Commemorate Mother’s Day at a number of great events across Hamilton and Boone countiesBy Christian Sorrell • [email protected]

Every year, sons, daughters and husbands everywhere are required to find a great way to treat their loved one on Mother’s Day. With so many wonderful local restaurants and establishments across our five communities, there are lots of great options when it comes to showing that most important woman in your life how special she really is.

Brunch and tea tend to be the name of the game on Mother’s Day, but no one wants to take their family and, most importantly, their mother to a subpar or standard dining experi-ence. Luckily, a number of local tea rooms are offering some great options.

Rita’s Backyard Garden and Tea Room in Fishers will be hosting its Mother’s Day Brunch on Sunday. The intimate setting of the historic Brooks' family barn will create the perfect holiday atmosphere. Mr. Bob’s waffles, pork loin and more will be featured options for the meal. For dessert, lemon squares, pink tea cake and espresso Bundt cake will be served.

The R. L. Wilson House in Noblesville will be continuing the tradition with their 3rd an-nual Mother’s Day Tea. Elegant, custom tabl-escapes and beautiful fresh flower centerpieces will make this one of the most decadent and fanciful events of the weekend. The 5-course tea will be completed with a grand dessert fi-nale by Heavenly Sweets.

While brunch is undoubtedly the primary tradition on Mother’s Day, there are several events going on in the area that put an interest-ing twist on the standard mid-morning meal.

The Indiana Transportation Museum is hosting one of the most unique events in the area. The La Bella Donna train will depart from Forest Park in Noblesville late Sunday morning. From there, it will travel north along the scenic Nickel Plate Line toward Tipton. Upon arrival, a buffet luncheon will be served at the Tipton Elks Club. The train will then depart for a relaxing return trip.

Zionsville’s Traders Point Creamery will be featuring both brunch and dinner on Sunday at its Loft Restaurant. The restaurant’s beauti-

ful and rustic interior coupled with the beauty of the creamery itself will make for a wonder-ful start to the day. Dinner service will feature classic songs from Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin and more performed by local musicians Greg Anderson and Steve Quinn.

For those looking for more than the stan-dard Mother’s Day brunch at a nearby chain restaurant, there are truly a wide array of options. Be sure to make your reservations sooner rather than later because there is noth-ing more nerve-wracking than an approaching unplanned or gift-less holiday.

PRESENTS THIS OFF-BROADWAY MUSICAL COMEDY HIT!

Chris Hemsworth of “Thor” fame is clearly the film’s biggest name but, other actors quickly steal the show. (Submitted photo)

Review by Christian Sorrell

In “The Cabin in the Woods,” what appears to be little more than a run-of-the-mill horror film becomes one of the most interesting and exceptionally awesome takes on the genre audi-ences have seen in years.

On a base level, the film is about a group of young college co-eds going on a weekend vaca-tion at a family member’s cabin in the woods. If that sounds like the plot of a million other hor-ror films, that’s because it is. It is this stereotype that the film plays with in such great ways, both from a character and a story standpoint.

While Fran Kranz (who formally worked with "Cabin" co-writer Joss Whedon in the short-lived series "Dollhouse") is great as the lovable and harmless stoner character, Bradley Whitford and Richard Jenkins quickly steal the show as two unexpected characters that make an appear-ance early in the film.

Oddly, the movie was filmed in its entirety in 2009 prior to star Chris Hemsworth’s block-buster performance as Thor in the film of the same name. Production issues and disputes over a possible 3-D post-conversion led to the film be-ing shelved until its release just a few weeks ago.

It is impossible to explain all of the reasons why “The Cabin in the Woods” is such an inter-esting and refreshing take on horror films with-out spoiling much of what makes it great. This is

a film that toys with the audience’s expectations from the very first scene and continues to throw you for a loop right till the very end. If you enjoy horror films, this is a must see. Just avoid as many

trailers, in-depth reviews, and Wikipedia as long as you can. The movie will be much more enjoyable if you do.

“The Cabin in the Woods” is out now in area theaters.

‘The Cabin in the Woods’ re-energizes the horror genre

“The Gods of Gotham” by Lindsay Faye

Somerville

Review by Brian Barrett Readers’ Advisory Librarian

In 1840s New York City, a raging fire de-stroys bartender Timothy Wilde’s place of employment and meager apartment. His face partially disfigured in the fire, Timothy is persuaded by his politically connected older brother Valentine into joining the newly created police force and becoming a “copper star.” Walking his beat one night, Timothy bumps into a 10-year-old girl who is covered in blood and proclaiming that several “mab kinchin” (child prosti-tutes) have been murdered by a mysterious man in a dark hood. When the decomposed bodies and bones of 19 chil-dren are found buried in a nearby forest, Timothy uses his knowledge of “flash” dialogue and powers of observation to investigate the case.

In this historical suspense novel, author Faye uses copious amounts of description and authentic dialogue to make the reader feel as if

they are in 1840s New York City. The reader follows Timothy into every rat-infested alley, smoke-filled tavern and densely populated boarding house. The plot is well-paced but never rushed as the story slowly builds to a dramatic and satisfying conclusion. As the lead

character, Timothy is smart, likeable and compassionate. Even the minor characters are richly drawn and feature distinct, memorable qualities. Faye obviously performed a great deal of research into the time period, as she weaves several historical facts about the Five Points area into the proceedings. The struggle of Irish immigrants to acclimate themselves in a new country and Tammany Hall politics play a prominent role in the storyline. Additionally, her use of “flash” dialogue

– slang used in some working class New York neighborhoods – lends a realistic voice to the characters. The book would appeal to readers interested in this time period as well as those who enjoy police procedurals with suspenseful overtones.

By Christian Sorrell • [email protected]

More than a month ago, Fishers-based game developer Turnham Games took a chance on their first game, called Expedite, by starting a Kickstarter project, hoping to receive more than $12,500 in funding. Kickstarter, a crowd-fund-ing Web site, has been growing enormously dur-ing the past year. It gives anyone an opportunity to have their dream project, invention, artist vision or any number of different things funded by the Internet masses.

On April 30, Turnham Games hit their goal of $12,500 and has continued to exceed that goal in the days since. The funding came from more than 170 different backers including friends and family of Turnham Games and un-known individuals from the Internet.

“It is really unbelievable, the amount of support we have received locally,” said Brent Douthit, one of the game’s developers. “I had no idea that we would get this kind of feedback. We have at least 60 people of the 170 (backers) that are all from central Indiana.”

Expedite is described by its developers as “a fast-paced, route-building game of world trade.” Each player is put into the role of a shipping magnate racing to purchase hubs around the world and transport goods across the world as quickly and efficiently as possible.

The game’s newfound public presence online has led to a number of changes within the game

and its future versions, including the option for higher quality game pieces if funding allows.

“Since we posted on Kickstarter, we have got-ten great feedback on game play that will likely be seen in the next version of the game we have planned, Expedite North America,” said Douthit.

For now, the focus is utilizing the money gained and getting Expedite into the hands of its backers and on store shelves across the coun-try. Turnham Games is planning an early- to mid-August release as well as selling the game in several area Walgreens, stores.

“It is amazing how many board game lovers we have in this community. I have personally had the chance to speak with four separate Hoo-siers that create games on their own. They have been so nice in providing some guidance to help us succeed with Expedite,” said Douthit.
