Anyone visiting Brighton town centre recently can’t have failed tonotice the nearly 40% increase in car parking charges in the main carparks. I also learned, from one of our advertisers, that the price of atraders parking permit has more than doubled this year. Without evenfactoring in the constantly rising cost of fuel these are very goodreasons to shop and work locally. I will also throw in a mention of oursuperb local restaurants and takeaways, we have tried most of them atone stage or another and think they are great. Just one little problemthough is that we don’t have a Mexican restaurant in the area - ifanyone is looking for a business idea, you would be guaranteed onecustomer!

This edition is full of upcoming Deans based events, from music nightsto family days. Organisers are working hard to create greatentertainment for us, which of course is all in good causes. Pleasesupport as many as you can and have fun.Keith - Editor

7Artist of the month

HUW EDWARDS-JONESMy interest in all things wood was sparked off whilst training as a navigationofficer in the Merchant Navy back in 1975.I found myself using up all my spare timein the Chippy's workshop, carving woodenobjects rather than revising for mynavigation exams. This started me offlooking for somebody to take meon as an apprenticeCabinetmaker/Antique restorer. Afterworking at several small restorationworkshops and working on many periodand fine pieces of furniture I decided togo it alone, and set up my firstworkshop in a small shop front in Kemptown. Twenty five years ago Ilaunched myself into making anddesigning original bespoke pieces andfunctional sculptural objects of my owndesign made from finesthardwoods exotic and European. All mypieces are made using time-honoured Traditional methods ofconstruction and othertechniques , often learnt by trial anderror, to create interestingsculptural shapes. I always felt thatworking with the finest pieces ofPeriod Furniture from Regency to ArtDeco had given me an eye forproportion and classical form which is soimportant in designingobjects with integrity and stature. My firstserious piece of work, displayed at theOlympia Daily Telegraph & interior Design

exhibition, was seen by Arthur Brett,Master of the WorshipfulCompany of Furniture Makers and hesuggested that I should put thepiece forward for a Guildmark awardwhich I did and receivedGuildmark 191 for the ellipticalGentleman's Cabinet in SolidSwiss Pearwood and Snakewood. I alsomet John Bly , Antique furnitureexpert from the Antiques Roadshow whoasked me to appear on his newprogram Heirlooms. Since then I'veexhibited at the Guild Markexhibition at Philips in London,Cheltenham, Olympia London and I havereceived to date five Guild Marks andbecome a Liveryman and Freemanof the City of London. I am now operatingfrom my most recent workshop justoutside Eastbourne and regularly doworks in Brighton and Roedean . I recentlyhad an exhibition and gave a talk inlondon hosted by John Bly.

9Lido Nights Review 9

LIDO NIGHTS MARCHLive music at the Saltdean Community CentreMarch saw The Lido Rock ‘n’ Roll back the years for the return of Micky Hart and the Heartbreakers, foran evening of fun and nostalgia.I arrived a little late for this gig only to find the party hadstarted without me! Once more The Lido was packed tocapacity and on the dance floor there wasn’t even enoughroom to swing round a blue suede shoe. The ever popularMicky Hart and the Heartbreakers were on stage confidentlybashing out Rock ‘n’ Roll classics to an enthusiastic audience. They have a good following this band and there were manypeople from outside the local area who had come to enjoy theshow. It was one of those gigs where the dancers (many dressed indistinctive 50s Rock ‘n’ Roll style clothing) were as much fun towatch as the band. Whether they were jiving, doing thejitterbug or strolling along to Wooly Bully, it all added to thesense of fun which essentially is what a Rock ‘n’ Roll gig is allabout. There are no real surprises with song choices. Rock ‘n’Roll music has always been defined by the era of the 50’s tomid 60’s. Give or take a bit of 70’s Showaddywaddy and 80’sShakin’ Stevens and that’s about it. But these simple threechord tunes with their 12 bar progressions will probably still

