An Easter message from Presiding Bishop Elizabeth Eaton Getting a phone call in the middle of the night is never a good thing. I remember the second time my father had open-heart surgery. It was a long procedure and a difficult one, and after it was done the doctor called us to his office and said, “There’s been some bleeding.

We’ll let you know, but you should go home now and rest.” And so going home that night, I listened for a phone call in the middle of the night and was awakened only to find out it was morning and it was birds singing, not the phone ringing. My father had made it through the night, and in fact he did recover from the surgery. This is the joy we feel at Easter, but magnified. All of the hope that had been dashed on Good Friday, the terrible pressure of grief, the terrible pressure of knowing there was no future in the world, only on Sunday to be greeted not by the ringing of a telephone announcing death but the loud clear singing of alleluias. This is the joy we have, and it’s a promise so strong that even when we do die, even when we do confront death, we have the hope and the assurance of eternal life. Easter makes it possible for us, even at the grave, to sing alleluia. Christ is risen. Alleluia.

Happy Easter, dear church. The Rev. Elizabeth A. Eaton Presiding Bishop Evangelical Lutheran Church in America

Wednesday Prayer Services continue this summer. This will be an opportunity for members to pray for each other every Wednesday from 12:15-1:00pm in the nave. This will run from May 29th – August 28th. Our regular Wednesday schedule will resume on September 4th.

During this summer prayer experience there will be soft music playing in the background as participants will take a prayer guide that will help them pray for St. John’s, pray for the needs of others as the Holy Spirit leads, and reflect upon what God is saying to each person. There will be pages dedicated to embracing A.C.T.S. (Adoration/Praise, Confession, Thanksgiving, Supplication/Intercession). There will also be a sheet containing those members and friends on our church’s prayer list and an opportunity for each participant to lift up prayers for themselves.

This will be a self-led prayerful experience and open to everyone. Please make plans to at least try this unique opportunity to deepen your relationship with God. At 11am there will be a Bible Study in the PLC conference room led by Leslie Connor and John Scherberger.

Endowment Committee The St. John’s Endowment Fund Committee will soon begin taking grant applications for

distribution of the available 2019 Endowment funds. This fund has been established to Engage

God in Our Daily Life by providing funds to worthwhile ministries, most of which are not

directly associated with St. John’s Lutheran Church. God has commanded us to assist in the

well-being of others. From Philippians 2:4 “Let each of you look not only to his own interest,

but also to the interest of others” and Matthew 25:40 “And the King will answer them, “Truly, I

say to you, as you did it to one of the least of these my brothers, you did it to me”.

In the recent past, distributions have been granted to groups such as Service Dog Institute of

SC, Boy Scouts, Hope Ranch, St. Luke’s Free Medical Clinic, Greater Spartanburg Ministries

and Divinity Ministries to name a few. In each of these cases, money from the St. John’s

Endowment fund helps to support those in need and groups dedicated to supporting the

betterment of others.

The availability of this grant is spread by word of mouth. If you know of a group who may be

interested in applying, please let them know that the application will be available on St. John’s

website or in our church office beginning June 1st. This year’s committee is Tricia Boyd, Jill

Henley, Kathie McKenzie, Bob Pettis, Larry White and Pastor Mike.

St. John's has an opportunity to offer flu shots by a local pharmacist on Sunday's between services! If we can get enough interest it will be sometime during the months of October or November. The pharmacy would take care of not only giving the injections, but filing insurance or Medicare. We will need a rough headcount no later than June 15th so that the pharmacy knows how many vaccines to order. Please contact Judy Drake at 864-237-3113 or the church secretary at 864-583-8167 if you are interested in this. When calling, please specify your age (there is a different vaccine for seniors).

The playground turf is COMPLETE and it created a larger playing space in addition to one with greater usability for adults too as fun ideas including an herb garden and moveable seating and tables are on the horizon! Thanks to all of this rain, we’ve already been able to examine that the drainage in this area is dramatically improved with zero water collecting/remaining in the space now! Not to mention the surface of the turf is dry enough to play-on within 30 minutes of a rain! Accidental fall to ground ratio is also now up to code. Sand infill was used as an alternative to recycled tire/rubber thanks to our environmentally-conscious partnership with Jonathan Marcy with Meaning2Play LLC.

Christian Education What happened in the moments/days following the resurrection? Who saw Jesus

walk the earth again following the crucifixion? What directives did Jesus give between resurrection and ascension? These are the issues that will be discussed in Martin’s Table in the last session of this Sunday School year (4/28/19 thru 5/26/19). Benji Mills will lead this class using video and class discussion. How do we pray? Is there a right way? What if we don't like to pray? Join the Living the Christian Life class for a broad-ranging look at prayer traditions, hard questions, familiar and unconventional ways to pray, and discussion that will help

deepen your prayer life regardless of where you are. Meets in the conference room beneath the sanctuary.

The Christian Education Ministry Team at St. John’s is committed to providing members of St. John’s opportunities to learn about Christ’s love in a healthy, loving environment. We also want to take that same healthy, loving environment and use it as outreach to those that may need to hear the word of Christ that are not currently members of St. John’s. Christian Ed would like to introduce Centershot Ministries as an outreach program to seek out and touch youth with the word of Christ by using archery as a tool to draw the youth to St. John’s campus. Think what Upward Ministies has done in our area with youth basketball, soccer and volleyball. Centershot Ministries does the same with archery. From the Centershot web site:

Centershot Ministries (CsM) is a non-denominational outreach program that shares the Gospel of Jesus using the life-skill of archery. CsM does this by partnering and equipping the local church to use this amazing tool to reach the community around it. A core value of CsM is the belief that the best way to reach communities for Jesus is through the local church, and that is why CsM partners with the local church.

