Music industry rocks for animal rightsIt's not a status symbol, it's a sadist symbol. Furcoats aren't winning any popularity conteststhese days. That's because animal rightsgroups are pressuring manufacturers and con-sumers to think about how the coats are made. Now, the largest animal rights group, Peoplefor Ethical Treatment of Animals (PETA)hopes their new album, Tame Yourself, willfurther their cause.

The album, released last month on theRhino New Artists label, is an anthology of ex-clusive animal -oriented songs produced tobenefit PETA. The collection is a result of threeyears work and features specially recordedsongs by The B -52's, k.d. Lang, The Pretend-ers, Belinda Carlisle, Howard Jones, LeneLovich, Nina Hagen, Indigo Girls, The Goose -bumps (featuring Sass Jordan), R.E.M.'sMichael Stipe, Jane Wiedlin, Exene Cervenka,Aleka's Attic (featuring River Phoenix), andthe title track by newcomers Raw Youth. Theproduction of Tame Yourself was made pos-sible by a grant from John Paul MitchellSystems which manufactures the first majorline of hair care products not tested on animals.

"This is a very exciting time for us", saysDan Matthews, Director of Special Projects forPETA, "the 90's are going to be seen as a

Make Music Expo is open to all, withtickets costing $7 for adults and $4 for seniorsand children under 12.

Sony Music presented Harry Connlck Jr. with aplatinum award for his We Are In Love album anda gold award for When Harry Met Sally followinghis sold -out Massey Hall show. critical decade when things really changed in abig way for animals and the environment. Wehope the Tame Yourself record will be some-what of a catalyst in reaching that end."

Using animals for" food, clothing, as ex-perimental subjects and for a host of otherthings is such a longstanding and widespreadhabit that it feels right to most people. Yet theanimals whose lives are taken to supply theproducts we take for granted are not things ortools but sensitive, intelligent individuals whofeel pain, fear and affection.

PETA is at the forefront of the exciting, growing movement to accord animals the re-spect all living creatures need. They have over350,000 members across the U.S. and Canadawho are active in a variety of animal rights pro-

grams and campaigns.Through James Bond -type lab investiga-

tions PETA has been able to stop companieslike Avon, Revlon, and Estee Lauder fromtesting their products on animals. Similar in-vestigations have led to the closing of a Texasbased slaughterhouse where 30,000 horseswere trucked in yearly from all over the U.S.and penned in miserable, disease -producingconditions. The Tame Yourself album is anexample of the on -going efforts by PETA tocreate public awareness of the inhumanity tak-ing place all around us.

"When you buy this record at the store, wedon't expect you to present a certificate thatyou've sprayed (spray painted) a dozen furcoats", explains Matthews, "it's basically astarting point for people to learn. That's whywe put this record out - not to alienate peoplebut to just get them to think about why so manypeople are starting to get involved in this issuebut at the same time we don't want to beat themover the head. The record is more fun thananything else." The album has already raisedover a half million dollars for animal rightsprograms in North America since its release

The revenue generated is re-invested into continuing public education, re-search and investigations, legislation, specialevents, direct action and grassroots organizing.Headquartered in Washington D.C., PETAfocuses its activities in three areas in which thelargest number of animals suffer the most forlong periods of time - the factory farms, inlaboratories and in the fur trade. Membershipinquiries or donations can be sent to: PETA,P.O. Box ' 42516, Washington D.C. 20015-0516.

One of the best things about animal rightssupport is that it is the most personal of allcurrent issues. You decide what you want toeat; you decide what to wear - it's a verylifestyle type of issue. "People can feel reallyself -empowered by making certain decisions",adds Matthews, "like buying a brand of soapthat isn't tested on animals are little things youcan do knowing that in your heart you are notsupporting an industry that kills animals."- RW

New label urges radio to step over the linePeter Budge doesn't have a lot of good things tosay about radio stations in Canada. In fact, theGeneral Manager of Mesa/Blue Moon Recordsblames radio for everything including the dete-rioration of the ozone layer. His dispositionemanates from the fact that he has albums thatsell over 100,000 units in the U.S. but he can'tget radio stations in Canada to add them to theirplaylists.