have people dancing in another fifty years time. How manymodern day artists or songs can you confidently say that about. The Heartbreakers are a slick and polished band who knowtheir audience and do what they do very well. However – theyshould maybe treat themselves to a new PA system. The clarityof sound could have been better and any spoken words werecompletely lost. When they called the raffle at half time, Ididn’t have a clue whether I had won or not! That point aside, this was another great evening and another great band at TheCommunity Centre. On Saturday May 19, we have a brand new six piece bandperforming called “Epic 80’s”. As the name suggests they play amixture of 80’s disco, soul and funk. So if you used to dance thenight away at the Pink Coconut and Buzbys to the likes ofShalamar, Luther Van Dross, Kylie and Culture Club then theguys and girls of Epic 80s will have you bopping in the aisle’s (dodgy eighties style clothing entirely optional !! ) .Lido Nights is run by the Saltdean Community Association .Comments or questions to : [email protected]

Then the SouthCoast Soul Revue will get us to our feet playing“the very best Motown and Soul hits”. This 8-piece band, fronted by two fantastic singers, willget everyone dancing to the sounds of TheSupremes, Stevie Wonder, the Jackson 5 to namejust a few.

Saturday 26 May: For our headline act this yearwe welcome Paul, John, Ringo and George toSaltdean! The brilliant Vox Beatles(www.thevoxbeatles.co.uk) will be playing all thegreatest hits from the Fab Four. Computer Tips & Advice 31

Speed it up!13

If you have reached the stage of thinking that the best way to speed up your computer or your laptop is to hurl itthrough the nearest window, may we hold you back for just a little while? We've collated our top five, our simplestcheck list, to see if there are alternatives to testing Newton’s law of gravity in speeding up your IT.

1. Viruses: I know, we do go on a bit about viruses don't we?But the fact is that millions of people are victims to them everysingle week. Even those who have an anti virus installed can stillfall prey to them - do a virus scan if you know how to, and if notjust ask us.

2. RAM: not all computers or laptops can have memory added, but a great many can - if yours is able to take more then it couldspeed it up significantly. Again, if you are unsure please feelfree to ask us.

3. Disc Space: it doesn't matter whether you have a laptop or adesktop; you should always have 25% of your hard drive free atall times. Over loading your hard drive will lead to a lethargiclaptop.

4. Internet: here's a thought - what if it's not your computer'sfault? Some internet provision is so slow it could feel like yourlaptop is taking forever - and if it's slower in some parts of thehouse this can be resolved very simply.

5. Router: You may have super internet provision, but has yourrouter been configured correctly? Or is it clashing and fightingwith your neighbour's router by both trying to access the samechannel?

Please don't let your IT stress you out at all - we are alwayshappy to take a look, or have a chat, and see if we can give youstress free IT.

In the meantime, we wish you, as always, continued happy andsafe computing.

Saltdean Community Associationevents update.

BUSINESSL O C A L

It is not all about music; April saw the first Arts andAlternative Therapies Fair, which saw a steadystream of visitors.  It is always difficult with a newevent but as we have had people book up fortables for our next one it definitely seems to havebeen a success.

Another new event last month was the Quiz Night.Sixteen teams pitted their knowledge against eachother and at the interval it was pretty close butthere was a winner and in time honouredtradition, a team who claimed the wooden spoon.

A big THANK YOU to everyone who supports theseevents.  All the profits go back into running yourcommunity centre.

There are few people who cannot be aware of theissues currently facing the Lido.  However, the SCAcommittee wants to assure residents that thesedifficulties have not affected the activities andevents that we run at the centre.

Check out our website at www.saltdeancc.co.ukfor what’s happening. We have some excitingevents planned for the rest of 2012.

Saltdean Community Association news

Saltdean Community Association (SCA) regularly runs ‘Lido Nights’ – live music events – at Saltdean Lido. Word is spreading about these and we regularly have the hall filled to capacity.  We now also havebands contacting us wanting to play the venue.  This means we can introduce the regulars to some newand exciting bands as well as keeping the favourites.

