Today’s Sermons - May 29th
AM – If I Be Lifted Up, Aubrey Johnson
PM – Phil Baus
T he United States of America is more fragmented today than at any time
since the eve of the American Civil War. The nation is divided along cul-
tural, political, economic and demographic lines. These divisions all affect
the opportunities and challenges we face in doing the Lord’s work.
The division of the country into “Red States” and “Blue States” is more than a
shorthand way of describing political choices. Although Southern states often re-
flect traditional views in religion and morality, the Northeastern ad Pacific states
seem more in alignment with the secular mindset of Western Europe. This fault
line runs through the Midwestern and Mountain states.
Our youth, being immersed in secular media, often have views reflecting New
York and Los Angles more than Nashville or Dallas
The erosion of biblical influence has changed our society’s view of marriage and
the home. While same-sex marriage has been enacted by judicial imposition, the
Supreme Court has merely gotten at the front of a massive cultural shift.
Although the acceptance of homosexual unions is the current sign of a changed
view of marriage, our culture abandoned a biblical definition of marriage decades
ago. In 1969, California became the first state to enact “no-fault divorce”. Other
states quickly followed suit. Today, marriage is an arrangement either party at
any time may terminate for any reason - not a legally binding commitment. (cont.)
Our Post-Christian Culture Greg Tidwell, Gospel Advocate Editor
Our Post-Christian Culture (continued)
The widening acceptance of divorce for any reason among our congregations reflects an indifferent view concerning
the biblical teaching on the nature of marriage. Further, this trend has extended to acceptance of couples living to-
gether outside of marriage. According to Pew Research, 4 percent of members of the churches of Christ are living with
a partner without being married.
The same downward spiral of compromise leading Christians to accept immorality among heterosexual couples will
open the door of acceptance to homosexual relations as well. How careful will we be to avoid offending a same-sex
couple who visits with us? Will we embrace them as part of our church family and celebrate the adoption of their chil-
dren? The muted voice with which we have addressed heterosexual sin raises doubts as to our resolve in addressing
homosexual sin once it is embraced by our society.
However, at what point does our acceptance of those involved in unbiblical sexual relations become complicity with
ungodliness? Facing this challenge today, we will increasingly face it in the years to come.
I cannot imagine one day, one hour, or even one mo-
ment outside the grace and love of the Lord Jesus
Christ. To be outside of the grace of the Lord Jesus is
to be lost in sin and without hope of everlasting life. I
wouldn’t want to put my soul at risk, even for a moment.
Yet I see countless people at risk of losing their souls each
day. Without the grace of God, they have no hope
(Ephesians 2:11-12). They desperately need the gospel
with all its power to save. Promising them hope without
the truth is but to deceive them, and suggesting they
have life without faith or obedience is cruel. We need the
Lord and His word!
The Lord Jesus Christ “gave Himself for our sins so that He
might rescue us from this present evil age, according to
the will of our God and Father, to whom be the glory for-
evermore. Amen” (Galatians 1:4-5). No other sacrifice
could have atoned for our sins (Hebrews 10:4). He was
the perfect sacrifice for all time, and no other is needed
for our eternal salvation (Hebrews 9:11-12).
Many will be lost on the day of Judgment, because they
do not know God or because they have not obeyed the
gospel of our Lord Jesus (2 Thessalonians 1:7-10). Our
task at SEARCH is to give them what they need the most:
the Lord’s gospel truth wrapped in love. We must share
the gospel with everyone who will hear. To get the gospel
to the most people, the most often, and in the most plac-
es requires mass media. We must reach the 322 million
souls of America and the 7.3 billion souls of the world.
According to the CIA's World Fact Book, there will be
360,000 births and 151,600 deaths today. On average,
105 people will die and face eternity each minute. Our
task is not done until every soul hears the gospel.

Recognizing the need to speak the truth in love,
we must be sure we get around to speaking the truth.