Mesa/Blue Moon was launched in Canadain October 1990, a year and a half after founderJim Snowden started the company in Burbank,California. It started as a joint venture withRhino Records and had acquired the Americandistribution rights to jazz labels, Gramavisionand Enja. The fifth label in the Mesa/BlueMoon family is the new age -oriented GlobalPacific. 60% to 70% of the company's overall

Rita MacNeil back to U.K.for extensive touringRita MacNeil has returned to the U.K. whereshe is currently touring (April 10 through May6). Included is a date at London's Royal AlbertHall.

The last year and a half has been excep-tional for the Virgin recording star. MacNeil'ssold -out tour of Australia last fall in support ofher platinum album, gained her rave reviews, plus packed houses in 14 cities. FestivalRecords of Australia recently announced thatthe inclusion of MacNeil's three albums in thecountry's Top 100 charts, marks the first timethis has been achieved by a female vocalist, foreign or domestic.

In the last three months of 1990, over250,000 MacNeil albums were shipped inCanada, including 150,000 of her new albumHome I'll Be.

Reason To Believe, made its debut on theU.K charts (Nov. 12/90) at #32, going on togain silver status (60,000 units sold) withinthree weeks. U.K. sales of the Working Mansingle exceeded 100,000 after reaching #11 onthe charts.

This year, MacNeil won a Juno as CountryFemale Vocalist and played five SRO dates atToronto's O'Keefe Centre. It was also revealed.that Now The Bells Ring, MacNeil's one -hourCTV Christmas special, was viewed by over1,700,000 people, setting an all time VarietySpecial record at CTV.

product is jazz while the other 30% includesmostly new age and world music.

Peter Budge had spent 9 1/2 years at CBS(now Sony Music) as the National ProductManager. He was in the midst of a 3 yearsabbatical during which time he managedartists Colin Linden and Terry Crawford.Budge had never heard of Mesa/Blue Moon orJim Snowden when he was offered the job andon learning what the product was it struck himas somewhat of a parody. "I was putting outJudas Priest and Quiet Riot records and thoughtthis is someone's idea of a cruel joke," explainsBudge, "I'm not even familiar with this kind ofmusic." However, Snowden was looking forthe experience; a person to run the Canadianoperation, who is marketing and promotionoriented. When Budge listened to some of theproduct it suddenly dawned on him that thiswas really a variation on some of the music helistens to already which he calls Sunday morn-ing music. "I found -it similar to Bob James orAlan Parsons except there were no voices."

Mesa/Blue Moon employs about 21

Peter Budge - Mesa/Bluemoon,

young and very eager people in Burbank wholove the music and love to come to work. SoBudge was sold on the company with thephilosophy that he should get into an establish-ment where people still like the music as op-posed to one where people are pre -occupiedwith numbers. "I could tell what was going onat CBS when I was told that I had to turn mystereo down because the girls (secretaries)couldn't hear their dictation," says Budge, "Ithought to myself; is this IBM or is this a recordcompany." He acknowledges, however, thatsince the new management has taken over atSony Music, it has once again become a music -first record company.

Budge is very happy with the move butone of the arduous tasks that remains a concernis trying to get radio to play his records. It hasbeen almost a fruitless effort but one that Budgewill have to pursue. He believes that radio willeventually warm up to the format but it will takesome time because of the industry's tendencyto play it safe. Budge says "It's like somebodyhas drawn a line in the sand and said 'I dare youto step over it.' Right now, radio has a goldenopportunity to step over that line and be aleader." He is exasperated with radio's trepida-tion of losing a listener by not playing afifteenth Phil Collins track or enough of a JanetJackson record. It is puzzling to him how radiocan still play a Kenny G. song or a ChuckMangione record and tell him that his artists donot fit in.

It appears that the only difference be-tween a Mesa/Blue Moon artist and a Mangioneor Kenny G. is that the latter have been seen onSaturday Night Live or have a video out sopeople know what they look like. If there is an

RPM - May 4, 1991 - 3

identity problem, Budge says he can sympa-thize with the programmers to a certain extentbut who was Kenny G., etc.,etc., before radiostarted playing them. One of the albums he hasreleased is an act called Strunz and Farah whichhas sold nearly 6,000 copies primarily on thestrength of retail in-store play. The same albumhas sold over 100,000 units in the U.S. "BillKing featured it one night on The Jazz Reportby playing four tracks", continues Budge, "thenext morning CKFM got all kinds of phonecalls about it, so there is a positive reaction."Everyone of those listeners has gone out andbought the record according to letters he hasreceived from them. He also phones over 120retail stores each week and talks to the manag-ers who tell him that people come in and saythey've heard it on the air and ask if they canbuy it there.

