Some days you just have to ask: What is this game of life all about? Ever feel your best days are behind you? At times, many of us feel a little nostalgic and sad when we recall our youth and see the years flashing by. With energy levels low, and the pace of life ever increasing, some days it’s hard to imagine making it to the end of the day!
One of my clients recently told me, “The day I stop believing my best days are ahead of me is the day I no longer want to live. I love my life and know the best is still yet to come.” Amen brother! This statement came from a man over 60 years of age. What a great thinker and leader!
I am often amazed when I realize that 10 years have past by since I arrived in America and started TheHomeMag. Interestingly, it has been a journey different than any other I have experienced. My entire life in America has been dealing with the magazine, which revolves around a 4-week cycle, which leads to the dreaded deadlines every month. One always believes that over a period of time and experience that “deadlines” will become easier and less stressful, yet somehow a calm, stress-free deadline has eluded me for the last 10 years.
Deadline in our world is like climbing a mountain for 4 weeks, and the closer we get to the finish, the steeper the incline. We arrange holidays, seminars, meetings and social events around our deadlines as a way of life. Although, sometimes our ladder seems perpetually stuck in the 4-week groove!
Deadlines aside, one concept of life which has always amused me, is how we often feel we have arrived at the top, only to discover that there is yet another ladder to climb. Is this why the best is yet to come? Does this keep us motivated to carry on in life regardless of our age or success?
One starts out at Pre-school as the new kid on the block and over the course of a year or two, you climb the social ladder and achieve a certain status as the main player. Then you go to Kindergarten and start way down on the bottom rung. By the end of 5th grade you are the heroes at school, only to go to middle school and start all over again at the bottom of the ladder. And so it goes on as we progress through life.
The point of this story is that even after school, college and your first job, life’s journey never ends. It will continue to be one climb after another. The thing I have learned having traveled around the world to over 5 continents, numerous countries and over 45 states in the U.S, is that this is the pattern of life for everyone.
I say to you, embrace the challenge and the feeling of being uncomfortable when your situation changes yet again. I tell my team each day to welcome change, because in this world of ever increasing advancement in technology and pattern interrupts, the people that can adapt will be the ones that come out on top.
It is time for all of us to be the best we can be. No matter where we happen to be on our climb to the top. Start with focusing on you. Give yourself more “me” time. Slow down and don’t get caught up in the frenzy of today’s world. Our mantra at TheHomeMag is to just to try to be a little bit better each day.
What is this game of life? What lies ahead for us? Bring on the challenges, the surprises, the pain and the joy. After all, I’d like to think we only get what we can handle in life. Life is a daily, a weekly, a monthly process of quietly building and climbing new structures. Life is an eternal quest about knowing oneself and growing to the next level. It may be time to challenge yourself again, to rediscover your forgotten talents, and to discover new ones you haven’t yet developed.
So I say, “To the future! To the great mystery of life! It’s great, and still, the best is yet to come!”
