The Rocky Hock Anchor

“I thank God, whom I serve with a clear conscience the way my forefathers did, as I constantly

remember you in my prayers night and day, longing to see you, even as I recall your tears, so that I may

be filled with joy. For I am mindful of the sincere faith within you, which first dwelt in your

grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice, and I am sure that it is in you as well. For this reason I

remind you to kindle afresh the gift of God which is in you through the laying on of my hands. For God

has not given us a spirit of timidity, but of power and love and discipline.” (II Timothy 1:3-7)

The call of God to salvation is the greatest experience life has to offer. It is the gift of His mercy

through grace into His perfect love. It is the power of God that raises us to new, eternal life. We escape the

wrath of His holiness which He is withholding until the judgment at death. We are now timeless, immortal,

and bound eternally by His resurrection Spirit kept for our crown of righteousness to and for His glory.

God adds through Paul’s pen the beauty and power of faithful grandmothers and mothers in His

process of sanctification. It is biblically confirmed that the call of the mother is to be a homemaker. Her first

and most important responsibility is to her Lord in the home as a representation, a model of the Lord’s church,

the body of the Spirit. Her devotion to her husband, her children’s father, has immense and immeasurable

influence on the development of their character and worldview. It nurtures humility and commitment into the

fabric of their consciousness and lives. Paul refers to Timothy’s upbringing: a godly grandmother and a godly

mother. Faith is the gift of God that is also passed on through obedience in our God given roles. Lois, a godly

mother, becomes a godly grandmother and faith is taught to each generation. Paul says to Timothy that

salvation is God’s gift but it needs and demands godly nurture of a mother. It’s not a timid spirit he says, but a

spirit of power, love, and discipline.

I thank God for the grandmothers and mothers of Rocky Hock, who put aside personal goals and

worldly dreams to fulfill the highest call of a woman, a mother and homemaker. I regularly draw from the

reservoir of endless lessons taught me by my mother. My mother, also named Eunice, was a quiet and

reserved spirit, but more powerful than those of endless words and activities. She was a prayer warrior who

trusted the Lord in everything she did. She constantly spoke of God’s mighty blessings on her even in her

struggles and weakening old age. She never grumbled or complained, she was a person of sincere faith, as

Paul said of Timothy’s mother Eunice. Thank you, Mom, for teaching me and molding me with strong

character and convictions. Thank you for teaching me to act and not react in life’s ups and downs, teaching

me to be consistently faithful to the Lord. Thank you for loving when you’re weren’t being loved as you

deserved to be by me. Thank you for showing me that God has a plan and His way is unstoppable. I love you,

Mom. And to my wife, the perfect mother to our children, thank you for your unwavering love, endless work

because of my often absence in ministry, and to the fantastic nurturing of Eric and Jessica. They would not be

who they are without you. Thank you for your quiet, humble, but powerful and strong godly spirit. You’re

my girl; you’ll always be my girl! (Borrowed that line from Forrest Gump!)

So as for you and other mothers that have gone on before us, I pray that as

you participate in the great cloud of witnesses the book of Hebrews speaks about,

you’ll pray that I’ll be faithful to the end! I love you, Mom! And I love the

moms of RHBC! Happy Mother’s Day, ladies! See you in worship!

Nonstop Praying

“Pray constantly.” (1 Thessalonians 5: 17)

Focused prayer is good. Time set aside to be with your heavenly Father is essential, pouring out our

hearts to Him and hearing from Him. But prayer is not meant to be limited to particular times and locations.

It’s meant to be as constant as breathing. It’s meant to occur throughout our day. It’s meant to be an ongoing

conversation where we ask for His assistance and look and listen for His help and leading.

Our relationship with God runs on prayer. It’s the way we communicate with God who is so close to

us He has taken up residence inside of us: “But the counselor, the Holy Spirit – the Father will send Him in

My name – will teach you all things and remind you everything I have told you” (John 14:26). Prayer is at the

center of our Christian experience. It is spiritual breathing for us.