It doesn’t matter what type of church you are; big or small, city or country, traditional or contemporary, churches all over the world are using CsM as a tool to grow God’s Kingdom with amazing success. You maybe wondering why using archery as an outreach tool could be a success. Its simple archery levels the playing field. Everyone can shoot archery, from young to old, whole families are coming together to enjoy a skill they can do together.

As you make your way through the website write down your questions and contact us. We will take the time to answer them all. Can you imagine how many families we can help "MAKE CHRIST THE TARGET OF THEIR LIVES!"

This sounds great doesn’t it? How wonderful it is that God has given us a tool to spread His WordN..and get to play with bows and arrows at the same time! The thing is, this cannot happen without a host of volunteers. Opportunities to volunteer will be in advertising, maintaining records, set up/tear down of archery equipment, devotion leaders, working with participants to develop archery skills, providing snacks. If you would like participate, we’ll find a place for you! We will need a solid volunteer list before we make a commitment to establish a Centershot program at St. John’s. There are a couple of good things going here: St. John’s already has a great facility to hold the archery practice/completion in the PLC and archery doesn’t have a “season” like most sports. The season can begin and end at any time the volunteer team would like. If you would like to be a volunteer for Centershot, please contact Benji Mills at (864) 477-9112 or email at [email protected].

A Blast from the Past..History in Action May 2019

By Judy Lybrand

In 1977 our congregation was preparing to expand our staff, adding an associate pastor for the first time. At a special 75th Anniversary Commemorative Service, the congregation was fortunate to hear our founding pastor, Dr. S.T. Hallman, preach once again, as re-enacted by Robert A. Bremer with items taken from Dr. Hallman’s writings. This is from the text of his sermon: Our Church—a leap of faith. On August 22, 1904 my hand was shaking as I signed a note of $1500 for the purchase of a lot with not a penny in the treasuryN. It was my joy to serve for 25 years in Spartanburg. We saw our numbers grow so that by 1925 we numbered 135 in membership. I wish I had time today to share with you some of the individual highlights of the congregation during my time here, but these have all been recorded in the book of heaven. “As the Father has sent me, so send I you.” Woman’s Memorial, now St. John’s Lutheran Church, has always responded to the needs of people. To hear the Good News—you are calling an associate pastor to expand your ministry. Where is the money coming from? I remember that same question when we purchased the lot. Don’t worry. God will provide. To be accepted by God—the cross proclaims that to you visually and as you gather at the Lord’s Table you see and receive His acceptance in actuality. To be organized to serve—the needs of people in your local community and in the world. It was a joy for me to see the day nursery program of the Charles Lea Center meeting here during the week. St. John’s responded to a need of the community. We are all sowers of the seed. The soil and the seed are nurtured by the Holy Spirit and God’s word does not return void. In all my years of ministry, 1868-1926, 58 years to be exact, I stood assured of one thing. If only one person had been moved to come closer to God and a member of His kingdom, then my ministry was successful. God has called each one of us—not to be successful, but to be faithful. St. John’s Lutheran Church, God’s blessings on 75 years of ministry. “As the Father has sent me, even so send I you.” We are all fellow ministers and sojourners in this world as witnesses to God’s love. Our message is the same—a changeless Christ to a changing world in changing forms of ministry. God is here. Peace in His name. Amen. St. John’s has grown, yet remained faithful to our original call. We are preparing to call a new associate pastor, and this will lead us into more growth. Let us always keep our eyes on our changeless God as we adapt to the changing world.

Social Ministry The Social Ministry Committee meets at 3:00 p.m. on the second Sunday of each month in the

PLC Senior Room. Please join us if you are interested in participating in community outreach.

BACKPACK BUDDIES will be furnishing weekend snacks/meals

for about 140 students from low-income families through the

month of May until the close of the school year. Any donations

of suitable items (see the list of food items on the bulletin board

in the Fellowship Hall) will be greatly appreciated by these

students who typically have insufficient food through the

weekends. Thanks for your compassionate donations.

Social Ministry is collecting Education Box Tops for donation to the McCarthy Teszler School so the school can obtain needed supplies. You can place those box tops in the small plastic sandwich bag on the bulletin board on the wall in the Fellowship Hall. Thanks!

A BIG THANK YOU for the generous donations of shampoo, body lotions, and soap in the BINGO collection box! These items make great prizes for BINGO night at Mountainview Nursing Home which happens the second Thursday of each month at 6:30 p.m. There are about 16-20 residents that come to play and win prizes and they really enjoy that extra pampering by using these nice, fragrant products. There is always a continued need for prize items such as body wash, cologne, stretch bracelets, lap blankets, jewelry, large print word search books, just to name a few suggestions. You'll find a complete list of suitable items on the bulletin board

near the bingo collection box in the Fellowship Hall. Don't forgetN. Any church member can come to Mountainview on a bingo night and join Social Ministry in assisting residents with their bingo buttons and cards.

Contact Luann Bryant or Brenda Ellison if you'd like to help.