The plan for Mesa/Blue Moon now is toconcentrate on the retail stores in this countryand treat them as if they were a radio station.Budge praises the retail employees and claimsthat "they have more musical interest" thanmost radio station music directors he has met.The retail outlets are being serviced with all thenew product and are offered the chance to dointerviews and in-store promotions. They arealso being 'tracked' every couple of weeks asto what rotation the song is in on their in-storeplaylist.

As for further plans at radio, Budge sayshe may call on more drastic measures. Anexample might be exercising a national radiobuy for 60 second spots in which 58 seconds ofmusic is played ending with a 2 second tagsaying "you have just heard "He hopes radiowill step up to the party without doing this buthe is not opposed to it if it becomes necessary. The philosophy of Mesa/Blue Moon has al-ways been to market and sign product thatappeals to a specific demographic - the 25 to 45year old group which is where all the easylistening and A/C stations want to be posi-tioned. Budge points out that "For as big a cityas this is and as culturally refined as it says it isand with everything to offer that it has to offer,it's a very, very stagnant radio market any wayyou look at it."

Dave Charles of Joint Communications, has heard a sample CD of Mesa/Blue Moon'smusic and has told Budge that he will recom-mend it to all the stations he consults that fit thisformat. Charles' message to the radio industryis "Open your ears and be a music leader."- RW

Are we ready for this ... ? Here's a burningquestion! "So, what good is the CRTC?" Isn'tthat opening a can of worms, or what? TheCRTC has put together a pretty little booklet, upside down if you pick the wrong language, which they hope will explain to the public whatthe function of the CRTC is. The brochureactually asks that question. Hopefully theydidn't squander more taxpayers money on thisproject, like they're so used to doing. Why gooutside the CRTC when there are banks andbanks of computers containing valuable infor-mation that could be utilized by in-house staff. It never fails to amaze me that with all thishandy information, why the CRTC doesn'tpublish a handy reference booklet on Cancon, for instance. What it is, when it happened etc.etc., instead of putting the onus on the broad-casters to come up with the answers. There

have been a few attempts by enterprisingfreelancers to put this information intobookform, but with the high cost of printing, not to mention the money necessary to researchthis information, which the CRTC won't makeavailable, it's just not worth it. (EC: They'veeven used the hundreds and hundreds of backissues of RPM!) So, what good is the CRTC . .

. let me tell you . . . (EC: Stuff it . . . 1)

Don't you just hate . . . ! Making a longdistance call in prime time and some idiot hashis answering machine on with the longestmessage possible? And more often than not, ifhe's a producer, he has to lay a sample of hiswork on the caller. By the time the beep comes, there's not much time for a message. (EC:That's the beauty of FAX, and it's muchcheaper after six, eight and midnight.)

Old rock 'n roll stars ... don't just fade away.A perfect example is BTO. The RandyBachman group, along with Fred Turner, started out last year to do four to six weeks .. .

and they're still on the road. After criss-cross-ing Canada and the U.S., they left for Europeabout five weeks ago, and the crowds they aredrawing are like the old days. People rememberwhat good rock 'n roll was like, and they'reclamouring for more of it, not the feeble crapwe've been getting lately. As soon as Tom getsback he'll be doing a solo album in Winnipegfor Thunder Records. (EC: Ask Stan Klees how

BTO signed with Charlie Fach and MercuryRecords, years ago . . . !)

Independent music labels deserve more attentionThe Canadian independent music scene hasbeen thriving, despite odds and often ill-informed opinion, for years thanks to peoplelike Ben Hoffman, founder of Fringe Products.

Fringe celebrates its tenth anniversarythis year and they have a lOt to celebrate. It wasonly six months ago that the company wascleared of all charges of distributing allegedlyobscene recordings. When a Nepean, Ontariopolice officer laid charges in 1988 that theDayglo Abortions' Feed US.A. Fetus America, and Here Today Guano Tomorrow wereobscene, much of Canada remained quiet asfreedom of expression was on the line.Hoffman says it was a case of "being at thewrong place at the wrong time."

Happily, it's over, but close to $90,000 inlegal fees were left to deal with. To help raisefunds, a series of benefit concerts were held inVancouver and Toronto, featuring domesticacts llike NoMeansNo, Shovelhed, Pursuit OfHappiness, National Velvet, the Look Peopleand the Jellyfishbabies.

