The FUTURE looks great! Some of our current Year 11 students took part in the Mosaics workshop at last year’s Year 10 Futures Program and created a striking mural on the local Gumbaynggirr Story “The Emu and the Platypus”.

The mural is now being proudly displayed on the outside wall of the MPC and you can enjoy the story as you walk to the Canteen or the oval. Enjoy. Big thanks to Ms Newhouse for Futures and the wonderfully creative students who worked passionately on the mural. The Futures Program for Year 10 students this year is on from Monday 21st to Friday 25th November.

Year 7 News

Welcome back to all Year 7 and new enrolments. I hope a safe and happy

holiday was had by everyone.

Term 2 will be busy with NAPLAN next week: Tuesday, Wednesday and

Thursday. Friday will be a catch up day. Please make sure you have

with you a pen, pencil and eraser. A good idea is to bring a book to read

just in case you finish the set of work early.

Term 1 saw many Year 7 students gain their first and up to their fourth

Bronze Award. Congratulations to:

booklet come and see me (Mrs Hayward) in the Staffroom near the

Kitchens and collect your bronze award and go into the Bronze Award

draw for a chance to win a prize. Keep up the great work Year 7.

From the Principal

It was great to see so many Bellingen High School students and their families enjoying the Show on the weekend. Our cattle team looked great in their new shirts and looked to enjoy their opportunity to work with the cattle in the competitive situation. A big thank you to sponsors Norco and Valley Seeds who provided the shirts. Thanks also to Ms Verschuuren and Mr Hiller for their efforts in making this a great success. A number of students also won prizes for their practical projects and had the opportunity to perform on the stage.

Next week is NAPLAN testing again for Years 7 and 9. I would like to take this opportunity to gain parent support in encouraging their children to fully participate in these tests. The individual results are reported back to parents and the school is able to use the group results to refine our teaching practice and identify students who may need individual support to reach their potential. The NAPLAN results are one of a range of strategies we use to assess the achievement and progress of our students.

This term we have commenced tutoring groups for identified students in Years 7 and 8 who will benefit from targeted skills training in literacy and numeracy. If you have any questions about this initiative don't hesitate to contact the school for more details.

Coming into winter it is important that students have a uniform that complies with our school requirements and keeps them warm during the cold start to the day. Remember we have a uniform shop at school as well as uniform being available at Lowes Toormina. Student assistance is also available if finances are an issue at this time.

Deputy Principal Update Welcome Back

I trust everyone has had a great holiday. It is great to be back. The term has started well with excellent results at the Bellingen Show and a great showing of school uniform across the school - so much so that we are struggling to keep up supplies of uniform items!

Whooping Cough

There have been some cases of whooping cough at school in the past 6 week period. Please be aware that this is a great risk to those who are pregnant, already ill or frail and very risky for babies. The issue is that if your son/daughter comes into contact with someone who has whooping cough and brings it home, it can affect you, a pregnant household member or your baby. Whilst vaccinations are sometimes feared and mistrusted, they do reduce the risk of contagion and therefore the risk that persons most vulnerable will not come into contact with the disease.

I urge you to do the following:

• Take your son/daughter to the doctor if they suffer a nagging cough. • Once diagnosed, keep your son/daughter at home and inform the school of the

diagnosis.

My personal advice is to get all family members vaccinated. This will not stop you from getting whooping cough, but it will lessen the effects. It will also, ultimately, reduce the prevalence of whooping cough which is high in the North Coast region of NSW.

A-E Assessment

Part of our School Strategic Plan 2015-2017 is to fully implement A-E Assessment processes for Years 7-10. This is being phased in over the next three years and will result in the following:

• Students in each year group will know exactly what they need to do in order

to achieve certain grades by the end of their academic year.

• Parents will know exactly what an 'A' or 'B' or 'C' or 'D' or 'E' in Year 7

means as compared with each Grade in Years 8, 9 and 10.

• Students will understand that ALL school work throughout the year,

including classwork, homework and assignments (not just exams and formal assessment tasks), will count toward a student's Grade. In fact, day to day classwork will count the most!

• All faculties will have devised and published A-E Descriptors for their

subject areas.

• Academic Reports will no longer have marks. Instead a student's

performance will be awarded a Grade and comment. Reports will include Grade Descriptors.

It is envisaged that all Stage 4 Grade Descriptors will be completed and published to students and parents by the end of 2016.

Inventors do well at the Bellingen

Show

Last term 7L and 8A science students were invited to design and build inventions to

enter into this year’s Bellingen Show. Yani Eberding (7L) designed and constructed a

‘Whirly gig ball helter-skelter’ and was highly commended for his efforts. Aliza Jones,

Pia Barron and Ella Graydon (8A)

invented a nifty machine to evenly coat

biscuits with sprinkles and were awarded

first prize for their idea. Thank you to all

students who took part and well done to

the prize winners.

