encompassing of the community which is a sense we seek

to foster and further strengthen. In light of this change, all documentation regarding Constitution

and Protocols governing the Council were updated, reviewed and endorsed.

The SAC has been actively discussing ways to better market our school to those who are

considering Primary school options for their children for 2019 and beyond. A dedicated working

group has been formed to focus on this area and a preliminary meeting has taken place.

The SAC have also been brainstorming ideas to enhance our school for our currently enrolled

families. The discussions have included improvements to Cleary House and the school grounds.

Both the P&F and M.A.D Committees have been actively involved in taking forward the

improvement ideas. The Term 1 working bee was an initiative formulated by the MAD committee.

It focused on cleaning up the grounds of both Cleary House and the school. The P&F have funded

shelving and cleared the garden shed, ready for the students to use at lunchtime when the Garden

Club commences. This has been in addition to other activities that the P&F have organised during

term 1 such as Pancake Tuesday, Election Day BBQ & Cake stall and the Wine and Cheese Night

for Prep Families. Improvements within our classrooms have also been considered and the school

staff took part in an in-service during Term 1 which has been a great springboard for looking at

ways to also improve our teaching practices, to optimise learning within our classrooms.

Term 2 Meetings will continue to focus on improvements to our school, both educationally based

and encompassing the physical spaces of school grounds including Cleary House for our current

and future students.

READING CHALLENGE UPDATE

It’s great to see the enthusiasm of the students who have commenced the Reading Challenge. The Challenge does not conclude until the end of August so there is plenty of time to enjoy the books you are reading. Remember this year’s theme: ‘Adventure on every page!’ If you have yet to receive your log in and password, please keep a written log of the books you have read. Passwords and log in details are currently being processed. Fantastic News! This year’s Reading Challenge Ambassador is Besart Berisha, Melbourne Victory striker.

The father of two sees education and reading as playing an important role in his life, and values the importance of reading with his children.

Education and reading was a way for Besart to integrate into other cultures, especially when he was a young refugee in Germany, and he says this helped him to focus his mind as a professional sportsman.

Reading with children is one of the most powerful things families can do to help them get the best start in life. For older students, taking an interest in what they are reading is also a positive thing to do - all of which contributes to a lifelong love of reading.

If you are interested in taking on the Reading Challenge, it’s not too late.

Pick up a form from the office!

Happy Reading, Mrs Angela Gangi, Reading Challenge Co-ordinator
