I hope you were able to attend the most recent convention, held at the Hyatt Lost Pines in Bastrop, Texas. The chairman of the convention, Mike McFarland, and his committee did a great job of putting together a tremendous event that provided value for all that were there.

During the event, I talked about our theme for the upcoming year, “Reaching Within and Expanding our Reach.” “Reaching Within” refers to the TMBA’s efforts to tap into all the talent that exists in our industry. This includes Executive Management, Operations Management, Loan Servicing personnel, Loan Offi cers and all of the other positions in the various facets of our industry. To the extent that we get every talented person involved in our association, the industry in which we work and the consumers we serve will be that much better off.

“Expanding our Reach” emphasizes the importance of our association building relationships with other real estate related industries and trade groups. These include the Texas Association of Realtors, Texas Land Title Association, Texas Builders Association, Texas Bankers Association and many others. These relationships are meaningful to our legislative efforts and can serve our industry in many practical ways.

Within the committee structure of the TMBA there are many efforts in place to accomplish the goals of this year’s theme. I am asking you to make time to be engaged in one or more of these efforts by being an active participant on one of our committees. Your involvement is good for your career and will serve our industry. There are no prerequisites to be involved, so there should be no hesitation to step up. To help you decide your area of interest, I have listed our committees and a very short description of what they are working on this year.

The Texas Mortgage Bankers Association (TMBA) honored D. Richard Thompson, President of Envoy Mortgage, with the 2009 Larry E. Temple Distinguished Service Award at the Texas Mortgage Bankers Association’s Annual Convention on May 5, 2009 at the Hyatt Lost Pines Resort and Spa in Lost Pines, Texas. Each year since 1953, TMBA has recognized individuals who provide extraordinary leadership and service to the association and the mortgage banking industry. The contributions made by such an individual go far above and beyond those of ordinary service. Rick Thompson is a twenty-plus year veteran of the mortgage lending industry, a proven CEO with wide-ranging experience. Prior to entering the mortgage arena, Mr. Thompson was a CPA and attorney, practicing corporate law with the Houston fi rm of Liddell, Sapp & Zivley, specializing in mortgage banking transactions. Mr. Thompson began his mortgage career in 1987 with North American Mortgage in Houston. In 1989 he joined First Gibraltar Mortgage Corporation and its subsidiary, Troy & Nichols, as President and Chief Operating Offi cer. While at First Gibraltar, Mr. Thompson managed day-to-day operations and oversaw numerous acquisitions of a diverse range of mortgage-

related companies and assets. Upon the sale of the combined mortgage operations and portfolio to Chase Home Loans, Mr. Thompson and two partners founded Aegis Mortgage Corporation in 1993. Aegis entered the production and servicing businesses and grew into a Top Thirty, multi-channel lender by mid-2006, with $20 billion in annual origination volume. The company also built a rated servicing platform from the ground up. Along the way, Mr. Thompson led a team that purchased and consolidated several sub-performing mortgage platforms in a diverse array of origination channels, including prime wholesale, subprime wholesale, subprime retail, second liens, and subprime correspondent. In addition to these acquisitions, Mr. Thompson purchased Standard Federal Savings Bank’s loan servicing platform for First Nationwide Bank in 1994-95, managing the consolidation of First Nationwide’s servicing into the Standard Federal platform. Mr. Thompson left Aegis in October 2006, and currently is President of Envoy Mortgage, a residential origination and servicing company based in Houston. Mr. Thompson is a past board member and past president of the Texas Mortgage Bankers Association, and is a member of various other professional and mortgage banking organizations.

The Texas Mortgage Bankers Association is taking a

signifi cantly large role in working with our regulators and all

mortgage lenders to ensure the continued strength of our

residential real estate markets. We plan to assume the lead in

providing lenders with their pre-licensing education requirements

under the SAFE Mortgage Licensing Act signed into law this year.

TMBA is also working to develope and provide approved several

other licensing programs in the near future.

As the third largest mortgage lending association in the

nation, we are in the best position to manage this endeavor.