Bellingen Show

An early start with the students yarding the cattle and having in them in the truck by

5.00am. It was a large show team with 13 animals on the truck.

As soon as the cattle arrived at the Showground it was straight into the wash bays and

all the animals were thoroughly scrubbed and rinsed and tied to the main arena

railing to dry. Senior students Tamika Bayliss-Auld, Maddie Brodie and Sharna

Davis had stayed at the Showground and had all the washing gear ready and all the

stalls made up for the stock. Then, despite being somewhat sleep deprived, they put in

a solid effort helping the younger students and leading with confidence in the Show

Ring and the Grand Parade.

There was a good mix of students, from the older leaders, to younger ones with

experience and some on debut.

The debutants were Jorja-May Hearps, Sian Banks, Brooklyn Davis, Tiarna Camardi,

Corey Cutler and German exchange student, Nele Lamp and all showed great

enthusiasm and the start of a good future as cattle grooms and paraders. Tiarna did a

stalwart job of keeping her partly weaned heifer under control, especially when the

nose clip came out and in the Grand Parade, when the heifer showed a bit of attitude.

In her introduction to Australian country shows, Nele showed early promise leading

one of our bull calves and it was a great pity that she had to leave to catch a plane

home just as she was getting the hang of leading. Sian and Brooklyn led their animals

with casual confidence and kept them well under control. Jorja-May’s efforts with

Bell-Hy Lollipop were rewarded with a number of first ribbons and Corey worked

tirelessly all day and led Bell-Hy Leroy to firsts in class, first in bulls and Best of Breed

for Red Polls.

Our experienced leaders were Jazz Brightwell, Grace White and Alana McBaron and

our senior students. Jazz was a great help in the morning and it was a pity that she had

to head off to soccer. Many thanks. Alana won our first blue ribbon of the day in the

first event, the Junior Paraders Award for the most enthusiastic leader, an outstanding

effort. Grace White was placed well as a judge of cattle in the last event of the day, a

fitting finish to a solid effort all day.

Thanks must go to our livestock carrier, Mr Bob Hudson, who was always willing to

help the students and ensure that everyone was safe during the hectic loading and

unloading of stock. Also to Ms Hook and Ms Verschuuren who helped out with the

show and especially Ms Lockman (ably assisted by Jess and Tom Lockman) who not

only did the organising of gear and entries, but also had the students all turned out in

the official Red Poll livery and in special school shirts. They did the school credit.

Further congratulations go to Ms Lockman for her presentation of the School’s

produce, and our vegetables and eggs reigned supreme in the Produce Pavilion and of

course Champion Vegetable.

Finally special thanks go to the Bellingen Show Society, but especially Colin Rex the

Judge, Ms Shannon Scott the Cattle Steward and Mr Alan Petersen the Assistant

Cattle Steward. These people not only helped our students but provided them with

continual good advice as to the best ways to lead and show our cattle. Thank you

again.

Choir Rehearsal for Sydney Performance Excursion

Bellingen School Choir joined Armidale, Woolgoolga, Coffs Harbour Senior College and Coffs Harbour High Schools for an intensive all day rehearsal in Bellingen. The “NSW Arts Unit” makes provision for our region to have a ‘cluster’ rehearsal in preparation for our performance on the 16th May at the Sydney Town Hall. The Arts Unit fly to Coffs Harbour with Elizabeth Scott, who is one of the Arts Unit’s resident conductors for Choral and Orchestral performances. It is a very productive day, students work hard to amalgamate the repertoire under the expertise of Elizabeth. This year’s repertoire will be featuring contemporary female vocalist, Katie Noonan. Katie Noonan has won numerous ARIA awards for her own songs and arrangements.

We will be performing her arrangements of The Beatles “Blackbird” and Elton John/Bernie Taupins “Yellow Brick Road”. Other selections for this year include the incredible “Carmina Burana” written by composer, Carl Orff. Orff was inspired by a collection of mediaeval poetry which was discovered in the Abbey of Benediktbeuern in Bavaria. He placed this discovered poetry into his musical work creating a masterpiece. The other featured composer is a young Australian female composer/pianist Sally Whitwell, who writes exciting, interesting and challenging contemporary choral pieces.

Careers News

Year 7 WordFlyers – All Year 7 students have been invited to join WordFlyers for free this term. This program builds and consolidates students’ literacy essentials and includes NAPLAN revision. All students need to do is to check their DET email for a link to WordFlyers.

Year 10 Careers Expo – at the Coffs Harbour Racing Club on Thursday 26th May Periods 1 - 4. Students have been issued with permission notes for this excursion. As all students are expected to attend this worthwhile event, there will be no Year 10 timetabled classes on this day. Buses will return to school in time for the school Athletics Carnival which starts after lunch.

Year 10 into 11 Subject Selection Evening - SAVE THE DATE - Monday 30th May in the MPC from 5 - 8 pm for all Year 10 students and their parents.

