Oxide Gallery has a freshcrop of art going up intime for its upcoming

gallery night. More than 50local artists exhibit in the prin-cipal exhibit at the downtowngallery, and local painter MaryStrangeblossom Morris nabbedthe featured show with a collec-tion of her evocative, surrealistwork.

The main show draws from

local photographers, painters, sculptors, jewelers and wood-workers.

Photographer Owen Rich-ards trained his lens on thehigh heels of a subject he titledHeather. The concert steps andthe sheen of the snakeskinshoes evoke Cinderella, but thered markings — either a tattooor the flourish of boredom froma marker — bring you back tothe present. PhotographerMonte Borders makes the skyan otherworldly blue and icesout the trees in his altered land-scape, Wetlands.

Painters Faith Scott Jessup

and Jacque Forsher return toOxide with their signature style— Forsher incorporates colorand perspective to a dramaticresult in Rue’s View, whileJessup brings her still-lifepaintings to dream-state vivid-ness by setting them againagainst a dark field, as in Tulips& Bumblebee.

Morris creates visual interestby carefully lighting her sub-jects and by thrusting theminto a realm that is confined, visually, to hallucination. InDivine Portal, the subject is awoman with a door and key-hole in the side of her head. A

Chapter 19 of Genesis proba-bly isn’t known for getting biglaughs. Denton actor-cum-playwright Kevin Wickershamdidn’t shrink from the chal-lenge in drafting and produc-ing his original play: GomorrahGo Go: A Perversion in TwoActs.

Genesis 19 is a famous OldTestament chapter about aman named Lot, who decidesto let two angels lodge withhim for an evening at his homein Gomorrah. A mob of mencome a-knocking, insisting thatLot hand over his visitors forpunishment by gang rape.

Lot offers up his virgindaughters to the angry mob inthe angels’ place. Lot resists, and the angels reward him bytaking Lot and his clan out ofthe city just in time to escapeGod’s wrath.

“A couple of years ago,”Wickersham said, “I saw thisreally funny Internet clip aboutGenesis 19, and at the end ofthe clip, it said something like:‘No, seriously, this really hap-pen in Genesis 19.’ I thought:‘Hmmm. Why not take thischapter and sprinkle it with gaystuff and caca jokes?’”

Wickersham also directs theR-rated comedy, which openstoday at Art Six Coffee House.

“I literally, in the back of myhead as I was writing anddirecting this, thought that thisis a slap in the face to safe the-ater,” Wickersham said.

Joshua Scott Hancock ofDenton-based Fight Boy Thea-tre agreed it’s “a slap in the faceto safe theater,” but said there’s

The comedy isn’t suitable forchildren.

The script uses rough lan-guage, the story deals withnearly a full spectrum of sexu-alities, and David Wickersham,Kevin’s brother and an actor, said his part as Archie includeda burlesque dance number.

“When I first found out thatmy character was involved inan all-male burlesque se-quence, I was like, you’ve got tobe comfortable with your ownsexuality and ask, ‘Am I OKwith touching these sexydudes?’ Yeah, I’m OK with it,”David Wickersham said.

more to it than that.“As the artistic director, I

wouldn’t do this if it were justthat,” Hancock said. “It hasmerit, and it has a message. Ithas a message about hypocrisy.”

The independent theatercompany jumped on producingthe project right away, he said.

Wickersham’s script uses theGenesis chapter as the founda-tion for the play. He embel-lished two characters: God andthe Archangel.

“God is running this uni-verse, but he doesn’t want to bethere,” he said. “In one scene,he’s running things whilepainting his toenails. Thenthere’s Archie [the archangel],who is completely frustrated.I’ve got a chorus of Sodomites, who are a loopy, horny bunch, two sexy dude angels,” as wellas Lot, his daughters and hisangry wife.

appeared, but they still look gor-geous and sexy thanks to cos-tume designer Patricia Field’srevolving array of outlandishbut consistently glamorous cre-ations.

In this go-around, the sceneschange quickly and often forextreme contrasts, allowingField and her army of designersto create four new outfits everytime the four transform them-selves, whether at a Connecticutwedding, in the desert or at anAbu Dhabi hotel pool.

Michael Patrick King returnsas director, having also pro-duced and written theunwieldy script filled with badpuns and awkward wordplay. But even though King lets hisindividual scenes run on too

long, he shows a Rob Marshall-like flair for choreographingdistaff musical scenes, as thefilm’s most vibrant set piecescome when a white-tuxedoedchorus sings show tunes beforea wedding and later when thefour women take over an AbuDhabi karaoke bar with theircloying take on “I Am Woman.”

