Fr Hartford’s Reflection
It is with Great Joy that we prepare to celebrate the
sacrifice of the Holy Mass as a community once again. Fifty
days after Jesus rose from the dead, we celebrate the
coming of the Holy Spirit on the day of Pentecost.
Pentecost day is the birth of the church and our re-birth, so
to speak, after months of being isolated from each other.
The Catechism tells us that: “On the day of Pentecost,
when the seven weeks of Easter had come to an end,
Christ’s Passover is fulfilled in the outpouring of the Holy
Spirit, manifested, given and communicated as a divine
person: of his fullness, Christ, the Lord, pours out the
Spirit in abundance. “(ccc#731)” The most Holy Trinity is
fully revealed: Father , Son, and Holy Spirit. This reveals to
us that God is not alone and isolated, closed up within
himself. But that God is an eternal exchange of the love,
and that love, in the person of the Holy Spirit, is now
communicated to us through the sacraments of the church.
Through this outpouring of his eternal love, through
the holy Spirit, that God has manifested to the world: the
church. “The gift of the Spirit ushers in a new era in the
dispensation of the mystery’- the age of the church, during
which Christ manifests, makes present and communicates
his work of salvation through the liturgy of his church,
until he comes. “(ccc# 1076)” Jesus shares his risen life
with his church and communicates it to us through the
sacraments.
What great joy it is to once again gather as God’s
community, our hearts and our lives, and entering into the
great mystery of our God. Being nourished by his word
and receiving him in the most Holy Eucharist, so that we
can bear witness to the new life in the Spirit. It is truly the
Good News that we need to hear in these uncertain times.
Christ is with us and will accompany us through this time,
until he comes again.
Notice of safety requirements during Phase 1
The Governor has cleared us to begin the opening phase of re-
opening our churches. Bishop McManus has approved phase one of the
re-opening with strict guidelines for safety. We are preparing the church
and making it as safe as possible for our return. Masses are to begin on
Pentecost weekend, May 30th-31st, at their regular times. Weekday
Masses to begin, Monday June 1st, at the regular time.
Here is an overview of what to expect, so you can decide if you are
comfortable to return. I caution you that a safe return does not mean
you must return. Those of advanced age or with medical
conditions may and should remain home. The Bishop has
lifted the obligation to attend Mass until December 31st,
2020.