Years 10, 11 & 12 Rural High School's Medicine Work Experience Program (University of New South Wales) - for students who are seriously interested in a career in medicine or dentistry. This will take place in Coffs Harbour in the week beginning Monday 6th June. Please see Mrs Gorman for an application form. Application forms must be returned by Thursday 12th May.

Year 11 & 12 UMAT - for those planning to study medicine or dentistry. At the Coffs Harbour Health Campus on Sunday 5th June. See Mrs Gorman for details.

Years 11 & 12 Bond University Speaker - Students interested in hearing all about what Bond University has to offer, please let Mrs Gorman know as a Bond representative will be in the area mid-June.

One of our Year 12 students attended a MyDay experience during the recent holidays and found it to be highly beneficial. Travel expenses are reimbursed. Canteen News

Welcome back. Yet again Term 2 will be filled with new and exciting foods and it’s not long before it is cold enough to start making soups and pastas.

During this month I am running a Canteen Competition!! Can you design a new Canteen sign? Put your artistic skills to good use. Signage position is above the student microwave; you will see a large rectangle space just waiting for your creation.

The signage needs to have the word “CANTEEN” in clear, large letters plus be bright and colourful to beautify and promote our Canteen. Entries close at the end of this month.

The winning design will be painted and prepared by the school’s Art Department.

In the upcoming weeks the Menu Boards will be remounted and look amazing in their new frames, adding that extra flare to the Canteen!!

The Chocolate Crunch Slice has proven to be a favourite for all, as has the Mixed Berry and the Chocolate Chips Muffins which all sell at $1.50.

Thank you to all the student volunteers, though I still am in urgent need of parent helpers. Any time you can spare would be fantastic and would create more opportunity to extend the menu, offering healthier, fresher choices to students.

I look forward to receiving your competition entries and still appreciate all your feedback.

Write a Book in a Day 2016 has opened. Join hundreds of schools across NSW & ACT in this unique

writing competition.

About the Competition • To be held on Wednesday 15th June, at the Bellingen High

School Library. • In student teams of 5-10, write, edit, illustrate and bind a

children’s book within 12 hours. • Stay within your allocated word limit. • Create your Story around parameters provided - thriller,

romance, adventure, thought provoking, reality? • Submit your book the same day. • Completed books are distributed to hospitals, schools/libraries

around Australia.

Your entry will make a difference. In 2015 alone over 230 teams got involved in NSW & ACT raising almost $63,000 for The Kids' Cancer Project to fund their search to find a cure and better treatments for cancer.

What does it cost? Entry Fee $300 per team First $60 must be paid by your writing day in order for your team to receive its writing parameters Remaining $240 sponsorship payable by 31st August

Your team members will then receive participation certificates and your book will be eligible for judging.

Sport News Rugby League Success!

Last week both our Junior and Opens Boys rugby league teams were victorious in

their first games of the year against Dorrigo High School. Well played boys and

congratulations on your teamwork!

in 30 degree heat. The score was

Boys Reach New Heights

Bellingen High School’s Open Boys Volleyball team had to travel to Wauchope to

play Wauchope High School in the 4th round of the NSW State Knockout.

Wauchope are the current North Coast Champions and have held that title for a

number of years. This meant the game was going to be very hard to win.

The game was a fast paced, exciting game with many long rallies and close calls.

The boys nearly got the first set going down narrowly 25-23. The second set

saw Wauchope settle in

and dominate. The boys

were determined to take

the third set to force the

game to at least four

sets. They won in fine

style 25-19 and everyone

celebrated, it was a great

team effort.

Wauchope went on to win

the fourth set and the

game but the boys were

very pleased to have been

so competitive.

The previous day many of the same boys were involved in the Mid North Coast

Football Gala Day where they had to play the first two rounds of the NSW

State Knockout. The boys came away with two good wins 5-1 over Toormina and

6-0 over CHEC. This means they will now have to play the Mid North Coast

Zone final.

The open girls also played and defeated CHEC 10-0 and had to play Woolgoolga

High School in Round 2. Despite many attacking raids on the Woopi goal the

girls just couldn’t find the back of the net. Final score was 0-0, which sent the

game into sudden death extra time. With only a minute to go Willow Neal came

so close to scoring hitting the cross bar. Woopi cleared the ball quickly straight

down the other end and scored a great goal (their first shot on target in the

game). A disappointing result for a team that played so well.

000 – Triple Zero is the number that we all know to call in case of an emergency but do you know what number to call from your mobile should you not have reception? 112 – Dialled from a mobile phone where your provider has no reception will connect to any available network. 112 – Does not need a SIM. 112 dialled on your mobile will reach 000. 911 – This number is diverted to 000 in Australia due to many US shows quoting this number. So as not to confuse a child – 911 now converts to our 000 when dialled and overcomes any problems with children dialling it as a result of watching American shows.