In between, the slight storypicks up Carrie and Big (ChrisNoth) in the second year oftheir now settled-down mar-riage. The others have their ownconcerns, but Samantha provesa heroine when she arranges foran expenses-paid trip for every-one to Abu Dhabi, therebyallowing director King to milkthe obvious cultural clashes.

He shamelessly resorts to

tasteless stereotypes and con-trivances, as various dramasplay out, with relationships, marriages and friendships test-ed, whether by sexy nannies, old boyfriends or midnighttrysts on the beach.

King slots in several eye-catching cameos, includingPenelope Cruz, Miley Cyrusand Texas stand-up comic RonWhite. But, in the oddest bit ofcinema seen recently, LizaMinnelli performs the weddingrites before belting out her ownstylized rendition of “SingleLadies.”

COVER STORY

By Ellen Ritscher SackettStaff Writer

Last year’s Dylanfest was so suc-cessful that Tex Zimmerman andHis All Star Revue are making it

an annual event. This year, the headliner and his bud-

dies have organized two concerts thatcelebrate the music of Bob Dylan whilebenefiting Instruments of Change, acharity that provides musical instru-ments and training to at-risk children.

Zimmerman — a.k.a. Mike Steinel, ajazz trumpet professor at the Universityof North Texas — is one of the foundersof Instruments of Change, which cur-rently has projects in South Africa, NewOrleans and South Africa.

“All three of these locations havetremendous need of instruments and

materials. I suspect that there are clos-ets in all of Denton that have unusedinstruments,” said Steinel, who askedthat people consider making donationsto the organization for distribution.

Steinel and his wife, Beverly Hoch, asoprano and a Texas Woman’s Universitymusic professor, made their first Instru-

ments of Change trip to Kimberley,South Africa, two years ago with 300donated instruments and a team of 10teachers.

“Faced with the prospect of taking 10guitars to Africa without a teacher, Ibegan to relearn the guitar,” said Steinel.

He found a songbook in one of theguitar cases with the words to “Blowin’in the Wind.”

“I was struck by its simple beauty andpower,” he said, and thus began to delveinto Dylan’s music, his career and hisspiritual journey to Christianity.

Steinel came to the conclusion thatDylan is the most important pop musi-cian and composer of the last 50 years.

“He was the first [to] fuse the seriouspoetry of a beat generation with rock ’n’roll. He redefined pop singing, pavingthe way for punk and grunge,” he said.“He was the first pop artist of significanceto be equal parts composer and singer.”

Steinel originally wanted to call theband Zimmerman, a nod to Bob Dylan’sbirth name, Robert Allen Zimmerman.

He discovered there was a Dylan coverband called Zimmerman already, buthe didn’t want to give up the nameentirely. Eventually, Texas Zimmermanand His All Star Revue came to mind.

“We were doing, in a way, an old-fashioned review with a variety of per-formers,” said Steinel.

“It was all supposed to be one day, then two, adding the gospel concert.Long story short, it was so much funthat even an hour after the last note, Iwas already, in my mind, planning thenext Dylanfest.”

Steinel recruited some of the top areamusicians to form the backup band.

“I sought out singers who I knewwere good enough to do any style, thena rhythm section,” he said.

The All Star band that will be per-forming on both concerts includesvocalists Rosana and Gary Eckert andGale Cruz, guitarist Paul Metzger, bassist Jeffry Eckels and drummerStockton Helbing. Special guestsinclude guitarist Thad Bonduris, clar-

The Sunday night concert will featureDylan’s gospel music.

“Dylan’s music brims with biblical ref-

erences and what many, in retrospect, identify as theological messages fromthe earliest years,” said Steinel. “Withthat in mind, we are including songssuch as ‘Blowin’ in the Wind,’ ‘TheTimes They Are A-Changin’’ and ‘Whenthe Ship Comes In.’”

Steinel also arranged three songs forchoir and has recruited voices from “a

broad spectrum of the Denton musiccommunity.”

On Monday, he said, “We’re doing abroad cross-section of his music” fromDylan’s earliest album in 1961 to hismore current music. The styles rangefrom hard rock to folk to country with “ajazz tinge,” said Steinel.

“Because we’re all jazz musicians, itcomes out sort of jazzy,” he said.

Denton City Council member PeteKamp will also be making a specialappearance during the concert onMonday night, Steinel said.

“She’s a good gal. She’s been part ofDenton a long time,” he said.
