CROSSROADS - EDITORIAL
Many crossroads in life’s journey come to us all; history is the compilation of decisions that are
made at crossroads. This is true with organizations as well as with individuals.
Wesleyan Village has encountered many crossroads. Each administration can be identified by the
direction the Village has taken during its President’s tenure;
Dr. Paul Elliott led the transition of the Village from a church camp meeting to a Christian
retirement community.
Dr. Robert Lytle gave leadership to the Life Lease housing and Phillippe Park development.
Dr. John Abbott secured the acreage on which Brooksville Wesleyan Church is located. (This
acreage was traded for the old church site.)
Rev. Russell Buck secured the Epworth property and the old railroad easement which was lo-
cated through the middle of the property and the Nicholson Center was started.
Dr. Marlin Mull spearheaded a successful capital fund campaign exceeding $3 million, and the
Village became debt free.
Dr. Charles Paine served during the time that Missionary Row and the Gatehouse were pur-
chased.
Each of these leaders had a vision of what Wesleyan Village should become and strove toward
their goals. Without the leadership of these previous presidents, the Village would not be the qual-
ity retirement community that we now enjoy. The next president, Dr. Kenneth Heer, came to the
Village at another time of crossroad, full of challenges.
Dr Ken and Nancy Heer arrived in June 2012 and were greeted with the torrential rains of Tropi-
cal Storm Debby. “The rain came down and the floods came up.”
During the ensuing months, the challenge of personnel changes and reorganization of position
responsibilities found their way to his office. Personnel changes continued, due to relocation and
retirement of employees. With each position he was able to find competent personnel to step up to
the tasks they were asked to perform.
Personnel was not the only area where leadership was observed. The vision of relocating the of-
fice and entrance to Wesleyan Village on Cortez Blvd., became a focus. The Cortez property was
purchased. Some structural problems were encountered and the process continues. The swimming
pool building was renovated and enhanced. Plating Wesleyan Homes (Missionary Row) is almost
completed. A new water supply line was installed with controlled zones within the Village. At the
recommendation of the Advancement Committee and the decision of Wesleyan Village Board of
Trustees the governance of the Village was changed and finalized.
Under Dr. Heer’s leadership various projects to enhance the Village have become reality. Among
them are Village Square, the Elliott Center, new audio and projection equipment and apartments
refurbished. The Epworth area is now experiencing new growth with four homes under construc-
tion and a duplex nearing completion. This is the first new construction since 2009. An Assisted
Living Facility is in the contractual stage of development. One needs only to read the March News-
letter to see many of the projects undertaken and completed under his leadership. He has taken the
proper route at the crossroad with which he has been challenged.
Wesleyan Village has now arrived at yet another crossroad. At the March Board Meeting Dr.
Heer indicated that the time had come for a Presidential Search Committee to be appointed, with
his desire to have a new president in place by the end of June. A Presidential Search Committee
was appointed and the “search” process was started. Shortly after the Board Meeting, Dr. Heer had
a heart issue which required a three bypass surgery.
After considerable consideration the Search Committee recommended the name of Dr. Donald
Maness to the Board for their consideration. On April 5 a special called Board meeting action was
taken to offer the position to Dr. Maness. Dr. Maness has accepted the position and will begin ser-
vice on July 1, 2016; thus begins another crossroad for the Village.

I have looked back upon this past season to reflect on
what Wesleyan Village offers its residents. Without any
priority the list presented below will give you a fair idea
of some of the events that has happened this season.
Summer Projects A generous donation is making it possible for Wesleyan Village to have a Dog Park. This is
now in the construction stage in the north east corner of Shepherd Court.
A second project is the construction of an outdoor grill pit which through the efforts of
the Fellowship Committee funds have been received to fund this project. Proposed location
is behind Village Square
The Village Partners are in the process of further enhancing the entrance to the Nicholson
Center, with WV Board of Directors approval, by covering the entrance with a rubberized
coating. This adds to the entrance windows pictured below.