Successful Renting 14 with Denise Whittington of Lets GoSuccessful Letting

The seasonal increase in activity in the sales market has contributed to a greater demand by tenants asmore landlords have taken their properties off the market to try to sell them. In many areas rents havebeen rising in response to increased tenant demand. This makes Buy-to-Let an increasingly attractive financial investment and well worth considering now.

Buyers & Sellers& Short Lets

The growth of the demand for private rented prop-erty has been steadily increasing over the past 10years. It has been estimated that over 1 million ex-tra rental properties will be needed in the UK by2016. The private rented sector and Buy-to-Letlandlords are considered to be crucial to the futuresupply of housing. With the future of the economyuncertain, and with poor returns on other forms ofinvestment, including commercial property, resi-dential property remains a good long term invest-ment.If you are trying to sell but not receiving the offersyou want, consider renting your property out fortwo or three months. Short Lets, especially at thistime of year and in our area can command highrents. This type of rental is ideal for professional peoplewho come to work here for a time, or for thosewho are having their own property refurbishedand need to move out for a short period. There areothers who are considering buying but want to livein the area while they look for a suitable property-they may even like your property so much thatthey end up buying it! Or you might decide to con-tinue renting the property for a longer period rath-er than selling. Some tenants will be sympatheticto the situation of the owner who is trying to sell, especially if they are potential buyers or sellersthemselves and may agree for the sales market-ing to continue whilst they are living at the proper-ty.It can be difficult for people these days to decideon the best course of action. Sometimes there isno easy answer. At Lets Go we aim to help our cli-ents make decisions by offering help and advice onthe options available and to give support where itis needed. We can provide a whole range of servic-

es covering the sale and letting of your propertyand even help with maintenance and renovation.

If you would like help and advice to make adecision about selling or renting your propertyand would like to have a chat with Denise visitLets Go at 59 High Street, Rottingdean, Bright-on, ‘phone 01273 236547 or email to:[email protected].

Bridgeford’s Best Bites:Vitamin B3 Studies byDr. A Hoffer M.D.Ph.D.

The anti-pellagra vitamin was the 3 water soluble vitamin to be discovered and so named vitamin B3, also known in variousforms as niacin, nicotinamide, nicotinic acid. It is made in the body from the amino acid, tryptophan (found in turkey) and shouldhave been classified as an amino acid rather than a vitamin, which cannot be made in the body. On average 1mg of vitamin B3 ismade from 60mg of tryptophan. Pellagra could be known as tryptophan deficiency disease.

Pellagra was endemic in southern U.S.A until the 1940s, de-scribed by the four D's dermatitis, diarrhoea, dementia anddeath. Dementia is a last stage phenomenon, in the early stagesit resembles more the schizophrenias. Early pellagrologists gavepatients in mental hospitals small amounts of nicotinic acid; ifthey recovered they were diagnosed with pellagra, if not theywere diagnosed with schizophrenia. Later Dr Hoffer workedwith larger doses of B3 for schizophrenia.Dr Hoffer was involved in establishing two other major uses forvitamin B3, apart from preventing pellagra. It's action in lower-ing cholesterol (HDL) and its therapeutic role in the schizophre-nias and other psychiatric conditions. It has also been foundhelpful in arthritis, senility, children with learning and behav-ioural disorders, addiction including drugs and alcohol, and inrelieving the body of the pernicious effect of chronic stress, freeing it to carry on its function of repairing itself more effi-ciently. Vitamin B3 is a specific antidote to adrenalin.Bill Wilson of Alcoholics Anonymous used it in 1960 after seeingpositive results by psychiatrist, Dr Hoffer with schizophrenic pa-tients, some who were also alcoholic. Bill was curious and took3g daily. Within a few weeks fatigue and depression, which hadplagued him for years was gone. He gave it to 30 friends in AA.10 were free of anxiety, tension and depression within onemonth, 10 more were well in 3 months. After 6 months he wasconvinced it would be a useful addition to treatment in AA.Pregnant women in last trimester convert tryptophan to niacinthree times as efficiently as non pregnant females. There is evi-dence that the contraceptive steroids, estrogens, stimulatetryptophan oxygenase, the enzyme that converts tryptophaninto niacin.Women on average live longer than men, who have beenshown to increase their longevity by taking niacin. Is the longev-

ity in women related to increased conversion of tryptophan toniacin under the stimulus of oestrogen production? Does thesame phenomenon explain the decreased incidence of coro-nary artery disease in women?