Still, Hoffman notes attitudes are hard tochange. Recently a music trade paper reprinteda quote from a paper in Victoria that accusedFringe of ripping off one of its artists, namelythe Dayglo Abortions, without checking thefacts. "They went to the trouble of reprintingthis quote without calling me and getting mytwo cents on it" Hoffman says, adding "Theywon't review our records, the only coverage weget is negative, whereas, RPM has a healthy, antagonistic attitude."

Another industry myth is that theindependent labels are only makers of demos,"thrown together in a matter of minutes."Hoffman admits some bands working with him

use it as a stepping stone to getting a biggerdeal, saying, "that's cool by me." However, hedoesn't feel there's anything wrong with puttingout a few independent albums as opposed towaiting for a major signing. "A lot of artistsseem to give up if they don't get that big deal."It's interesting to note that in England it doesn'tmake much difference if you're on a big labelor not. "Independently produced and distrib-uted records," says Hoffman, "can be promotedand sold as effectively as an album on a majorlabel."

From a consumer and retail point of viewthe indie scene is doing well, and, it is hopefulthe 'climate' will get warmer because there'san abundance of good talent out there thatdeserves recognition. Of particular notice areupcoming Fringe releases from Kurt Swing -hammer, Guilt Parade, Swamp Baby and ZeroOption.

COVER STORY - Pablo Fairhall

Wild 'T' - 'Rock n' soul delivered with spiritEvery now and then, a performer comes alongwho has the right blend of talent, personalityand spirit to make a lasting impression on theiraudience and the music industry. Toronto'sWild 'T', with his unique brand of 'rockn'soul', is such a person.

Born in Trinidad and resettled here inCanada for the last twelve years, Tony 'Wild'T" Springer comes from a musical family.Springer recounts, "all my aunts played pianoand sang", and at an early age he would jamwith friends on a quatro, known to us as a uku-lele, "I rememberpicking it up with my buddiesand we started playing this stuff." A guitarcame his way by age twelve, "for me," he says,"it was real easy. It was just an extension of theukulele." Now an exceptional guitarist, he says,"the same feeling I get now playing is the samefeeling I had then. I feel like a kid everytime Ipick up the guitar, I'm always learning." ForWild 'T', playing is a very personal, spiritualthing; a way of life.

For a few years you could find Wild 'T'blowing people away with his tribute to JimiHendrix which helped him build up a fan baseand spread his reputation as a great player. When asked to recount a memorable tale fromthose days, Wild 'T' laughs and tells the storyof playing in a club in Mississauga, playing theStar Spangled Banner, when an American, who'd obviously never heard this version firstmade famous by Hendrix, thought Wild'T' wasdestroying the anthem. "This dude," says Wild'T', "just charges me like a damn quarter-back." Luckily, the dude calmed down andnothing came of it but a great rock n' roll story.

Soon it became apparent that he had tomove on, do his own thing. Wild 'T'adds, "I'mnot Jimi, there's more to it. I just got to be me."Now signed to Warner, he's doing just that withhis debut album Love Crazy, which was pro-duced at Arnyard Studios by Frozen Ghost's

' Arnold Lanni, who also co -wrote on a fewtracks. It's a very diverse collection with songslike Midnight Blues, Betsy-Lu, and Life GoesOn proving there's something in it for every-one.

Energy 95.3 FM to courtto protect use of EnergyMichael J. Dickinson, President of SouthFraser Broadcasting Limited, which ownsEnergy 95.3 FM, Vancouver's new radiostation, advises that his organization has "com-menced legal action" to protect useage of theword 'Energy'." Apparently the use of thename has been challenged. He further reportsthat the station is proceeding "on schedule tobring a new and unique FM dance format to theVancouver market."

Dickinson confidently predicts that thenew station "will immediately attract listenersto this exciting format and we expect to domi-nate the market in our primary target audienceof women 18-34." He also expects to attract asignificant share of the 18-49 year old femaleaudience and the combined male and femaleaudience 18-49.

Having an album out will allow him toreach a much greater audience. "I know whatI'm doing turns people on," says Wild 'T', "andthe whole goal is to turn on as many people inthe world, and grow, like a tree." The firstsingle and video, the title track, should helpaccomplish this task; it's a rockin' tune. Of hisfirst video shoot Wild'T' says he loved the ex-perience and is quite pleased with the outcome, but notes it was tough work, saying, "here I amhalf naked and, man, was it cold!"

