TARGET AUDIENCE EMPAC will be of interest to:• emergency physicians• family physicians• nurses

LEARNING OBJECTIVES At the conclusion of this educational activity, the participant should be able to:

• Employ an up-to-date approach to the emergency care and resuscitation of the undifferentiated patient.• Develop an evidence-based approach to core and cutting edge aspects of emergency medical care.• Practice hands-on skills relevant to emergency medicine.• Foster an environment for urban, rural and northern emergency healthcare providers to explore common

challenges and collaborate on innovative ideas in the delivery of acute care medicine.

STARS SIM BUS With many thanks to the talented team of educators at STARS, we are pleased to announce the return of the very popular STARS Mobile Education Unit to EMPAC in 2018! The Mobile Education Unit (or Sim Bus, as it is affectionately known) is returning to the Hilton Parking lot for more simulation-based education.

Small groups will work together as a team to manage a simulated critically ill patient, followed by a debriefing led by trained instructors. Cases will be grouped around clinical themes such as pediatrics, chest emergencies and abdominal catastrophes. Be sure to sign up early, as space is limited and sessions fill up quickly.

EMERGENCY MEDICINE PRAIRIE ANNUAL CONFERENCE

Procedural Sedation This simulation course offers the opportunity to perform procedural sedation on manikins, using a case-based format that is tailored specifically to the emergency medicine environment. Participants will develop an approach to drug choices, doses and special considerations for various patient scenarios - ranging from the health athlete with a dislocated shoulder to the obese patient in rapid AF requiring cardioversion. Participants will also develop a structured approach to managing the complications that can arise from administering procedural sedation. The course includes pre-reading materials, and 3 hours of on-site teaching (including 1 hour of interactive review and 2 hours of hands-on practice).

DATE: Wednesday, May 2, 2018TIMES: 13:30-16:30LOCATION: CLSF (727 McDermot)COST: $300PREREQUISITE: none

Dental Blocks Regional blocks of the face and oral cavity can be invaluable tools for the management of oral-facial trauma and dental pain. These local anesthetic techniques can help improve cosmesis, decrease patient discomfort, and save time. But many clinicians are unfamiliar with performing these blocks, or don’t have the confidence to use them in their clinical practice. This hands-on course will help clinicians become more comfortable in performing facial blocks and infiltration of local anesthesia to the oral cavity. After a review of local anesthesia principles and relevant anatomy, each participant will receive over-the-shoulder coaching as they perform 5 different local anesthesia blocks on manikin dental models and, optionally, on each other. DATE: Wednesday, May 2, 2018TIMES: 9:00-13:00LOCATION: CLSF (727 McDermot)COST: $285PREREQUISITE: none

SimAIRWAY This simulation based course is designed to give you hands-on management in emergency airway skills. From making the decision to intubate to choosing drugs and equipment, this course allows you to work as part of a team in managing the airway of a realistic manikin. The focus is on developing an organized approach to airway management, dealing with the difficult airway, and refining skills in the use of airway adjuncts and equipment. Each scenario is built around a real life case, allowing you to not just practice the manual skill of intubating, but to consider your approach to airway management in the broader context of the clinical setting. Each case is followed by a team debriefing session led by a trained facilitator. DATE: Thursday, May 3, 2018TIMES: 8:00-12:00LOCATION: CLSF (727 McDermot)COST: $475PREREQUISITE: none

SimSHOCK Patients in shock require timely intervention, and can pose a clinical challenge to even the most experienced clinician. These patients require simultaneous resuscitation and work up, and undifferentiated shock can pose a diagnostic challenge. SimSHOCK is a simulation based course that will help you develop a solid approach to patients in shock. Participants work together in small groups to resuscitate a realistic life-sized manikin. Following each case, the team will have the chance to take part in a debriefing session led by a trained facilitator, as well as review key clinical principles. This course will give you more confidence in dealing with your next critically ill patient, and help you improve your crisis resource management skills.

OPTIONAL POST-CONFERENCE ADD-ONS

Extend your conference experience by registering for one of the post-conference add-ons. These high-yield sessions offer hands-on practice in small group settings. Please note that all post-conference

courses take place at the conference venue - Hilton Winnipeg Airport Suites (1800 Wellington). Saturday, May 5 / 2018

EMERGENCY MEDICINE PRAIRIE ANNUAL CONFERENCE

Pediatric Airway Skills Session Are you ready to manage your next pediatric airway emergency? This hands-on course will give you a foundation in the principles of pediatric airway management, and allow you to practice specific airway skills for neonates, infants, children and adolescents. Using airway manikins and real airway equipment, you will have the chance to develop your skills under the guidance of three pediatric emergency medicine specialists, with a participant to instructor ratio of 4:1.

DATE: Saturday, May 5, 2018TIMES: 13:00-15:00LOCATION: Hilton Winnipeg Airport Suites (1800 Wellington)COST: $200PREREQUISITE: noneINSTRUCTORS: Dr. Joanne Hamilton, Dr. Darcy Beer, Dr. Murray Kesselman

Code Blue Cases Do you ever feel like it would be useful to practice running some codes, but don’t need or want to take the full ACLS course? This 2-hour session allows you to work with a small group to run through several cardiac arrest cases on a manikin, giving you the chance to refine your resuscitation skills, review the algorithms, and discuss current controversies in cardiac arrest care. The emphasis will be on highlighting key points from each case, as well as developing crisis resource management skills.

Trauma STARS This 2-hour session in the STARS Mobile Education Unit will allow you to work with a small group to resuscitate a manikin during several simulation cases. The focus is on trauma, and cases are followed by a debriefing session that emphasizes crisis resource management skills and key trauma management principles.