Neighbourhood WatchYour monthly update from the Saltdean, Rottingdean & Ovingdean Neighbourwood watch.

KEEP A LID ON CRIMEEach incident or emergency is different, and there are no hard and fast set of rules for what you report, and in which order. However, a simple mnemonic like LID - Location, Identification, Description - will help order your thoughts.

The Contact Centre tells us that many people are nervous atcalling the Police, or are shaken by what they have witnessed. The two essential points the Centre is keen to emphasise is thatreports should be made as quickly as possible after the event, and accurate descriptions given, such as car registrations (evenif only a few numbers or letters). Both of these basic points canmake an enormous difference to the outcome. When you speak to the controller, tell them if you are amember of the Neighbourhood Watch, and make a note of theincident serial number that you will be given. The serial numberand date will be required if you want to add any furtherinformation about the incident, or for any future insuranceclaims.LOCATION: The What, Where, When of the incidentIDENTITY: Give your name and address and any other names of people involved in the incidentDESCRIPTION: Describe the incident as accurately as possible.Of particular importance are car registration(even partial numbers/letters) along with make and colourand/or any markings etc. you may remember.Try to note any unusual or striking features about the person(s)involved.

Cricketers’ Question TimeThe second Celebrity Cricketers’ Any Questions at St Aubyns School, Rottingdean at the end of March stimulated some livelydiscussion on and off the platform.

With five cricketing legends on the platform for the CelebrityCricketers’ Question Time at the end of March, audienceexpectations were high – and were richly rewarded. The panelconsisted of Ted Dexter, captain of Sussex and England in the60s, John Snow, Sussex and England fast bowler of the 60s and70s, James Kirtley, also Sussex and England fast bowler nowretired from first-class cricket, and Michael Jayston, well-knownactor, keen cricketer and currently President of RottingdeanCricket Club. John Barclay, captain of the Sussex 1 XI in the1980s and past President of the MCC, chaired the proceedingswith energy and enthusiasm. The audience, ranging in ages from 12 to 102, hadtravelled from London, Bristol and Suffolk as well as the farreaches of Sussex and Kent for the event which took place inthe sports hall at St Aubyns School, Rottingdean, and they werekeen to challenge the experts. Questions ranged fromconcerns about the danger of test cricket losing its noble statusthroughout the world to queries about the correct decision inthe case of a batsman deflecting the ball with his glove if hishand was not on the bat. (Out – obstruction.) Opinions were sought about England’s ability to remainworld champions, about the relative importance of the headcoach and the team captain, and about the ways in which theintroduction of Hawk-Eye has tended to give batsmen out lbw

more often than not, and thereby shorten test matches, sometimes to only four days.

The panel gave thoughtful answers spiced withamusing reminiscences and entertaining anecdotes; theaudience showed their approval with nodding heads, murmursof agreement and hearty laughter. As well as hearing behindthe scenes stories from past matches we were reminded byMichael Jayston that the Rottingdean team reached the 2011final of the national village tournament and played on thehallowed turf at Lords.

The event, which included a delicious lunch ofcottage pie and a glass of wine, was organized by yet anotherfirst-class cricketer, Rupert Webb, who kept wicket for Sussexfrom 1948 to 1960 - and who claimed to be the oldest Sussexplayer on the planet! The funds raised will be split between theSussex County Cricket Club’s Museum and St Margaret’sChurch, Rottingdean for which Father Martin Morganexpressed thanks to Rupert, the audience, Simon Hitchings, headmaster of St Aubyns, as well as the panel and theirchairman.

The audience dispersed slowly, drifting out into theglorious sunshine of a record-breaking March day. It seemedmore like June, quintessential English summer and a perfectday for cricket.