Another thing he loves is his band, TheSpirit, which consists of drummer Danny Bilan, who plays on the album, and newly acquiredbassist and back-up vocalist Kojo. "What reallyexcites me is the thought of when we startplaying, and playing, how we're going to get sotight together," says Wild'T.

They're getting that chance now as as theyrecently began playing as support for such actsas Haywire and Steve Morse, and are beginning

showcases at Ottawa's Rainbow Bistro (April25th -27th), London's Leadbellies (May 2nd -3rd), and Midland's The Loon on May 4th.He'll also be playing at noon, May 4th, at theMake Music Expo at Exhibition Place,Toronto.

Wild 'T' has been working hard for thismoment all his life and with a great album andband behind him he just might turn on all thepeople in the world. So check it out!

Roxette hits the top. For the third time inCanada, Roxette has a No. 1 song. Joyridebumps I've Been Thinking About You out ofthe top spot, joining Listen To Your Heart andIt Must Have Been Love as their chart toppinghits. They just missed out on another as TheLook peaked at No. 2. The Sweedish super-group of the seventies, ABBA, had five Top 10songs, but only Dancing Queen went all theway to No. 1.

The group or the song? The Pet Shop Boyshit No. 1 in 1986 with West End Girls. Thisweek the group West End Girls climb to No. 21with Not Like Kissing You. If Not Like KissingYou hits the top, it wouldn't be the first timeboth the name of an artist and a song with theidentical name hit No. 1. It has also come closeto happening a few times. Can you name theNo. 1 song with the same title as an artist thathas also hit No. 1?

Big leaps to No. 1 . . . Roxette's Joyridemakes it to No. 1 the more conventional way,up from last week's No. 2 position. London -beat's I've Been Thinking About You made itto the top all the way from the No. 4 position. The last song to hit No. 1 from further back wasPhil Collins' Another Day In Paradise. It wentfrom No. 6 to the top in December of 1989.

Dion stronger than ever! Celine Dion's Uni-son album bullets to No. 18. It's climbing on thestrength of Where Does My Heart Beat Nowand (If There Was) Any Other Way, the newrelease climbing the charts in the U.S., and TheLast To Know, No. 42 this week. Unison origi-nally peaked at No. 23 in June of last year.

The Hip returns . . . The Tragically Hip'sRoad Apples returns to the top of the Albumschart, after spending two weeks behind MariahCarey's self -titled debut. It doesn't appear asthough it will stay at No. 1 for long however.R.E.M., Rod Stewart, and Roxette, are all doingextremely well.

Chapman has top add. Beth NeilsenChapman has this week's highest new entry asWalk My Way debuts on the Flit Tracks chart atNo. 61. That's a couple of positions higher thanMarc Cohn's Walking in Memphis. Roch Vois-ine returns to the chart with the second releasefrom his self -titled debut album. On The Out-side enters at No. 66.

Song and artist! Only three times has a songtitle and an artist with the identical name bothhit the Top 10. The group ABC hit No. 1 withWhen Smokey Sings, and The Jackson fivereached No. 3 with the song ABC. The groupKiss had two No. 1 songs, and Prince hit No. 6with the song Kiss. The only one where theyboth reached No. 1 was War. The group Warwent to No. 1 with Cisco Kid in 1973, andEdwin Starr's War hit No. 1 in 1970. Therehave been a few similar names. The Voguesreached No. 1 and so did Madonna's Vogue.Ringo Starr hit No. 1 and so did Lorne Greene'sRingo. The Monkees also reached No. 1 as didGeorge Michael's Monkey, so give yourselfhalf points if you came up with any of those.

Born in New York, Raised in theKitchener -Waterloo area and now living inToronto, Meryn has a strong background in thearts having explored dance, theatre, video, ho-lography and film. She performs a unique blendof spoken word and songs and uses a variety of

Two years ago Meryn put out a tape calledTalking Like Crazy which came to the attentionof Intrepid Records. They included some mate-rial from that in their CD sampler that went tothe New Music Seminar and she performed atthe showcase winning rave reviews. So im-pressed was Intrepid with Meryn that they