Whenever we think of prayer primarily as something we must do, as an obligation, as a religious duty,

we err. We miss the whole point. We fail to see that communion with God is not only our purpose but also

our greatest pleasure and privilege. The reality is, we are dependent creatures who are constantly in need, and

prayer is the only way God meets our needs. A lot of things won’t happen in your life or in your relationship

with Him apart from prayer. So learn to pray constantly.

Is prayer always happening in your life? It should be constant throughout your day. There’s no better

way to live.

Do We Care About Reaching the Lost?

We must have passionate outreach. The church, more than any other institution in the world, does not exist

solely for the sake of its membership. Do we want to be a comfortable church or a Great Commission church? The

church exists to be the salt of the earth, the light of the world, the redeeming factor in a dying society. Everything

we do must be for the purpose of reaching others for Jesus Christ. George Barna wrote about growing churches:

“These were people who were passionate about outreach . . . They saw every event in their lives as having a hand

in better enabling them to reach others for Christ. They looked upon life as a opportunity to serve God.” God has

brought together those of us who love Him and love lost souls in order to reach our world for Christ. To reach our

world for Jesus, we must have a passion, an overwhelming desire to see persons come to a saving knowledge of the

Lord.

Passionate outreach means public proclamation. The Gospel must be the first priority in all we do to reach

people for Jesus Christ. The Gospel is to be studied in Bible study, proclaimed in regular worship services, and

shared outside the church. Peter and the other apostles were committed to the public proclamation of the Gospel.

They seized every opportunity they could. We see in Acts 5: 25, that even after they were arrested and jailed, they

spoke boldly in the temple in the Lord’s name. Proclaiming the good news of Jesus Christ must be our passionate

aim if we seek to grow as a church. When we have trails and tribulations, we need to stand up for Jesus Christ,

even in these times.

Passionate Outreach means vital visitation. The apostles were committed to reaching people in their homes

as well as by public proclamation (Acts 5: 42). Visitation is vital to the growth of the church. It is important for

pastors, deacons, and church members to engage in outreach visitation. Good visitation means finding good

prospects (through new residents, prospect forms, telephone calls, door-to-door drop by visits, and special events).

A church that wants to grow will give priority to visitation.

Passionate outreach means enthusiastic evangelism. Our commitment to evangelize the lost is wavering.

The apostles let nothing stand in their way of witnessing to the lost people. We have lost people and families in the

world today that don’t even open their Bibles on a daily basis. One poll showed that 93 percent of Americans have

a Bible in their home, but only 12 percent read it daily. Less than one third knew the expression “God helps those

who help themselves” is not in the Bible. Less than half knew Jonah is a book in the Bible.

The church that seeks to be effective in evangelism must come to grips with the mentality of these people.

We need to make every effort to reach them (it may call for drastic changes in some of our methods). It will take

evangelistic training. It will take many different approaches, such as door-to-door, life-style, and hospitality

evangelism (having things in our homes, such as prayer cottages, and our church that are not threatening). A

church seeking to grow must have an enthusiastic commitment to ongoing evangelism. Above all, we must have

patience with people.

Passionate outreach means meaningful ministry and missions. The early church did its outreach within the

framework of meaningful ministry and missions (Acts 2: 45; 4: 32). One reason the apostles were so flexible in

their ministry is because they knew that their overall mission was to preach Christ and make disciples. They

accepted suffering as a part of that ministry (Acts 5: 41 - 42). Like the disciples, our commitment to ministry and

missions will impact our community for Christ. Through meaningful ministries, we communicate that we care. A

close correlation exists between our growth and our commitment to a needy world. Our primary concern should

not be growth. It should be missions and ministry for Christ. When we take care of ministering God’s Word, He

takes care of our growth. The growth of a plant depends on three things—the seed, the soil, and the seasons.

Missions and ministry create a climate in the church that makes growth possible. If we are to be passionate in our

outreach, we must be involved in life-changing ministries that will touch lives and make a difference. May God

give us a passion that will not die, and a desire that will be fueled by our passion for serving the Lord here at

RHBC.
