The Risks of Being a Visitor
Why should I invite someone to church? Well, to win a meal for four, of course. Oh,
and because Jesus said that we should make disciples of all people.
Last summer we had several parishioners share from the pulpit their own story of their
faith journey. That exercise was not just to help us get to know the person who might be sitting
next to us in the pew, but to encourage us to see our own stories as opportunities for faith
sharing, and for proclaiming the Good News. As we enter this summer, we have another
opportunity to practice sharing our faith in a relatively safe way. The 3E-vite contest, which
stands for Episcopal, Evangelism, and Eating, gives us that opportunity. The contest gives us an
excuse to do something that we may have wanted to do for some time, invite a friend, neighbor,
co-worker, family member, or acquaintance to church.
When I have a Sunday off, I have the habit of visiting other churches in the area. I visit
Episcopal churches, and every other kind as well, large churches, small churches, ones with a
denominational affiliation, and non-denominational churches. I know, I’m a church geek, but
there are two reasons why I do this, actually three. The main reason is so I can go to a worship
service when I am not here on a Sunday. The other two reasons are 1) to learn how other
churches do things—worship, music, hospitality, preaching, etc.—and perhaps to steal some
good ideas, and 2) to remind myself what it feels like to be the stranger, the newcomer.
There are many reasons why someone might take the risk of attending a new church for
the first time. They might be in the midst of a personal crisis. They might be at a turning point
in their life. They may have just relocated to the area, and finding a church is the next thing on
the list, right after finding a new bank and a dry cleaner. They may have been invited. The point
is, if you haven’t done it for a while, visiting a new church can be very stressful. You don’t
know the traditions. You don’t know what’s going to happen next, or perhaps even what the
heck is happening now. You don’t know if people will be nice to you, or even speak to you at
all. And you find yourself wondering things like, “Am I sitting in someone’s favorite pew?” and
“Where’s the bathroom?” It can be nerve wracking.
Every church describes itself as “warm and welcoming”. Most churches lie. I truly
believe, however, that one of the spiritual gifts of Christ Church is that we are in fact warm and
welcoming. As you see new faces in church this summer, please remember that the person is
probably feeling uncomfortable, unsure, and a bit out of sorts. Know also that he or she has
taken a brave step, and has shown himself or herself to be open to hearing the Gospel proclaimed
simply in a smile, a handshake, a word of welcome, a gentle encouragement to come join us for
worship again.
THE MISSION OF CHRIST CHURCH is to bring all persons to the saving
knowledge of Jesus Christ through Word, Sacraments, and instruction, as taught through the Episcopal tradition, that all
may know the joy and grace of faith, and to share that grace through outreach.

Robert, Susan and Christian Hall recently transferred
their membership from Trinity Episcopal in Elkridge,
Maryland, to Christ Church. David and Doreen
Fagiano, recent attendees, have now officially
transferred their membership to Christ Church.
Welcome Aboard! We are delighted to have both
families as part of our church family.
A warm Christian welcome to Joan Goodbody who recently attended the
8:00 service with us. We love seeing new faces and are delighted you have
chosen Christ Church to visit and hope you’ll continue to come back.
To the families of Ted Davis, Jr., on the recent death of his father, Ted Sr.;
to Susan Hall on the recent death of her cousin Patricia Miller; and to the
family of Taylor Paire. “May their souls and the souls of all the departed,
by the mercy of God, rest in peace.”
On April 4, at the Great Vigil of Easter, we baptized Lylah Marie Senters, daughter of Dan and Erin
Senters, and little sister to Delaney. Lylah had been born on October 18 last year. Congratulations to the
Senters family!
Any Requests?
We are once again taking your requests for the hymns we sing during the summer months. You can use
the small form provided in the church, drop them in the collection plate or just email them to Father
Packard. Time to get your request in, so we can be sure to sing your favorite hymn.
Parish Picnic/All Saints Hall Anniversary
Save the Date! September 19
This year, instead of the usual parish picnic that we hold in September, we will celebrate the 10th
anniversary of the dedication of All Saints Hall and the outreach ministries it supports. So mark your
calendars now for an afternoon of fun, food and festivities on Saturday, September 19th
. In addition to
our parish family, we will be inviting several outside groups to join us. One group consists of the families
of our Food Pantry clients. Another consists of the staff and clients of the community services board
program that rents space in the hall. And stay tuned for updates on local and state officials who also may
join us!
“We receive you into the household of
God…”
There are lots of momentous occasions in our lives and one of them is graduation. On Sunday,
June 7, 2015, we will, during the 10:30 service recognize our graduates. Please join us at both
the service and at our special coffee hour following this service to show our love and celebrate
their accomplishments.

A Sad Time for Christ Church
Two long-time, wonderful parishioners, Shirley and Lydia Pozzato will be leaving us this summer.
Lydia’s job is taking her to Seattle and, of course, Shirley is delighted because, although she will miss her
lovely community and the good friends she has made here at Christ Church, she is looking forward to the
move.
Both of these lovely ladies have given so much of themselves to Christ Church, they take a part of us with
them. Lydia’s musical talents will be sorely missed and Shirley’s dedication to the ECW and helping with
their events has been a godsend. Both ladies have a personality that warms your heart from the minute you
meet them.
Christ Church will hold a farewell fellowship, pot-luck luncheon in the Great Hall on Sunday, July 12,
Shirley and Lydia’s last Sunday with us. Please bring a dish, come immediately after the 10:30 service and
join in wishing these lovely ladies a fond farewell. We can only hope they miss us half as much as we will
miss them.

August 3 – 7. Stay tuned, as details are finalized,
announcements will be forthcoming.
The ECW ended its year of monthly meetings with their annual trip to an area historic Episcopal
Church. This year the ladies chose Little Fork Church in Rixeyville, Virginia, a few miles
outside Culpeper. The drive alone was wonderful as the day was clear, bright and sunny. With
the Blue Ridge Mountains in the distance, the rolling hills and open fields, we could enjoy the
majesty of God’s creation, something we miss in our more urban area. Little Fork Church is a
beautiful colonial brick church surrounded by acres of peaceful grounds. Inside it's simple but
lovingly maintained in the colonial style with old pine floors, painted turkey blue family pews
with doors and no air conditioning. The ladies enjoyed listening to the history of the church by
Rev. Jackson and historian, Randy Ruffin. Afterwards Rev. Jackson invited them to join him in
a short service. They sang hymns accompanied by Rev. Jackson on guitar. Scripture was read
and he lead them in prayer - a lovely service. He presented a book on Little Fork history which
will be put on display in the Communications Center for all to enjoy.
The group stopped at the Clearwater Grill on the way home for lunch - a favorite restaurant of
the ECW ladies. Although there are no monthly meetings during the summer, ECW remains
active serving whenever needed.