THE DOOBIE BROTHERS -RockBrotherhoodCapitol - C2 -94623-F

What can you say after 13 albums, 40million copies sold and 4 Grammys?Brotherhood, the Doobles 14th outing, represents the real roots of the bandand the lineup is the true foundation oftheir success. This album has a harderedge than any previous Doobie Bros.disc but does not compromise the clas-sic harmonies or rolling grooves theDoobies are famous for. Check outRollin' On which has a comfortablerhythm and is reminiscent of theirCaptain and Me era. The first single isDangerous which starts off with a typi-cal Pat Simmons acoustic guitar introand then kicks in with the kind of perilone might experience taking a Harleyfor a joyride. Other highlights includeThis Train I'm On and Something YouSaid which has a red hot vocal track.Brotherhood was produced by RodneyMills at The Recording Plant inSausalito CA. and is a safe bet for radio.(CD reviewed) -RW

WHITE LIONMane AttractionAtlantic - CD 82193-P

This is what you get when you crossgood strong melodies with ace guitarplaying and solid rock rhythms. WhiteLion doesn't come across as youraverage heavy head -banging rock out-fit; Mane Attraction shows the finesse ofskilled musicians who have a firm graspof what their audience wants. VitoBratta's guitar wizardry shines ontracks like Leave Me Alone and Lightsand Thunder. Mike Tramp's vocalshave a unique texture which is mostevident on solid ballads like You're All INeed and Till Death Do Us Part.Veteran producer Richie Zito was at thehelm of this tight sounding collection oftunes which really show the depth andgrowth of Bratta's and Tramp's writingskills. Other tracks to crank up are OutWith The Boys and Blue Monday whichis an instrumental written in memory ofStevie Ray Vaughan. -RW

RAIN TREE CROWRain Tree CrowVirgin CDV-2659-Q

It is always a curious thing when agroup re -unites after a lengthy ab-sence. Past members of Japan haveteamed up, with David Sylvian again atthe helm, leading us on a journeyacross a strange and enchanting musi-cal landscape. Written and producedby R.T.C., with words by David Sylvian,.it shows the musical growth all haveexperienced since their punk -influ-enced beginnings. Since his solo ca-reer, which produced many criticallyacclaimed albums, Sylvian has steeredclear of commercial pop radio withmoody jazz and world music fused withrock and this is no exception. Withsongs ranging from 45 seconds to 7minutes in length, many of which areinstrumental, R.T.C. is a refreshingchange of pace and is starting to do wellat retail and alternative radio. PocketFull Of Change and Blackwater are twovery strong cuts from this inventivequartet. (CD reviewed) - PF

BOURNE AND MACLEOD - FolkDance And CelebrateAttic - ACD-1314-0

The music industry occasionally castsup some strange but exoticdelights...presenting Bill Bourne andAlan MacLeod. These Juno Awardwinners are one of the first signings toAttic's new World Beat label and aresure to attract a strong audience withtheir brand of Celtic -Blues. Bourne andMacLeod started playing together overten years ago in the Tannahill Weaversand after leaving that, Bourne tooksome time off to work a gold claim heowns before re -uniting with MacLeod torecord this album. The two have bothstruck gold with this invigorating collec-tion of folk -blues spiced with a taste ofthe Scottish highlands. Bourne is agreat story -teller and his voice is a mixof Tom Waits and John Hiatt. MacLeodis a master of the warpipes, as shownon Riding Mountain/Hare '0 The Dug,which he wrote with Ian MacLeod. Self -produced by Bourne and MacLeod, thisalbum should receive plenty of airplaywith strong cuts like Tumblin' Down,House and the enchanting Trust inLove. (CD reviewed) -PF

VICTORIA WILSON -JAMES -DancePerseveranceEpic EK 46853-H

Having come to our attention by way ofSoul II Soul, this beautiful and talentedsinger Is out on her own now with adance -oriented package produced byJazzie B and Mike McEvoy. All tracksare co -written by Victoria, and shouldsee airplay on CHR and in the danceclubs. Watch for the first single,Through, an infectious dance numberthat shows her obvious influences. OneWorld is quite strong, but, Woman OfColours is the real catch that will keepyou coming back for more and more.(CD reviewed) - PF

