Wisdom for Endings and Beginnings

As we celebrate confirmation and graduation, we celebrate a time of endings and beginnings. In preparation for the begin-nings, a person hopes to be prepared to begin something new. As we begin something new, there are always people offering us words of advise and counsel. While we usually brush these words aside, their words should be given the full-est of reflection and consideration. The worst way to begin something is to begin by thinking we know it all. Not wanting to break tradition, I would like to share some words of wisdom found in the Apocrypha. The Apocrypha contains those books written during the inter-testamental peri-od. These books are not included in the Old Testament Can-on, but Luther encouraged the reading of the books for their wisdom and historical value. I have found two books of wis-dom to have great insight into human nature and to be most instructional. I would like to share some excerpts from one of them with our confirmands and graduates. These are taken from the Book of Sirach. (The New Oxford Annotated Bible – RSV – Oxford University Press 1973)

As you begin new things there are always frustrations that will often lead to anger. In those times, consider this: “Unrighteous anger cannot be justified, for a man’s anger tips the scale to his ruin. A patient man will endure until the right moment, and then joy will burst forth for him.” 1:22-23 As you begin new things there are many changes that you will need to make. As you deal with these changes, con-sider this: “Accept whatever is brought upon you, and in changes that humble you be patient. For gold is tested in the fire, and acceptable men in the furnace of humiliation. Trust in God, and he will help you.” 2:4-6 In beginning something new, we usually want to impress and show others what we can do, for such a desire there are wise words to be considered: “The kiln tests the potter’s vessels; so the test of a man is in his reasoning. wise. If you love to listen you will gain knowledge, and if you incline your ear you will become wise. Stand in the as-sembly of the elders. Who is wise? Cleave to him. Be ready to listen to eve-ry narrative, and do not let a wise prov-erb escape you. If you see an intelli-gent man, visit him early; let your foot wear out his doorstep. Reflect on the statutes of the Lord, and mediate at all times on His commandments. It is He who will give insight to your mind, and your desire for wisdom will be granted.” 6:32—37.

With the completion of any period of education or instruction there comes a confidence. This confi-dence can inspire thanksgiving to God for the learning and the glorification of God through the use of the knowledge gained. Often this confi-dence leads some people to become prideful and arrogant. As new creations in Jesus Christ, this is not our way, consider these words as we live out our faith day by day. 1. The success of a man is in the hands of

the Lord” 10:5 “The beginning of man’s pride is to depart from the Lord; for his heart has forsaken his Maker” 10:12 “

2. “Do not say, ‘Who will have power over me?’ for the Lord will surely punish. Do not say, ‘I sinned, and what happened to me?’ for the Lord is slow to anger. Do not be so confident of atonement that you add sin to sin. Do not say ‘His mercy is great, He will forgive the multitude of my sins.’ For both mercy and wrath are with Him and His anger rests on such sinners. Do not delay to turn to the Lord, nor postpone it from day to day; for sud-denly the wrath of the Lord will go forth, and at the time of punishment you will perish.” 5:3--7’

3. “The nobleman, and the judge, and the ruler will be honored, but none of them is greater than the man who fears the Lord.” 10:24

All this wisdom can be summed up in the words of Jesus Christ. His words are wisdom for the beginning of many projects, but they are better used to begin and live each day –“Seek first His Kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things shall be given to you.” Matthew 6:33 May the blessings of our risen Savior, Jesus Christ be upon and with all those who shall be confirmed and those who shall graduate from high school or college.

In Christ’s Service and yours, Pastor Mark W. Love

Kneeler Update & Thanks! The Trustees, along with the greatly appreciated help of some volunteers (Jim Hawke, Ed Mauntler, and Roger Schlade), successfully finished making the much-needed repairs to the kneelers a couple weeks ago. In all, it took nearly 50 man-hours to complete this work. There are 144 separate kneelers, so, although we tried to be very systematic, it is possible that something (e.g. bent bracket or missing rubber stopper) got missed. If you find a kneeler that was missed, please let one of the Ushers or Trustees know about it so it can be promptly fixed.

As a gentle and charitable reminder to all parishioners: the kneelers are for kneeling only. They are not designed to be used as foot rests or for pushing off of with your legs. Many kneelers had brackets that were aggressively warped, because they are not meant to stand up to forces other than the kneelers resting on them. Please be mindful of how you are treating the kneelers so that they do not need to be replaced ( = money $$).

Respectfully in the Lord, The Trustees ~ Oh come, let us worship and bow down; let us kneel before the LORD, our Maker! Ps. 95:6

LUTHERAN WOMEN’S MISSIONARY LEAGUE MITES and MISSIONS

“THE HEART…of the giver makes the gift dear and precious” a quote from Dr. Martin Luther. This is certainly true of those who faithfully and generously contribute to LWML Mite offerings. We have been informed that receipts to fund the 2016-2018 LWML Ohio District Mite Goal of $205,000 were short. Although there was a shortage, the LWML Ohio District was able to fund all of the grants selected for the biennium and send 25% of mites received to help fund the national LWML’s grants. We continue to “Serve the Lord with Gladness” and give all praise and thanks to God for blessing your Mite gifts and thankfully acknowledge your offerings for the work and mission of the Lutheran Women’s Missionary League. Mites in April totaled $72.14. Your gifts of coins, quiet money or a check (payable to Trinity LWML) will enable the LWML to continue to reach out locally and to all areas of the world. LWML Mite Sunday is May 20, 2018. Place your gifts into the large Mite Box located in the narthex or near the gym door at any time. Additional Mite Boxes and offering envelopes are available near the large Mite Box. Your Mite gifts and prayers support the following mission:

LUTHERAN CHILDREN’S BOOKS for FAMILIES WORLDWIDE

A precious memory is sharing our faith with a child on our lap and reading a book about Jesus. The Lutheran Heritage Foundation (LHF) has found that there are not enough Lutheran children’s books written in the language of children living in Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, China, and Mongolia. New Christians, especially Christian parents, are eager to pass along their faith to their children. Children’s books, such as A Child’s Garden of Bible Stories, God’s Word for You, and Bible Stories in Pictures are not available in these languages. For 25 years, Lutheran Heritage Foundation has fulfilled its mission in translating, publishing, and distributing Lutheran books. This Mission Grant will provide Lutheran churches worldwide, missionaries, and families around the globe with 20,000 translated books so that Bible stories will assist with teaching children about God’s gifts and salvation for generations to come. = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = = The Twenty-seventh Biennial LWML OHIO DISTRICT CONVENTION will be held June 22, 23, and 24, 2018 at the Marriott Columbus Northwest, Dublin, Ohio. The convention theme Walk in the Light

is based on 1 John 1:7. The Proclaimer for Friday evenings’ opening worship/communion service and Keynote Speaker on Saturday will be the Rev. Dien Taylor of Redeemer Evangelical Lutheran Church, The Bronx, New York. Pastor Taylor is a talented musician and gifted speaker. The Rev. Ryan Peterson, Campus Pastor at Concordia University, Ann Arbor, Michigan, will lead us in Bible study on Saturday and Sunday. Saturday evening’s banquet and entertainment, servant events, Interest Sessions, business meetings where delegates will elect new officers and select Mission Grants for the 2018-2020 biennium and many other events will round out the convention activities. Elaine Bickel, Millington, Michigan, will be the humorous interrupter. She is the author of curriculum materials for Sunday schools, vacation Bible schools and Lutheran schools. The deadline for registrations is May 15. A one day registration is also available. There is no registration fee required for Friday’s opening worship service and all are invited. Contact Lillian at 419-893-2951 for registration information, see the spring issue of the ODE or go to http://lwmlohio.org. Plan now to experience an LWML Convention. As I write this, we are in the season of Easter, the most holy of times, in my opinion. Christ is risen. He is risen indeed, Alleluia!! It seems we need Christ more than ever these days. He is our strength in times of grief and there seems to be no shortage of that. The past month Ezra Comfort Dog and I comforted a lot of students that have lost classmates due to auto accidents or illness. Among the schools involved were Patrick Henry and Liberty Center High Schools, as well as the upper grades at Kentucky Country Day School in Louisville. I was also able to visit a young girl at St. Lukes Hospital who was having a tonsellectomy. She was pretty nervous about the surgery. I wanted to go in with her but I wasn’t allowed, so my handlers gave her one of my mini stuffies to keep with her. Check out that precious smile! Ezra has been spending more time at the courthouse helping victims. I hear he is doing some really good work there. He is often involved with 4-5 cases a week, in addition to the staff that always look forward to seeing him!! But he took time out to help talk about our ministry to a group of Girl Scouts one evening. Our handlers did a presentation then the girls got to ask questions and, of course, pet us! They were working on their Animal Helpers Badge!

The highlight of the month was our LCC K-9 Regional Gathering in Louisville, KY. In our region we have Comfort Dogs Mercy, Rosie, Naomi, Ezra and me. It was a day full of training, encouraging devotions from LCC, and of course some play time (my favorite)! The next day Ezra stayed to greet at and attend Our Savior Lutheran Church with Mercy Comfort Dog. Ezra and I took a road trip to join Naomi at Emmanuel-St. Michael Lutheran School in Ft. Wayne, IN. We helped with the chapel message then had plenty of time for loving and petting with the children. Later that day we visited Holy Cross in Ft. Wayne where

they are preparing to get an LCC K-9 Comfort Dog for their church. Some of you might remember Pastor Tom Ahlersmeyer who is now their pastor. National Volunteer Week was in April so my handlers were invited to several events for the work they do with Ezra and I. They went to luncheons for Toledo Children’s Hospital and University of Toledo Medical Center and a dinner for Sunshine Communities. Trinity even received an award from Sunshine for the work we do for them. In case you didn’t know, Deaconness Hibbard does a Bible study for the residents in one of the Sunshine homes and I have been to several events with them. Here’s a picture of the clear glass award! Since we spent a weekend in Louisville with Mercy Comfort Dog, here is her Bible verse: “And he passed in front of Moses, proclaiming, ‘The Lord, the Lord, the compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger, abounding in love and faithfulness.’” In His service, Anna Comfort Dog Psalm 62:8

Dear Trinity Family,

Since psychologists tell us that we need to hear about something at least 6 times before we accept it, I want to touch again on the subject of our children, grandchildren and friends, and their connection to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

The book of Deuteronomy tells us in Chapter 6:6-7, "These commandments that I give you today are to be on your hearts. Impress them on your children. Talk about them when you sit at home and when you walk along the road, when you lie down and when you get up. Tie them as symbols on your hands and bind them on your foreheads. Write them on the door frames of your houses and on your gates."

Now, we've al l learned the commandments that were passed down to us as children and we need to pass them along to our children. Trinity Lutheran School and Sunday School both help to do

this. You all know as well as I do that children don't listen to their parents and grandparents nearly as well as hearing the same thing from teachers or someone else. That's why we have our Christian Day School and Sunday School and the dedicated teachers. This is where they learn about the meaning of what is needed for our saving grace and salvation. Our teaching at home is very important as well, but children need to hear about God from more than just us.

A quote from Ralph Waldo Emerson says: "What lies behind and what lies ahead of you pales with what lies within you." We want our children to have Christ "within them" and they will receive that gift in our school and Sunday School.

God bless you for ensuring that our children will grow up knowing the love of God and the saving grace of Jesus Christ.

In His Service Together, Roger Schlade