BILLY SQUIERCreatures Of HabitCapitol - C2 94303-F

A solid production from Squier and co-producer Godfrey Diamond. Upfrontguitars that are in your face and ofcourse Squier's bone -dry vocals. Thefirst single , She Goes Down, is un-doubtedly quite suggestive, outsnorting his first major hit , TheStroke. The album should be quiteaccessible to AOR however, if there isa downfall here it would have to beSquier's shallow lyrics. He doesn'tseem to have much to say with most ofthe lyrics being somewhat generic anddeal with everyday stories that have allbeen told before. Highlights to checkinclude Young At Heart which is a full -out kick ass rocker as well as NervesOn Ice which Stroke fans will enjoy. Onthe whole, this is not a bad effort but itwon't win any awards. -RW

GEORGE STRAIT -CountryChili Of An Early FallMCA - MCAD-10204-J

is the mark of a seasoned per-former. George Strait knows his wayaround a song and how to pick goodones. This collection was written by abevy of country composers and Straitputs everyone in their best possiblelight. Especially good are Floyd Jen-kins' Home In San Antone as well as thebeautiful ballad, If I Know Me, pennedby Dean Dillon and Pam Belford. Thetitle track is of particular notice and is a

good ol', go-down-drinkin', hurtin' tune. The album was recorded on EmeraldStudio's 32 track digital board with pro-duction credits and kudos to JimmyBowen and George Strait. A solid effortby one of country music's finest.(CD reviewed) -RW

BULLET BOYS - Hard RockFreak ShowWarner CD -26168-P

Lovers of hard -rock ballads will have tolook elsewhere as this, the Bullet Boys'newest release, is a rip-roaring blastfrom start to finish. This freak showstarts off with Hell Yeah!, picking upwhere Van Haien left off years ago.Mick Sweda is an up and coming guitarhero while Marq Torien's vocals areraw and electric, even if they are out ofkey at times. Say Your Prayers and DoMe Raw show the Boys' writingprowess while Tom Waits' Hang On St.Christopher, and the blues standardTalk To Your Daughter are well donecovers. Huge is an instrumental thatasks the musical question Do you Havethe Balls? Produced by TedTempleman. (CD reviewed) -PF

THE HORSE FLIES -RockGravity DanceMCA - MCAD-10176-J

One of the more interesting bandsaround these days, The Horse Fliesoffer up an eclectic blend of pop, jazzand even cajun to create a slightlypsychotic musical event. Produced byHilton Rosenthal, this album is slightlyreminiscent of latter-day King Crimsonat times with songtitles like Road Kill,Life Is A Rubber Rope and I Need APlastic Bag (To Keep My Brains In)summing up the general mood. This isstrange and Inventive stuff that couldsee play on college radio or possiblyAOR, so look for it in your grocer'sfreezer. (CD reviewed) - PF

ATI has been active in the marketing ofcountry music since 1987 and has launched thecareers of several Calgary artists includingMyrol & Myrol, Janan Frances, Bill Blayney,Karen Cunningham, and Bob E. New Marigold sessionfor Carol MedinaBeing a 24 -year stock broker executiveassistant, doesn't leave too much time for a re-cording profession, let alone a tour ofYugoslavia, but Carol Medina has managed allthree. The Marigold recording artist has expe-

41) rienced A/C chart success with her previous re-leases; Tears I Cry and So Good For You, and is

back in Rich Dodson's Marigold studiosputting the finishing touches on a new release.

Madina, a proud Croation, touredYugoslavia in mid -February, "a really great op-portunity for me to experience what is happen-ing over there, both politically and musically,"she enthuses. Medina was asked by TonyKikas, a Canadian songwriter, who is alsoCroation, to sing one of his songs, Left Me ForAnother (English translation) at the GoldenPalm Concert, a national musical event inYugoslavia. Medina had first met Kikas in1988 at a Croation function in Toronto. He wasimpressed with her voice and asked if shewould sing a song he had written for a contestat Roy Thomson Hall. She agreed and won forBest Voice.

Having a Canadian recording artist per-form at a Yugoslavian national event, particu-larly one who spoke their language, turned intoa media extravaganza for Medina. She wasfeatured in local newspapers and photo/newsmagazines that put her on the same footing asinternationally -acclaimed recording/film stars, including Madonna.

Medina's new release, Wait Till My HeartFinds Out, was co -written by James Collins andDon Breathaupt. The latter is the husband ofRilcici Rumball, who is currently on release withher Marigold single, Once More With Feeling.Rumball also sings background vocals onMedina's new release that features thetaunt-ing sax of Michael Massaro. Medina is also

working on a dance release of a '70s classic.

Carol Medina with James Collins, who co -wroteCarol's new single Walt TIII My Heart Finds Out.
